Where No One Will See

Description Where No One Will See by Felicia Watson

Lucia Scafetti, a Philly private eye, has tried to move out of the shadow of her infamous crime family. She has her own business, her beloved dog Rocco, and she’s starting to date the cute lawyer down the hall. Her life is upended when her notorious hitman father disappears while in search of the diamond and gold coins he stole from his last victim.

Lucia races to unravel the mystery of her father’s disappearance before a crooked and powerful cop beats her to it. Though Lucia’s allies are scanty and her enemies numerous, she tries to resist the questionable help on offer from her Mafiosi family. It looks like Lucia must finally decide on which side of the law she truly belongs, knowing the wrong choice could send her to prison – or an early grave.

Review Where No One Will See by Felicia Watson

Guest Review by Mark

If you are looking for a new mystery to read, ‘Where No One Will See,’ by Felicia Watson might be just the thing that you are looking for.

Set in West Philadelphia in the hot summer of 1995, the novel centers around a kickass heroine named Lucia Scafetti who works as a P.I. Between living in her office and trying to get the word out about her business, Lucia is trying her best to separate herself from her family’s notorious past.

The Scafetti’s are a well-known crime family in Philly, and although Lucia’s father has been safely behind bars for almost two decades, she still has a lot of work to do to keep people from associating her name with his.

Living and working in the basement of her building is not the most glamorous lifestyle, but Lucia gets along well enough, especially after meeting the new tenants of her building, two lawyers who are setting up an office of their own.

One of the lawyers, Hank Narváez, is a handsome, nice guy who takes Lucia out on a date and whom she enjoys spending time with. But there’s a catch. Lucia’s father, Carlo gets unexpectedly released from prison and very shortly afterward, goes missing, leaving Lucia to find out what happened to her father and hopefully find him before everything she loves is put in danger.

Watson’s writing has everything. It’s sharp, punchy and fun. I could tell just from reading this that she has a lot of experience with Italian-American families in her real life, because she nailed the dynamic perfectly!

One thing in particular that appealed to me was the dialog and the quick, rough way that Watson wrote Lucia’s speaking voice. I love to read a main heroine who sounds tough and doesn’t suffer fools. I’d love to read more of this story, and I hope that the author intends to give us more of these characters some time soon!

Hunterland

Description Hunterland by Dana Claire

Supernatural meets Nancy Drew in Dana Claire’s New Young Adult Novel Hunterland

Liam Hunter has warded off hungry vampires, slayed monstrous beasts, and put agonized spirits to rest since he could hold a stake. When trouble comes through the Hunterland message board, alerting them that nurses are dying at high schools across Wisconsin in a string of fishy “suicides,” the Hunter family hits the road to save the
day.

The trail leads to Falkville Falls, where Liam clashes with Olivia Davis, whose maddening family seems inexplicably embroiled in this haunting mess. Olivia has always mothered her little sister, Pepper. But when the Hunter family opens her eyes to the hidden underworld of real monsters prowling the dark, she realizes she can’t protect Pepper from this newest threat by herself. Can the two families work together to uncover who or what is responsible before the next murder, or will this vicious death cycle have no end?

Grab your stakes and your rock salt. Monster hunting class is in session.

Guest Review by Mark

A wickedly fun read for fans of supernatural, ‘Hunterland,’ by Dana Claire is exactly the kind of book that you pick up on a whim and end up devouring in one day.

Olivia is a pretty normal girl living in a small town in Wisconsin, picking up after her rebellious younger sister and still coping with the death of her mother.

Liam Hunter lives a fast-paced, action-packed life on the road, hunting and killing monsters with his father and younger sister.

The Hunter family comes to Olivia’s town to find the monster that has killed three people, but they have no idea what type of monster it is. When Liam and Olivia meet for the first time, he runs into her house with a shotgun and shoots her dresser. Obviously, she’s a bit confused by this. Even more confusing? The fact that her police officer father seems determined to work with Liam and his family in order to track down the mysterious killer.

Just who and what the killer wants is a supernatural puzzle of the highest variety, and one that will take both Olivia’s family and Liam’s to solve.

In the end, things come to a head in a most unexpected way that had me turned pages almost faster than I could read.

Claire has an almost hypnotic tone of writing. She creates an entire world for the reader very quickly, and one that makes you almost feel as though you’ve been there before, even when you know you haven’t.

The romance plot in this was right up my alley and, as a lover of paranormal books, I have to say I enjoyed every minute of this! I hope that Claire writes more like this in the future! But I will be glad to read anything else that she writes, as well.

Whipped

Description Charred by G.P.  Gottlieb

Alene Baron is dealing with frustrated employees, closed schools, and a homeless man who harasses customers outside the door of her café.

Then, two dead bodies turn up in the burned remains of buildings owned by the husband of Alene’s best friend and pastry chef, Ruthie. Both bodies are wearing jackets that once belonged to Ruthie and crumbled in the pockets are the café’s distinctive wrappers. At the same time, Alene’s uncle, a convicted felon, has resurfaced after disappearing for 22 years. It’s all too much for the owner of the Whipped and Sipped Café.

‘Charred: A Whipped and Sipped Mystery,’ by G.P. Gottlieb is a thrill ride from page one all the way to the amazing recipes that are shared at the end!

I loved the mystery in this book, and watching how it all played out really gave me a satisfying reading experience. I loved the cast of characters in this one. From Alene, the funny, kind, feisty heroine, to Kofi, the tall, kind friend whose girlfriend Kacey wants nothing more than to protect him.

My favorite character was probably Alene’s father, Cal, who lives with her and takes care of her children while they are off school due to the pandemic. Cal’s main concern throughout the novel is the reappearance of his brother, Finn who went missing after robbing a bank years earlier.

Although Finn served his time in prison, he disappeared shortly after his release, leaving his wife and their son to pick up the pieces without him. Now he has suddenly begun texting Cal and neither Alene, nor her father know what to think of this development. Additionally, there is the matter of the dead body that Kofi finds in a burned building.

Alene’s boyfriend, Frank is a cop, and he begins investigating the case without knowing that Kofi is involved, which adds another layer to the stress that Alene is facing. And when another body is soon found, things begin to ramp up for the Whipped and Sipped crew, and for Alene, specifically.

I loved the tension in the plot of this book, I found it just perfect for a cozy mystery. Gottlieb has a knack for pacing, that became obvious very early on in reading ‘Charred.’ All in all, I’d say that this novel is, much like one of the culinary delights at the Whipped and Sipped Cafe, a truly delicious treat that begs to be savored. I give it 5 delicious stars.

Side note, as a guest reviewer of Teddy’s and knowing that she has been a vegan for over 30 years, I must point our that not only is the fictitious Whipped and Sipped Café, in the book, vegan but the recipes in the back of the book are vegan as well.
