Description of Justice at Dachau by Joshua M. Greene

2017 marks the 70th anniversary of the Dachau trials, the single largest yet least-known series of war crimes trials in history. Bestselling  and award winning biographer Joshua M. Greene (Witness: Voices from the Holocaust, Here Comes the Sun, Swami in a Strange Land) has written the definitive account of the trials as seen through the eyes of the chief prosecutor. Col. Bill Denson, a humble lawyer from Alabama, had no experience of war, yet he succeeded in winning due process verdicts against the operators of Hitler’s concentration camps–and nearly lost his life in the process.

In a makeshift courtroom set up inside Hitler’s first concentration camp, Denson was charged with building a team from lawyers who had no background in war crimes and determining charges for crimes that courts had never before confirmed. Among the accused were Dr. Klaus Schilling, responsible for hundreds of deaths in his “research” for a cure for malaria; Edwin Katzen-Ellenbogen, a Harvard psychologist turned Gestapo informant; and one of history’s most notorious female war criminals, Ilse Koch, “Bitch of Buchenwald,” whose penchant for tattooed skins and human bone lamps made headlines worldwide.

Denson, just 32 years old, with one criminal trial to his name, led a brilliant and successful prosecution, but nearly two years of exposure to such horrors took its toll. His wife divorced him, his weight dropped to 116 pounds, and he collapsed from exhaustion. Worst of all was the pressure from his army superiors to bring the trials to a rapid end when their agenda shifted away from punishing Nazis to winning the Germans’ support in the emerging Cold War. Denson persevered, determined to create a careful record of responsibility for the crimes of the Holocaust. When, in a final shocking twist, the United States used clandestine reversals and commutation of sentences to set free those found guilty at Dachau, Denson risked his army career to try to prevent justice from being undone.

Originally published in hardcover by Random House in 2001, this is the first time Justice at Dachau is available in paperback.

Polaroid: The Magic Material by Florian KapsPolaroid: The Magic Material by Florian Kaps

Florian ‘Doc’ Kaps was fascinated the magic of Polaroid.  Before digital photography the only way to get a instant printed photo was from an instant camera.  It was actually developed in 1940 but I remember my family first got one in the late 60’s.  I still have some of the photos from that camera but they are quite faded.

In ‘Polaroid’ talks about how the camera and technology was developed and the models that were out in the marketplace.  He also talks about how he revived film production in 2008 with The Impossible Project.  Demand is growing for instant photography again today.

Packed with lots of instant photos, Polaroid: The Magic Material would make a excellent coffee table book and a great gift for any photography lover!  In fact, I just got a copy for someone in our family for Christmas.  I can’t say whom, in case they are reading this review. LOL! This is a really fun book!

I received a beautiful hardbound copy for my honest opinion.

War Torn

With some 200 million people in more than forty countries affected by armed conflict or genocide, refugees are appearing in record numbers. War Torn is timely in how it brings us intimately into the lives of civilians who have survived wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia, Guatemala, and Sri Lanka.

Alongside stories that convey intimately the destruction and heartbreak of armed conflict, Miller captures the courage and resilience he calls “a remarkable kind of light,” an essential counterpoint to the grief and trauma that war creates. The stories in War Torn are powerful, heart-wrenching, and unforgettable.

My Thoughts War Torn by Kenneth E. Miller

When someone hears the term PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), most think of soldiers who were on the battle field. However, it also affects victims of war, violence, rape etc (any trauma).  Kenneth Miller examines all of these issues in ‘War Torn’.

Ken traveled to Guatemala to help evaluate a mental health intervention designed for indigenous children. He didn’t really find much there so there wasn’t a lot to actually evaluate.  He covers the history of war, genocide, and poverty of indigenous people. He found it hard to set up mental health programs for various reasons. He also traveled to Mexico and other countries with violet histories as well.

So, you are probably thinking that ‘War Torn’ is a depressing book with little hope.  That is not the case.  Yes, some of it is depressing.  How can it not be, reading about people’s situations with war, violence, loss, etc? You would have to be heartless.  However, also buried between the covers are pearls of hope, wisdom, humor, and resilience.

‘War Torn’ should be required reading for high school.  I know some parents want to shelter their teenagers from these realities but I think it is important to educate them on this issue.  They are the future and will have to continue to deal with and hopefully learn how to prevent the devastation so many people have had to endure.

‘War Torn’ is hard to put down and riveting, it read very fast. Kenneth Miller tells of his discoveries in a way that is not preachy.  His writing style is excellent and he really draws you in.  Highly recommended!

I received the ebook version for my honest review.
