My Thoughts Gloria: A Life by Emily Mann
Bill and I saw the theater production of ‘Gloria: A Life’ back in March on television, right after the shelter in place order. We loved it. Then, this summer I r3eceived an email asking me if I wanted a review copy of the book. I jumped at the chance to revisit the book! I wanted to be able to revisit it at some point qanyway.
Okay, I can hear what you may be thinking, “I don’t read plays.” I do understand, some plays are better just to see and not read however, this is a easy to read play, at least for me and I usually do not read plays!
Of course, it is about my hero, Gloria Steinem. If you do not know who she it, you need to find out! I don’t know if they are teaching about her and others in the ERA (Equal Rights Amendment)/ Women’s rights, but they should be!
It covers how she came to get involved in the movement and how she and others got it moving. What women? Women like Bella Abzug, Shirley Chisholm, Dorothy Pitman , etc. If you don’t know who they are, you should.
Gloria and these other women are a big reason why women are better able to have careers in fields threat were not open to us. Back in the 70’s, women were still expected to marry, keep house, and raise children. I knew at a young age, I wanted to be a career woman and not be tied down to running a household.
I firmly believe, actually demand that women have the same rights as men. If you are a women that wants to be a home maker, that should be your choice but not expected of you!
This book/play is not only a biography on Gloria Steinem and the feminist movement but it is entertaining as well. There are places I laughed out loud and got teary eyed. I highly recommend ti for all sexes. Gloria asks that we all “do one outrageous thing in the cause for social justice.” What will your thing be?

Emily Mann is a playwright and director. Her plays include Execution of Justice, Still Life and Having Our Say, among others. She is currently Artistic Director of Princeton, New Jersey’s McCarter Theatre—recipient of the 1994 Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre. Her numerous awards for artistic excellence include a Guggenheim, a Playwrights Fellowship and Artistic Associate Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, a McKnight Fellowship and a Rosamund Gilder Award for Outstanding Creative Achievement in the Theatre.
She is the outgoing Artistic Director of Princeton, New Jersey’s McCarter Theatre. In recognition of her achievements illuminating the possibilities for social, cultural and political change, Ms. Mann was awarded the Lee Reynolds Award from the League of Professional Theatre Women/NY.
