Rainbow In Her Pocket

Description Rainbow In Her Pocket by Amanda Jayne

Have you ever seen a sheep standing tiptoe on the ears
of a very tall giraffe while a crowd looks on and cheers?
And have you seen an owl helping them to tug
a rainbow from the sky, like a multi-colored rug?

This is the story of Mala the rhino who can’t help feeling blue after her friend moves away. Her friends, an owl, a sheep and a not-so-humble giraffe get together with sun and create a crazumptious plan to show Mala that blue is as beautiful as all the other colors. This colorful story of friendship, love and loss will delight children while encouraging them to embrace their emotions in a healthy way.

My Thoughts Rainbow In Her Pocket by Amanda Jayne

Narrated by a giraffe named Arnie, ‘A Rainbow In Her Pocket’ is about a rhino named Mala.  Her good friend, the gorilla went to the zoo.  She missed him so much she became depressed (blue).  She tried everything she could to get rid of the blue but just couldn’t shake it.  Her good friends, including Arnie got together to figure out how to help her. They even consulted with a yew tree and the sun.  The sun had the best idea of all.

I can’t tell you anymore as I don’t want to risk spoilers.  This picture book is brightly illustrated and beautifully written by Amanda Jayne.  It teaches children that all feelings are good, even sadness.  I love the way she does it through color to help children really learn the concept.

I don’t know how she could better address the gorilla going to the zoo however; gorillas don’t just walk out of the forest and go to a zoo willingly, as depicted in the book.  They are kidnapped and taken from their family.  I believe children should know that truth.  The practice of kidnapping animals and putting them in zoos for human’s entertainment and even in the name of science is cruel.

Despite that one scene in the book, I highly recommend it.  I think it does a great job of teaching that all feeling are normal, even sadness.  Perhaps parents can use the gorilla going to the zoo as a discussion with their child.  There is certainly a lot to discuss about colors and feelings. I give ‘A Rainbow In Her Pocket’ 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Night Shift by Debi GlioriNight Shift by Debi Gliori

Thanks to Tanya Farrell of  Wunderkind PR, I am giving away one print copy of Night Shift by Debi Gliori.

Description Night Shift by Debi Gliori

A groundbreaking picture book on depression with stunning illustrations.

With stunning black and white illustration and deceptively simple text, author and illustrator Debi Gliori examines how depression affects one’s whole outlook upon life, and shows that there can be an escape – it may not be easy to find, but it is there. Drawn from Debi’s own experiences and with a moving testimony at the end of the book explaining how depression has affected her and how she continues to cope, Debi hopes that by sharing her own experience she can help others who suffer from depression, and to find that subtle shift that will show the way out.

‘I have used dragons to represent depression. This is partly because of their legendary ability to turn a once fertile realm into a blackened, smoking ruin and partly because popular mythology shows them as monstrous opponents with a tendency to pick fights with smaller creatures. I’m not particularly brave or resourceful, and after so many years battling my beasts, I have to admit to a certain weariness, but I will arm-wrestle dragons for eternity if it means that I can help anyone going through a similar struggle.’

Praise for Night Shift by Debi Gliori

“Debi Gliori is amazing. Her pictures offer people an insight into depression that words often struggle to reach. She makes visible the invisible. And I for one want to thank her for that.”- Matt Haig, bestselling author of Reasons to Stay Alive
