Close Encounters of the Traveling Kind

Description Close Encounters of the Traveling Kind by Amanda Jayne

This collection of near-death (and a few almost-near-death) stories take you on adventures in Africa, South America, Nepal, Japan and Thailand. Close Encounters with an angry snake, the edge of an abyss, an unfriendly African tribe, a fake guide or two, a mean Dutch man, a magic whirlpool, a nasty case of Typhoid and a severe case of mountain stupidity are told with the confidence of a traveler who has discovered that no matter what happens, everything works out in the end.

My Thoughts Close Encounters of the Traveling Kind by Amanda Jayne

When I was a girl I loved to do adventurous things like sliding down snow filled hills and tubing down a river.  As an adult I have done some mountain climbing and parasailing but I have never done anything as adventurous as Amanda Jayne has done!

In ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’ Amanda Jayne has written a series of essays telling of her death defying travel adventures.  Her writing is such that she draws you in and makes you feel like you were on these adventures with her.  My entire body was clenched so tight while reading that I was quite sore.

I love how Jayne outlines the “reasons for near-death” at the beginning of each essay, “retrospective tips on how not to die”, and “lessons learned” at the end of each essay.  The first essay was from when she was an English teacher in Japan.  One drunken night her and her fellow teachers came up with the bright idea to climb Mount Fuji together.  However, when the time came, only Amanda and one other teacher showed up.  It quickly became apparent that they were ill equipped and had little idea of how to climb safely.

Jayne really shows her writing skills in this little book of essays and I hope she keeps writing!  She has a wicked sense of humor and can really capture the beauty and danger of nature as well as those real life characters that can help you risk life and limb.  I plan to keep my adventures small but I would love to read about more travel adventures that Amanda Jayne experiences.  I would also love to see her try her hand as a fiction writer, I really think she has the skill.  I highly recommend ‘Close Encounters of the Traveling Kind’!

About Amanda JayneClose Encounters of the Traveling Kind by Amanda Jayne

Amanda Jayne never wanted to live a normal life, which she has achieved with resounding success so far. She realised books were magic and could take you to other places, times and universes when she was very young and wanted to become an author immediately. However, she waited several decades so she could do other things first.

Her love for travel began with a six month South Africa trip at age 18 and continued with short jaunts in Eastern Europe during the years she worked in the mental health field.

As soon as she realised offices, rules and regulations were not her thing, she left her job and her native England to find out more about the world and the amazing array of people living in it. She spent 10 years living and travelling in various countries and finally returned to the UK in 2009 after gaining a masters in Spiritual Psychology in the USA and walking 1,200 km around the 88 temples pilgrimage in Shikoku, Japan.

These days she teaches Jikiden Reiki, makes websites and writes books. She’s sometimes quite busy. Some of the things she loves are trees, art, being with friends, making up stories for her nephews, karaoke, cats and dark chocolate, not necessarily in that order. She lives in a quiet corner of Kent in the UK and tries, but usually fails, to stay there for long periods of time.

In The Defense of Guilt

Description In Defense of Guilt by Benjamin H. Berkley

Representing a man accused of throwing his wife overboard, chic attorney Lauren Hill begins to artfully present her case. But when Judge Howell seems to morph into God, Lauren’s life of infidelity, poor parenthood, and self-absorption is questioned by the Almighty, who charges Lauren with committing the seven deadly sins. But is this real or fantasy? Is Lauren on the edge of a nervous breakdown, or is God presiding and ultimately deciding Lauren’s fate? In Defense of Guilt is a gripping story of self-discovery, justice, and ultimately about love.

This is a great book for those who love legal thrillers of John Grisham, and Scott Turow.

My Thoughts In Defense of Guilt by Benjamin H. Berkley

First, let me start by saying that I am not a religious person.  So when I see a book published as Christian Fiction, it is a turn off for me.  I have to be convinced that there is literary merit without shoving religious beliefs down my throat. That said, I decided to give ‘In Defense of Guilt’ a chance.

We all know of people with very questionable values.  Many of us judge lawyers to be in that category.  After all, many defend guilty people.  ‘In Defense of Guilt’ examines defense attorney, Lauren Hill.  She prides herself on getting her clients off even if they are guilty.  After all, it is her job to do so.

This is a very unique book that turns the tables from the client to the lawyer.  While Lauren defends her client, she herself is put on trial by God.  She is charges with committing the seven deadly sins.  Is Lauren going crazy?  Lauren is a well examined character and all of her flaws are laid out for the reader to witness.  The reader becomes jury.

‘In Defense of Guilt’ is a well written legal thriller that really has two trials, the one of the defendant accused of murdering his wife and that of Lauren Hill.  It’s like getting two books in one and it works quite well. Benjamin H. Berkley is a genius for not only thinking it up but for also pulling it off so well!  I highly recommend ‘In Defense of Guilt’ to those who enjoy crime thrillers.

About Benjamin BerkleyIn Defense of Guilt by Benjamin H. Berkley

From as far back as he can remember, Benjamin Berkley has been fascinated by the law. Growing up in Long Beach, New York, his daily schedule revolved around grainy black-and-white reruns of Perry Mason who, with the help of Della Street, solved the most complicated crimes imaginable. It was therefore no surprise to his family and friends that Berkley chose law as his career path, now practicing for over forty years.

The Lost Mata Hari Ring

The sequel to The Christmas Eve Letter!

When husband and wife, Eve and Patrick Gantly, discover a shocking secret from Patrick’s past, they make the difficult decision to use the old lantern once again to return to 1885. They hope to save his child from a tragic future.

Although they try to plan for every possible contingency, something goes wrong.  They lose each other and end up in a different time!  Nothing goes as planned.  They struggle to save Patrick’s daughter from certain death, even as they search for the lost lantern that will return them to their own time.

My Thoughts Christmas Eve Letter: Time Travel Novel by Elyse Douglas

Another delightful read from husband and wife author team, Elyse Douglas!  As always, the characters jump off the page and pull you in.  Poor Eve, she had so much trouble finding her husband, Patrick.  They each landed in a different place while time traveling.  I loved the dynamic between Eve and Irene Casterbury in 1914.  Irene is such a spitfire for that time period.  Real women from history like her helped pave the way for today’s women!  We owe them many thanks!

I liked the idea of the lantern as the portal for time travel and how imperfect it was.  The writing is so fresh and pulls the reader in after just a few pages.  Elyse Douglas captures the sense of time and places in a way that make you feel as if you were there.  I think fans of ‘The Time Traveler’s Wife’ by Audrey Niffenegger would love ‘The Christmas Eve Daughter’!

Do you want to know if Patrick and Eve found each other again and if they were able to save Patrick’s daughter, born in 1885?  Since I don’t give spoilers, you will have to read the book.  I highly recommend it!  It is book two of ‘The Christmas Letter’ series but can be easily read on its own.  I enjoyed it so much that I do plan to read the first book.
