Description Patriot Oath by Lloyd Lofthouse

AND HE THOUGHT BEING IN THE MARINES WAS TOUGH …

After twenty-four years, Special Forces legend Josh Kavanagh has retired from the military. But now that he’s home, he’s finding that everyone has a different understanding of his motivations, and realizes that there are some wounds no amount of time can heal.

Josh’s traumatized sister, Suki, thinks her big brother is a hero and has come home to punish her rapist, the youngest son of a ruthless, crooked billionaire who lives to get revenge on anyone he sees as a threat to his family, wealth, and power.

Josh’s childhood sweetheart, Rachel, hopes he’s returning for her—the fierce girl he left behind when he joined the military. But Rachel doesn’t know about Mia, the woman in France …

And Josh isn’t coming home alone. The Oath Group, an elite force of private military contractors, is already in Montana waiting for their commander to arrive.

The DOD and CIA don’t want President Trump to know they hired Josh’s Oath Group to examine dangerous white supremacist militias that are threatening the U.S. Constitution. That covert black-ops military operation is starting in Idaho and Montana. Josh and his teams have to get the job done while preserving their anonymity—and their lives.

NOTE: this novel grew out of a prompt in a VA Vet Center PTSD support group that focuses on writing as a form of therapy. Everyone in that group was a combat veteran that included Marines, Special Forces, medics, combat photographers, et al.  The combat vets in that group heard the entire novel as it was written chapter-by-chapter, starting in March 2018.

Review Patriot Oath by Lloyd Lofthouse

Guest Review by Mark S.

‘The Patriot Oath,’ by Lloyd Lofthouse is equal parts action packed and poignant with a little bit of romance mixed in.

Career Marine Josh Kavanagh left home to join the service 24 years earlier. At the start of the book, he returns to his family’s farm in Montana with the intention of helping his sister through the aftermath of her rape.

Josh’s sister, Suki was attacked by a local rich kid, who used his father’s money to evade punishment by the court, and Josh intends to give the young man his comeuppance in the way only a decorated Marine can. However, before he can solve this problem, Josh must deal with the hurt and pain that he caused by leaving his family and his teenage girlfriend, Rachel.

Josh soon discovers that the town that he left almost a quarter century earlier has changed in a lot of big ways, and that he may not be able to right the wrongs that he caused all those years ago. On top of all this, a group of private military contractors called ‘The Oath Group’ has traveled with Josh and is waiting for him to command them.

There is something for every reader in this roller coaster ride of a novel. Whether you are a fan of military stories, special ops stories, romance (without a happily ever after), or family drama, ‘The Patriot Oath,’ has it all!

Lofthouse writes all of the characters in this novel as fascinating and relatable, even as they (and especially Josh) are doing some pretty incredible things. Readers could learn a lot from this novel, not just about military operations but about writing in general.

This is a familiar story with a fresh, new take and one that will be enjoyed by fiction readers from all walks of life. Pick this one up, you won’t regret it! It deserves all 5 stars!

I received the Kindle version for my honest opinion.

The Waters Fine

Description Water’s Fine: Suspense Novel by Janice Coy

Catalina Rodrigues believes she’s living her best life, traveling to exotic locations around the world as a scuba dive master, spending every moment possible in her beloved ocean.

Bertie Clark is excited for a week-long scuba trip with her husband exploring the underwater wonders of an ocean teeming with life – the Sea of Cortez.

But a tragedy on their dive boat sends both women into uncharted territory, questioning what they’ve always thought to be true, and fostering an unlikely friendship. Will either trust the invitation to “come on in, the water’s fine” again?

My Thoughts Water’s Fine: Suspense Novel by Janice Coy

There is a reason I rarely read suspense novels, like those by Mary Higgins Clark.  I read two of her books as a teen in the 70’s and they both seemed like they were the same book but with different characters.  However, when I read the description or ‘The Water’s Fine’ and saw the scuba diving angle, I was intrigued. I am so glad I decided to give it a try!

Catalina is a scuba diving dive master working on a boat with customers on a scuba diving trip.  She has worked on various boats for 6 years and is very experienced.  For this week-long trip she is assigned a group of other very seasoned divers, some of whom are dive masters themselves.  She is happy to get a break from working with less experienced divers.

Bertie is a woman in the group who is there with her husband Max.  She has a zest for living and people can’t help but like her right away.  She and Catalina hit it off right away.  The trip is going well and the group has seen some amazing things on their dives.  However, on the last dive something goes terribly wrong.  Is Catalina to blame?

I love the relationship that Bertie build up long distance after the trip.  They are both strong, resilient women but question that strength and resilience.  Janice Coy is an excellent writer.  She grabbed my attention from page one!  I love the descriptions of the dives on the trip and felt like I was there.  The characters are fresh but realistic.  There was one small thing that I thought was a bit unrealistic in the plot which I can’t go into without giving away a spoiler.  However, it did not ruin the book for me at all.  ‘The Water’s Fine kept me up into the wee hours of the morning because I could not put it down.  I highly recommend it and want to thank Ms. Coy for breathing fresh life into the genre!  I can’t wait to read her next book!

