Gloria: A Life by Emily MannGloria: A Life by Emily Mann

Thanks to Corinna Schulenburg of Theatre Communications Group,  I am giving away one print copy of ‘Gloria: A Life by Emily Mann. Please note this is a play but quite accessible for those who usually don’t read plays.

Description Gloria: A Life by Emily Mann

Gloria: A Life is a unique, deeply moving performance created in the hopeful, conversational spirit of its extraordinary subject.” –Sara Holdren, New York Magazine’s Vulture

“One part theater, one part consciousness-raising group therapy session, Gloria: A Life offers an experience that promises to be a more intimate recollection of Steinem’s journey, not only because it’s been singularly shaped by the hands of women.” –Noor Brara, Vogue

Five decades after Gloria Steinem began raising her voice for equality and championing the voices of others, she remains a leader of the American feminist movement. Emily Mann’s new play traces the progress of Steinem’s extraordinary life, from her undercover Playboy Bunny expos in the 1960s, through her founding of Ms. Magazine in the 1970s, to her activism in today’s women’s movement.

My Thoughts Gloria: A Life by Emily Mann

Bill and I saw the theater production of ‘Gloria: A Life’ back in March on television, right after the shelter in place order.  We loved it.  Then, this summer I r3eceived an email asking me if I wanted a review copy of the book.  I jumped at the chance to revisit the book!  I wanted to be able to revisit it at  some point qanyway.

Okay, I can hear what you may be thinking, “I don’t read plays.” I do understand, some plays are better just to see and not read however, this is a easy to read play, at least for me and I usually do not read plays!

Of course, it is about my hero, Gloria Steinem.  If you do not know who she it, you need to find out!  I don’t know if they are teaching about her and others in the ERA (Equal Rights Amendment)/ Women’s rights, but they should be!

It covers how she came to get involved in the movement and how she and others got it moving.  What women?  Women like Bella Abzug, Shirley Chisholm, Dorothy Pitman , etc.  If you don’t know who they are, you should.

Gloria and these other women are a big reason why women are better able to have careers in fields threat were not open to us.  Back in the 70’s, women were still expected to marry, keep house, and raise children.  I knew at a young age, I wanted to be a career woman and not be tied down to running a household.

I firmly believe, actually demand that women have the same rights as men.  If you are a women that wants to be a home maker, that should be your choice but not expected of you!

This book/play is not only a biography on Gloria Steinem and the feminist movement but it is entertaining as well.  There are places I laughed out loud and got teary eyed.  I highly recommend ti for all sexes. Gloria asks that we all “do one outrageous thing in the cause for social justice.”  What will your thing be?

I give it 5/5.

I received the ebook for my honest opinion.

Description Keeping the Lights On for Ike by Rebecca Daniels

Daily Life of a Utilities Engineer at AFHQ in Europe During WWII; or, What to Say in Letters Home When You’re Not Allowed to Write about the War

Most people don’t realize that during the war in Europe in the 1940s, it took an average of six support soldiers to make the work of four combat soldiers possible. Most of what’s available in the literature tends toward combat narratives, and yet the support soldiers had complex and unique experiences as well. This book is based on personal correspondence, and it is primarily a memoir that creates a picture of the day-to-day realities of an individual soldier told in his own words [as much as he could tell under the wartime rules of censorship, that is] as well as giving insight into what it was actually like to be an American soldier during WWII.

It explores the experiences of a non-combat Army utilities engineer working in a combat zone during the war in Europe and takes the protagonist from basic training through various overseas assignments—in this case to England, North Africa, and Italy as a support soldier under Eisenhower and his successors at Allied Force Headquarters. It also includes some reflections about his life after returning to Oregon when the war was over.

The soldier involved is Captain Harold Alec Daniels [OSU, Class of 1939, ROTC] and most of the letters were written to his wife, Mary Daniels [attended U of O in the late 1930s]. They are the author’s parents, and she inherited the letter collection, photos, and all other primary source materials after her mother’s death in 2006.

My Thoughts Keeping the Lights On for Ike by Rebecca Daniels

“I married a hero,” one of Mary Daniels letters begins, and another states: “According to Life [Magazine], the engineers are the ELITE of the army. I’d rather he’d be in the finance corps.”

Such letters being sent to a young wife’s family members in 1941 were probably not all that uncommon. After all, World War II was raging, Japan had just recently bombed Pearl Harbor and countless men had been drafted to fight on the front lines. Many a wife was left at home, missing her husband and praying for his safety. But the situation with Mary’s husband was just a little bit different.
You see, Alec Daniels was not fighting in the trenches but he was battling against the Nazis in a slightly different capacity.

Alec was a support officer, a soldier who was in charge of maintaining the infrastructure, administration and logistical aspects of the war effort. As an electrical engineer, Alec’s job was, as the title suggests literally “keeping the lights on.” As the memoir says, these support troops were an enormous part of the war that is often overlooked and not talked about.

Because of the delicate nature of Alec’s work, he could only relay so much in his letters home, so he focused more on his thoughts and feelings about his work than any specific details. Many of the letters between Mary and Alec are used in the memoir and they add such a lovely element of realness that really makes the book sing.
Reading their thoughts from that time in their own words, along with the beautiful black and white pictures used throughout the memoir made this book a home run for me. A timeless story about love and war, ‘Keeping the Lights on for Ike’ is one to be read and read again. 5 stars!

I received the ebook for my honest opinion.

Growing Up in Disneyland by Ron DeforeGrowing Up in Disneyland by Ron Defore

Thanks to Waldorf Publishing, I am giving away one print copy of ‘Growing Up in Disneyland’ by Ron Defore.

Description Growing Up in Disneyland by Ron Defore

‘Growing up in Disneyland’ is part biography about Ron’s father, actor Don DeFore, and his own autobiography. Don DeFore earned a star on Hollywood Boulevard and was a household name in the 1950’s and ‘60’s. He co-starred in numerous feature films with many Hollywood legends, TV shows, and on live theater and is best known for “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet” in which he played the next-door-neighbor, “Thorny,” and his co-starring role as “Mr. B” in the 1960’s TV series, “Hazel.” ‘The book includes much of Don’s unpublished autobiography, “Hollywood – DeFore ‘n After.”

“Growing up in Disneyland” is a metaphor for Ron DeFore’s life growing up in a celebrity family filled with “Fantasyland” adventures he equates to a “Forest Gump” type life, from meeting the Beatles, Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin, and other celebrities as Associate Director of the Steve Allen Show. His nearly 20 careers include a mid-life crisis as the “Flying DJ” at an L.A. discotheque to political positions within the Reagan Presidential Administration to establishing his own company.

“Growing up in Disneyland” is also to be taken literally, as Ron spent much of his youth in Disneyland where his father owned Don DeFore’s Silver Banjo Barbecue restaurant in Frontierland. Ron and his brother, Dave, have given presentations to various Disneyland interest groups after which many attendees suggested, “you should write a book.”

“Growing up in Disneyland” will be enjoyed by any age group from baby-boomers that remember Don DeFore’s many beloved acting roles to those that don’t but are curious how life was in “the good-old-days,” especially growing up in a Hollywood celebrity family.  Ron has had so many careers and adventures along the way that readers will have much to keep them from putting the book down.
