“By the time Bud reached 19th street, he began to dawdle so that people could go by him, and then speed up in case he could throw off some burly figure in a trench coat he’d swear he’d gotten a glimpse of when he glanced over at a storefront window keeping pace and then slackening off again.”

Set in both Miami and New York in the 1950s, ‘Fast Times, Big City,’ by Shelly Frome is the tale of a man, a briefcase and a very short window of time.

Bud is a simple man. As a sports reporter in Miami, he isn’t a fan of commitment and doesn’t have a special lady in his life. But that’s all about to change. However, the lady in question may not be exactly what he was expecting.

A beautiful, blonde Marilyn Monroe lookalike has stolen a mysterious briefcase from a well-known local mobster named Escobar. Why is this Bud’s problem, you may be wondering? Because Bud’s uncle may have been the one to give it to her.

After being asked by his mother to check in on her little brother, Bud visits his uncle to discover that the man is recovering from a poker game gone wrong and a brush with Escobar.

Bud attempts to talk to Escobar, only to be sent to New York City to hunt down the blonde and find the briefcase. But with little information to go on to find the woman, Bud gets in over his head pretty quickly and he must figure out how to pull himself out of this mess.

I have always been a fan of Shelly Frome’s books when I have read them before and this one was no exception. His writing is always upbeat, fast-paced and fun. I always know I’m in for a great time when I read one of his books!

‘Sliding his SEAL blade from its scabbard with his right hand from his waist-belt, he didn’t have time to go for a better target higher up, so he went for the man’s liver, buried the blade in it, and twisted.’

Josh Kavanagh has not had a very good run of things lately. And not just because he spends the beginning of this book fighting his way through a landmine-filled patch of southern Venezuela– no, the bad luck began before that.

See, Josh’s wife, Rachel was recently attacked and is now comatose, with little hope of ever regaining consciousness.

Most people might find it difficult to get out of bed under those circumstances, but Josh blocks out his emotions by putting himself entirely into his work. And what is Josh’s work, you ask? He is the commander of a special black ops military group. Which is, of course, not exactly the kind of job where you can call in sick.

Josh and his partner, Cheéte parachute into the Venezuelan countryside to find and capture a man named Damien Bran. Bran is a known sex trafficker and an all-around bad guy. He is also the man that is responsible for Rachel’s attack.

So, it’s safe to say that Josh has several reasons for attempting to capture Bran. But things do not go as easily as Josh plans when he gets his feet on the ground and…you are going to have to read the book to find out exactly what happens!

‘Never For Glory,’ is a dynamite book to sink your teeth into, with lots of heart-pounding action and witty dialog. I had a great time reading this from start to finish and I’m sure that you will, too. If you have not read the first book in the Josh Kavanagh series, ‘The Patriot Oath,’ I would recommend picking that one up as well!

‘Pistol Rose and the Wedding that Sparked a War’ by Michael Ryan Hahn is unlike any other book that I have ever read. This was a wild ride from start to finish, and I loved absolutely every second!

The world that Hahn has created in this book is so vivid, detailed and expressive, I found myself forgetting that I was reading a book and not watching a movie as I read along.

This is a story that takes place in a fictional world where two very different types of people are on the brink of war. First, there are the Strelkie, a technologically advanced people that live in a shining city run by a king that they believe is akin to a god.

Below them, in the dirty outskirts of the city, are the Punimin, who own no technology and shun the king’s laws. All Punimin stay to their family professions, and all Punimin families are given names that correspond with that profession. Which is why the main character, Pistol Rose, who comes from a family of gun makers, is more than prepared to fight for what she desires. And in this case, what she desires is the son of a nearby clock maker.

But when Pistol Rose and Clock Dancin’ appeal to their local Strelkie emissary for permission to get married, they are refused and the couple quickly realizes that they must take things into their own hands if they wish to be together.

This is a wonderful read that combines fantasy and steampunk in a totally new and epic way! I loved Rose’s strong female characterization, and the way that her family rallied around her to fight for both their rights and her love.

This novel is well worth the read for any lovers of adventure stories or steampunk, or even if you’ve never read either and wish to try something new!

‘Pistol Rose and the Wedding That Parked a War’ is Michael’s debut novel and the first in a planned 7- part series, The Anthem of Ash & Pistols. He previously wrote a standalone horror novella called ‘Children of the Storm’. He recently released an adventure podcast in the style of old radio plays called Fire Pockets. His stories aim to weave exciting action with humor and heart, with complicated villains—probably because of his upbringing. He comes from a big ol’ raucous family, and he survived a shockingly bruising (but not altogether unfun) cadre of violently delinquent Boy Scouts to become an Eagle Scout. He loves fight scenes.

Michael won a ScreenCraft competition that led to development with Bad Robot. He’s a 3x ScreenCraft Finalist, and has 18 other accolades from major screenwriting competitions, including AFF and Final Big Break.
