ROSARIO

I am Rosario Dominguez Gonzalez, heiress to one of the largest and oldest fortunes in Spain. My family is considered in both the most elite economic and social circles as one of the richest and most influential in Europe…

BALOU

That was until the day when I sensed that someone was watching me; I opened one of my eyes and was just about to close it again when something caught my attention…

Rosario and Balou need each other for very different reasons… But for one of them, it is a matter of life and death.

Balou is taken away from his mother at a very tender age and sold to a pet shop where he waits impatiently for someone to claim him and take home a black and as he considers himself, an attractive British Shorthair cat. Just when he thinks this is going to be impossible and his bags are almost packed to go to the local animal shelter, he meets young and troubled Rosario who is really not looking for a pet.

It doesn´t take him very long to realize that something is horribly wrong in her household and he takes it upon himself to protect the human he has come to love almost as much as he loves his food, his siestas and of course the time he spends outside chasing everything and anything that moves.

A Strange and endearing alliance is forged between them but he soon discovers that something is horribly wrong in Rosario’s household. ‘I Stand Corrected’ is Patricia Asedegbega’s first novel in English.

My Thoughts:

‘I Stand Corrected’ opens with Javier taking his wife, Rosario, shopping to pick out her own gift.  She really doesn’t want one but finally goes into a pet shop to take a look.  Javier sees a dog that he likes and encourage her to adopt it but when she saw a black cat, she knew she wanted him and named him Balou.

Balou and Rosario are the narrators through the book.  Balou tells us how he ended up at a pet shop and how he fell in love with Rosario.  He found out pretty early on that Rosario needed someone to protect her and he even missed some very important siestas to do so.

With a cat narrating the book, some may assume it is a light read but you would be mistaken. Yes, there is humor in it but the dark subject of spousal abuse is at its core. Having been at the receiving end with my first husband, I can attest that Asedegbega does an excellent job writing about this touchy, important subject.  She does it in such a way that the reader is entertained yet horrified at the same time.

This is a difficult book for me, it brings me back to my first marriage that lasted only one year.  I was lucky that things happen that year that gave me the strength to get out early.  Plus I had the support of my parents and siblings.  I have noticed some reviewers wonder why Rosario didn’t leave at the first signs of abuse.  However, I remember feeling like ‘a deer in headlights” at the time it was happening to me.  My self esteem back then was not strong and he made threats about if I ever left and I believed him. I even felt sorry for him.  He was a master manipulator, much like Javier in the book.  He did not carry out those threats.

I have grown from that experience and found my self-confidence with work.  I can’t imagine getting myself into that situation again.  I actually loved my single life, once I gain the confidence.  However, several years later, I met Bill and after a year, agreed to marry him.  I have not regretted it!  I hit the husband jackpot with Bill and he spoils me, when I allow it. In June, we celebrated our 18 year wedding anniversary and are still best friends.

I know I digress from my review, however, I thought it was important to share my personal experience.  This book is the first book in a series and I hope for Rosario and all abused women, that their gain their voice and strength to leave like I did.  Even if you don’t have friends or family who can help you, there is a way out.  You just have to take that leap of faith.  There are agencies that will help you find a safe place to live if you are worried he may go looking for you.  I hide myself for a time.

If you are in an abusive relationship, you can do a internet search using “domestic abuse services” to find an agency in your area, that can help.  You can do it at your workplace or go to a library so your spouse won’t find your search.

I loved “I Stand Corrected’ however, I don’t know if I will read the sequel, only because it brought back my past life, much like post traumatic stress.  I read it in two days and I got very little sleep.  I just couldn’t turn off those tapes of my past life in my head.  That said, I highly recommend it!

This is Patricia Asedegbega’s first book written in English but she has other books written in Spanish.  I hope that she will release her Spanish books translated in English!

