Description Love Can Be: A Literary Collection About Our Animals

Love can be, and sure enough is, moving in all things, in all places, in all forms of life at the same snap of your finger.”—Woody Guthrie

Oklahoma native Woody Guthrie said it first and best. This new anthology of poems and prose, Love Can Be: A Literary Collection About Our Animals, is proof of what love can be, as thirty acclaimed authors join together to champion life in all its forms. This is their gift to the world, not just the artistry of their words, but their vision of an extended community that includes cats, birds, frogs, butterflies, bears, dogs, raccoons, horses—a full-out menagerie of being that enriches us all.

This broad-hearted vision comes with responsibility, and that responsibility speaks to the mission of the Kirkpatrick Foundation, publisher of the book. The Kirkpatrick Foundation will donate all net proceeds of sales of this volume to animal charities in Oklahoma as well as honoraria donated to the contributors’ selected animal charities.

Authors featured in the collection are Julia Alvarez, Blake Bailey, Rick Bass, P. C. Cast, Wayne Coyne, Kim Doner, Delia Ephron, Reyna Grande, Joy Harjo, Amy Hempel, Juan Felipe Herrera, S. E. Hinton, Brandon Hobson, Dean Koontz, Ursula K. Le Guin, Jill McCorkle, Teresa Miller, N. Scott Momaday, Joyce Carol Oates, Susan Orlean, Ron Padgett, Elise Paschen, Diane Rehm, Jewell Parker Rhodes, Wade Rouse, Alexander McCall Smith, Lalita Tademy, Clifton Taulbert, Michael Wallis, and Mary Logan Wolf.

Love Can Be—a wonderful book, so varied and rich with emotion. Love can be anything: tender, raucous, bittersweet, joyful, transcendent or ridiculous—but it’s always better when shared with animals!”—Diana Gabaldon, bestselling author of the Outlander Series.

“When it comes to the human-animal bond, this work is truly everything “Love Can Be.”  It’s an anthology for our time — inclusive, sympathetic, and joyful.  The contributors represent the broad, beautiful, and rich diversity of our nation, but there is something special that unites them here – their deep love for animals and their desire to celebrate them.”—Kitty Block, Acting President and CEO, The Humane Society of the United States.

“A touching tribute to the creatures we let into our hearts and homes….Literature fans will love the photos of authors and their animal companions that accompany each piece. In keeping with the spirit of the season, proceeds from sales of the book will go to animal charities. This is a heartwarming, hopeful anthology.”—BookPage

Rainbow In Her Pocket

Description Rainbow In Her Pocket by Amanda Jayne

Have you ever seen a sheep standing tiptoe on the ears
of a very tall giraffe while a crowd looks on and cheers?
And have you seen an owl helping them to tug
a rainbow from the sky, like a multi-colored rug?

This is the story of Mala the rhino who can’t help feeling blue after her friend moves away. Her friends, an owl, a sheep and a not-so-humble giraffe get together with sun and create a crazumptious plan to show Mala that blue is as beautiful as all the other colors. This colorful story of friendship, love and loss will delight children while encouraging them to embrace their emotions in a healthy way.

My Thoughts Rainbow In Her Pocket by Amanda Jayne

Narrated by a giraffe named Arnie, ‘A Rainbow In Her Pocket’ is about a rhino named Mala.  Her good friend, the gorilla went to the zoo.  She missed him so much she became depressed (blue).  She tried everything she could to get rid of the blue but just couldn’t shake it.  Her good friends, including Arnie got together to figure out how to help her. They even consulted with a yew tree and the sun.  The sun had the best idea of all.

I can’t tell you anymore as I don’t want to risk spoilers.  This picture book is brightly illustrated and beautifully written by Amanda Jayne.  It teaches children that all feelings are good, even sadness.  I love the way she does it through color to help children really learn the concept.

I don’t know how she could better address the gorilla going to the zoo however; gorillas don’t just walk out of the forest and go to a zoo willingly, as depicted in the book.  They are kidnapped and taken from their family.  I believe children should know that truth.  The practice of kidnapping animals and putting them in zoos for human’s entertainment and even in the name of science is cruel.

Despite that one scene in the book, I highly recommend it.  I think it does a great job of teaching that all feeling are normal, even sadness.  Perhaps parents can use the gorilla going to the zoo as a discussion with their child.  There is certainly a lot to discuss about colors and feelings. I give ‘A Rainbow In Her Pocket’ 4.5 out of 5 stars.
