Dear Barack by Claudia ClarkDear Barack: The Extraordinary Partnership of Barack Obama and Angela Merkel by Claudia Clark

Thanks to the author, Claudia Clark, I am giving away one print copy of ‘Dear Barack: The Extraordinary Partnership of Barack Obama and Angela Merkel’.

Description Dear Barack by Claudia Clark

One of the great political friendships of the modern world, as told through key moments that shaped the twenty-first century

Today, we know US President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel as two of the world’s most influential leaders, together at the center of some of the biggest controversies and most impressive advancements of our time. But while their friendship has been the subject of both scrutiny and admiration, few know the full story.

Taking office at the height of the 2008 global recession, Obama was keenly aware of the fractured relationship between the US and Europe. And for her part, Merkel was suspicious of the charismatic newcomer who had captivated her country.

Faced with the challenges of globalization, the two often clashed over policy, but—as the first Black president and first female chancellor—they shared a belief that democracy could uplift the world. United by this conviction, they would forge a complicated but inspiring partnership.

Dear Barack is a thoroughly researched document of the parallel trajectories that led to Obama and Merkel meeting on the world stage and the trials, both personal and political, that they confronted in office. At times in the leaders’ own words, the book details such events as Merkel’s historic acceptance of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Russia’s annexation of Crimea, and the 2013 NSA spying scandal, demonstrating the highs and lows of this extraordinary alliance.

A story of camaraderie at a global scale, Dear Barack shows that it is possible for political adversaries to establish bonds of respect—and even friendship—in the service of the free world.

Praise Dear Barack by Claudia Clark

“Clark traces the friendship of Obama and Merkel in meticulous detail with charming anecdotes and expertly places their bond within the historical contexts of other world leaders’ relationships…A delightful, well-researched account of two leaders’ unlikely friendship.”—Kirkus Reviews

“Technology has linked the planet, and the need for responsible, committed, and informed leaders has never been greater. Dear Barack reflects upon this urgency as Clark brings to life the correspondences, meetings, and goals shared between two great world leaders.”—Tom Cochran, Obama White House & State Department Technology Advisor

“This book articulately captures the epic friendship, strong partnership, and extraordinary leadership of two of the world’s most remarkable politicians, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and former US President Barack Obama…This book has profound life lessons and is definitely a must-read!”—Kadian Davis-Owusu, Founder, TeachSomebody

“Clark’s book retells a fascinating and necessary chapter of U.S. relations with Germany. Dear Barack is a reminder that the U.S. can always return to the era of Obama and Merkel’s companionship, and that the world would be a better place if it did.”—Shari Temple, Democrats Abroad Germany Voting Representative and 2008 DNC Obama delegate

Bee Gone

An obnoxious drone in a bee hive tries to wrest power from the Queen Bee by scheming with a less-prosperous hive. Donnie Drone  creates chaos  when his underhanded scheme succeeds. Donnie Drone will look familiar. The actions recounted in the parable are recent history. This is a quick, amusing read with wonderful illustrations. All of us should take our responsibility to vote seriously and elections must be fair, not hacked. Go to the polls for ALL elections.

My Thoughts Bee Gone: Political Parable by Connie Corcoran Wilson

A drone bee tries to wreak havoc on the hive and wrestle power from the Queen.  It is apparent just by looking at the cover who the culprit “bee” is, Donnie.

This graphic novel parallels today’s U.S. politics in a humours and entertaining way.  It reminds of the book ‘Whose Boat is This Boat’ by The Staff of the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. It is a quick read and reminds us that we need to take our democracy seriously and put some real thought into who we want as a leader.  There is too much at stake, no matter what our political affiliations and beliefs are! I give it 5 stars for the lough out loud moments, illustrations, and message.

I received the ebook for my honest review.

Trek by Rand Bishop

Description TREK by Rand Bishop

2017, America was turning mean. Heartsick, Rand Bishop couldn’t sit idly by. His action plan, however, had friends and family questioning his sanity. At 67, on bad knees and arthritic feet, with minimal camping experience and zero knowledge of long distance hiking, Rand set out to walk 900-miles, from Southern California to the Central Oregon Coast.

How an aging pilgrim managed to survive a 90-day test of will and endurance is only a fraction of this inspiring tale. The newfound hope Rand gained by listening to and interacting with a thousand people from nearly every walk of life is the true heartbeat of the TREK story.

My Thoughts TREK by Rand Bishop

“Well, I said to myself, I can walk. I can play the guitar. And, I can sing. So, that’s what I’ll do.”

A fascinating account of Oregon singer, Rand Bishop’s walk up the West Coast of the United States and his quest for peace. After the 2016 election, Bishop found himself depressed and besieged by middle-of-the-night worries. He felt that America was backsliding into a culture of what he refers to as “meanness.” Bigotry, racism, homophobia and sexism were reigning supreme once again and the hopelessness that Bishop was experiencing threatened to overtake him. Until, one day, he had an idea.

He decided to walk the entire length of Highway 101 on the West Coast. The route goes for 1,500 miles and winds all the way from Southern California up through Oregon and Washington State. Bishop intended to walk the distance with his guitar and his nine-year-old beagle, Millie.

What started as a foolhardy dream became a pilgrimage, a journey to the center of what truly makes this country great and, for Bishop a long look at his own soul. Despite not being a seasoned writer (he is a song writer), Bishop did great work with the narrative of his journey and the lives of the people that he met along the way. Reading along, I felt almost like I was traveling right next to him, meeting people from all walks of life and hearing their stories.

Bishop’s story was inspiring, compelling, funny and sometimes heartbreaking. I couldn’t agree more with his decision for embarking on the trek in the first place. It’s so nice to read a memoir about peace and loving one another in this day and age and I really appreciated the overall message of the book. Rand Bishop’s book touched my heart in a way that I haven’t experienced in a long time and I know that it will stay with me forever. 5 out of 5 stars.

I received the ebook for my honest review.