Praise for ‘The Tragedy of Fidel Castro’:

“Novels like The Tragedy of Fidel Castro are the untamed mustangs of fiction that, unlike most other books, run wild and free, contemptuous of the confinement that the corral of ordinary classification would imprison them in”-The American Culture
””The Tragedy of Fidel Castro” is very much recommended reading for those who like religious and alternative history reads, not to be missed”-
Midwest Book Review

”This book is worth a read and I recommend it”-Wilderness House Literary Review

“João Cerqueira’s novel is an energetic, bizarre, and extremely clever take on two heavily fictionalized leaders”-Bullet Reviews

The Tragedy of Fidel Castro is a phantasmagoric odyssey through a highly imaginative prose universe of discovery and inquest. It’s a magic realism hybrid of sacrificial lambs and Revolution, capitalistic decadence, and celestial consequence. I expect that this rich and unique narrative voice will illuminate a phosphorescent trajectory in the future annals of the New Millennial World Lit!”-Mark Spitzer – Toad Suck Review Editor, Professor of Writing at the University of Central Arkansas

“The author brilliantly balances the formal tone and themes of capitalism, socialism and religion with an appropriate dose of the ridiculous. […] The feeling I got with each page was one that I compare to the first time I read The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan. I might not get it completely at first but it all ties together by the end and there’s a feeling of having expanded my world view a bit on every page. […] If you’re a fan of satire, history, or generally good literature, I highly recommend this novel”-Rabid Readers Review

”Cerqueira shows potential to be a big name in the future”-Contemporary Literary Review India

Bob CoverBook Description:

Publisher: Tirgearr Publishing (September 5, 2014)
Category: Soft Science Fiction
Tour Date: October, 2014
Available in: ebook, Approx. 165 Pages

After 27 years as a newspaper man, Peter Anderson’s career is slipping away… at least it was… until he stumbled upon the story of a lifetime.

Sent to do a fluff piece about lights in the night sky over Arizona, he discovers far more than he ever expected when he comes upon a mysterious young woman held prisoner in a basement.   After helping her to escape she disappears before he can learn the truth about who she is or where she came from.

His search for her leads him back to the lights in the sky and leaves him with more questions than answers.   The only thing he knows for certain… the only thing he can count on are the two words offered repeatedly by his friend and guide…. “IS BELT.”

My Thoughts:

Peter Anderson is a reporter  in a pretty desolate town, staying in a rundown hotel in Arizona.  He asks for a driver to take him around and that is when Bob shows up in a rundown car.  Peter doesn’t hold out much hope in making it to his appointment but he makes it.

Thus begins his journey with Bob.  The story he is covering takes on way more than he bargains for and there are many “roadblocks” along the way, including people who will stop at nothing to silence Peter. Peter soon finds out how good it is to have Bob with him.

‘Bob’ is a delightful book and a delightful character.  The book is soft science fiction and can be enjoyed by readers of thrillers, action/adventure, and humor.  Be sure to buckle in for this faced paced read, or as Bob would say, “Is Belt”!

Highly recommended!

About Tegon Maus:tegon maus2

I was raised pretty much the same as everyone else… devoted mother, strict father and all the imaginary friends I could conjure. Not that I wasn’t friendly, I just wasn’t “people orientated”. Maybe I lived in my head way more than I should have, maybe not. I liked machines more than people, at least I did until I met my wife.

The first thing I can remember writing was for her. For the life of me I can’t remember what it was about… something about dust bunnies under the bed and monsters in my closet. It must have been pretty good because she married me shortly after that. I spent a good number of years after inventing games and prototypes for a variety of ideas before I got back to writing.

It wasn’t a deliberate conscious thought, it was more of a stepping stone. My wife and I had joined a dream interpret group and we were encouraged to write down our dreams as they occurred. “Be as detailed as you can,” we were told.

I was thrilled. If there is one thing I enjoy it’s making people believe me and I like to exaggerate. Not a big exaggeration or an outright lie mind you, just a little step out of sync, just enough so you couldn’t be sure if it were true or not.  When I write, I always write with the effort of “it could happen” very much in mind and nothing, I guarantee you, nothing, makes me happier.

I have consistently placed in the top 3 in 189 writing contest in a variety of genres and I have been featured in magazines a couple of times to raise money for Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