4.5/5

Praise Water’s Fine: Suspense Novel by Janice Coy

“I just finished The Water’s Fine by Janice Coy which means I am must bid farewell to the characters I have become attached to and I must close the cover on a plot that kept a firm grasp on my attention and continued to surprise. The act of reading this book can cause laundry to pile up, dust to gather and dirty dishes to dry crusty because one cannot stop reading from chapter to chapter – – from scuba action, to mystery, heartache, friendship, suspense and self discovery.
The author is artfully descriptive in all areas of scene and character development which draws you in and holds you! In fact, I would like to invite you to do a little scuba diving and not get wet? Slip on those fins, adjust your mask, get your regulator set and start reading The Water’s Fine.”- Kjans, Amazon

“Oh wow, what a well written book! Being someone who thinks that scuba diving is too scary to try I was drawn in by the author’s imagery. It captured all the anxiety of “breathing underwater”, the suspense of what dangerous creatures you could encounter as well as the absolute beauty and serenity you could feel while exploring the deep blue sea. I fell in love with her characters and was sucked into the mystery and suspense and enjoyed joining them on their journeys of self discovery, life and loss. I really enjoyed this book.”-Amazon Customer

Praise Smallest of Waves by Janice Coy

“Thanks to Coy’s descriptive, immersive world, the waves of Agave Beach leave a distinct impact in The Smallest of Waves. – Indie Reader

“A seaside mystery with an appealing heroine…Coy uses her beachside setting well, contrasting Agave Beach’s innocent sand castles and clueless tourists with the mysterious ocean – so foreign with its dark depths, sharks, kelp forests, and sea caves.” Kirkus Reviews

Interview Water’s Fine: Suspense Novel by Janice Coy

TR: Please tell us something about “The Water’s Fine” that is not in the summary.

JC: I was thinking a lot about air when I wrote this novel: the air the scuba divers breathe underwater; the air used in the balloon designs; and the air in one of the last dramatic scenes of the novel. Usually people don’t think about the normal, but necessary act of breathing. But scuba divers are very aware of that tank of air they carry on their backs underwater. It’s what keeps them alive. I attended the World Balloon Convention while I was researching this novel, and I was struck by the elaborate, but very temporary balloon designs made out of latex filled with air. The creativity was astounding. Even more amazing was the realization that every single design would be popped, deflated and discarded by the end of the night.

TR: Where do you derive the names of your characters?

JC: Character names are very important to me and are always an integral part of the novel I’m writing. I can have the entire story plotted, but until I know the name of my main character (s), I cannot get started! I typically do not use names of people I know because I already have feelings (good or bad) associated with those names. When I’ve determined a character’s age and cultural background, I will research names that were popular during that time period.  Still, I will only choose a name that resonates with me. Names say so much about a character and by extension their parents.

TR: When did your fascination with the sea start?

JC: I’ve always been amazed by the power and majesty of the ocean. It covers about seventy percent of the earth, yet many know so little about what’s beneath its surface. I had sailed, kayaked and boogie boarded on the ocean, but I was always a little bit afraid. When I took up scuba diving, and I could see what lived beneath the waves, I was no longer scared. I’ve been fortunate to view many brilliantly colored and unique sea creatures, and to “fly” along the underwater currents of the Sea of Cortez like the characters in “The Water’s Fine.”

TR: Tell us about your cover.

JC: When I’m scuba diving, I love looking back up to the surface from down below. One of my favorite times to do that is when the sun is setting. At twilight, the water turns golden where the last rays of the sun are touching, but down below, the water is already growing shadowed. The bubbles on the cover are those of a scuba diver looking up to the water’s surface; they are the expended air the diver has breathed. The open bubble is close to the surface. The cover was created by a professional graphic designer.

TR: When did you first have a desire to write? How did this desire manifest itself?

JC: I’ve always wanted to be a writer. In college, I majored in English and dreamed of someday writing a novel. After graduation, I worked as a journalist for a daily newspaper, and then later, as a freelance feature writer. Finally, I sat down to work on my first novel only to discover it was a lot more challenging than I had imagined! I took creative writing courses, participated in workshops, writing conventions, and in a critique group, and then, after four years, I completed a novel. It’s hard to believe that I’ve now written five!

TR: What are you currently working on?

JC: I’m in the very rough draft stages of my sixth novel. This is always the most challenging part for me as I do not outline. I have the completed story in my head. I know where I want to start, and I know where I want to end. The challenge and the adventure are how my characters will get where I want them to go.

TR: Is there a question that you would have liked me or another blogger to ask but didn’t?

JC: I started writing “The Water’s Fine” with the idea of having Catalina Rodrigues be the single main character who narrated the story. But when Bertie Clark came along, she wiggled her way into my affections and demanded her own chapters. I happily complied. So yes, it’s true, my characters usually have a mind of their own and often tell me what to write. I have fun with them, and enjoy putting them in situations or settings that surprise and challenge them.
