Description Lullaby Road by James Anderson

Winter has come to Route 117, a remote road through the high desert of Utah trafficked only by those looking to escape the world and those the world has rejected. Local truck driver Jones, still in mourning over the devastating murder of his lover Claire, is trying to get through another season of his job navigating treacherous roads and sudden snowfall without accident when a mute Hispanic child is placed in Jones’s path at a seedy truck stop along his route bearing a note that simply reads “Please, Ben. Bad trouble. My son. Take him today. His name is Juan. Trust you only. Tell no one. Pedro.” From that moment forward, nothing will ever be the same. Not for Ben. Not for the child. And not for anyone along the seemingly empty stretch of road known as Route 117.

Despite deep misgivings, and without any hint of who the child is or the grave danger he’s facing, Jones takes the child with him and sets out into a landscape that is as dangerous as it is beautiful and silent. With the help of his eccentric neighbors—Phyllis, who turned up one day in her Rolls-Royce with two children in tow and the FBI on her tail; Andy, a Utah State Trooper who is on or off duty depending on if his hat is on or off his head; and Roy, an ex–coal miner who has lived in Rockmuse, off Highway 117, his whole life and survives on odd jobs and the kindness of his neighbors—Jones uncovers buried secrets of the desert that are far more painful than he could have imagined.

In LULLABY ROAD, readers will find themselves enthralled by Anderson’s vivid sense of place and his beautiful and heartbreaking narrative.

My Thoughts Lullaby Road by James Anderson

Ben is a trucker who does deliveries in a rural desert area in Utah on highway 117. The people who live along the route are “eccentrics, fugitives, and those looking to escape the world.”  One early morning he stops at the truck stop he stops at every morning to fuel up but there is a surprise waiting for him.

A boy is left there with a note from an acquaintance, Pedro, asking him to look after his son and tell no one. Ben contemplates notifying the police but rules it out because he doesn’t know what kind of trouble Pedro has gotten himself into.  The boy has a dog that will not leave his side so Ben gets them both in the truck.  Then a woman shows up with her baby and asks him to take her for the day.  They are good friends and he owes the woman his life so reluctantly he complies.

Thus starts off an adventure that will change Ben forever.  The child eventually needs to pee and that is when he discovers that the boy is actually a girl.  Why did Pedro say “his son”?

‘Lullaby Road’ is a sequel to the book ‘The Never-open Desert Diner’ but can easily be read without reading the first book.  However, you are going to want to read the first book.  I haven’t but just got it and can’t wait to start reading it!  ‘Lullaby Road’ is hard to put down!  I was enveloped by the harsh, yet beautiful landscape, the quirky characters, and the plot.  Though it is suspenseful it is written in literary prose so literary fiction lovers will get a lot out of it.  I certainly did!

I highly recommend this atmospheric novel and think it would be a great book club book.  I also think it would make a great gift for book lovers!  I give it 5 out of 5 stars.

My Thoughts Quantum Success: 7 Essential Laws for a Thriving, Joyful, Prosperous Relationship with Work, Money by Christy Whitman

If you want to success in your career, there are lots of books out there to help. Some are more helpful than others, so how do you choose? First, I don’t think that any one book has all of the answers. Also, some books work well for some but not for others. It’s a good idea to read 3 or more.

One I can certainly recommend is ‘Quantum Success’ by Christy Whitman. She uses the “law of attraction” in her method. It has been used before but not quite like Ms. Whitman uses it. She gives you a fresh take on the concept. She also provides a road map with fun exercises for you to complete and real life examples.

I know lots of people who read self-help book after self-help books about how to success in business. However, just reading these types of books doesn’t work. You really need to invest the time to work through the exercises. Sometimes it helps to read the same book over and over and do the exercises again. Once you do the work and make a plan, you can always tweak it. You are planning for the rest of your life so you owe it to yourself to invest in the time, up front. I love Christy Whitman’s fresh approach and give ‘Quantum Success’ 5 out of 5 stars.

Building Mountains From Dust

Description Building Mountains From Dust by Kimberly Young

Like ‘When Breath Becomes Air’ by Paul Kalanithi and Abraham Verghese, ‘Building Mountains from Dust’, award winning author, Kimberly Young shares her story of survival and inspiration. At fifty, Kimberly’s structured, organized, and driven life is thrown into a tailspin when she is diagnosed with advanced staged lung cancer.

Never a smoker, Kimberly makes frank reflections about her decision not to have children, and how she makes peace with her mother, who abandoned her over fifteen years ago. This is a story about heart-wrenching life lessons, forgiveness, and about finding faith, as in a tragic twist of fate; Kimberly survives her cancer when her husband of twenty years suddenly dies.

My Thoughts Building Mountains from Dust by Kimberly S. Young

Dr. Kimberly Young is a 50 year old woman who lives a pretty healthy life style.  She eats well and works out.  She doesn’t smoke and only drinks an occasional glass of wine. Yet, she has a nagging cough.  She goes to see her doctor and finds out she has lung cancer.  She is stunned! Her husband “Jim is 20 years older and the one with health issues, not her”, she thinks to herself.

She finds out the cancer is in her lymph nodes and that makes her a candidate for chemo, not surgery.  She wishes they could just cut it out of her.  They will see if surgery is an option after the chemo.  First they need to get the cancer down to a more manageable size.  Luckily, Kimberly’s husband and close friends rally around her and help her keep a positive attitude.  They rally her to fight and she gears up for battle.

After the chemo the cancer has shrunk but Jim dyes soon after that.  Now she is on her own to continue her battle.  However, her friends still rally.

Kimberly Young is a professor in psychology at a university and specializes in internet addiction.  Her colleagues and boss are also very supportive and she is able to take the time she needs for treatments and being sick from the treatments.

Dr. Young as proven herself as a great writer with her numerous books on net addiction as well as a beautifully written work of fiction titled, ‘The Eight Wonder’.  I had the pleasure of reading it when it was published. ‘Building Mountains From Dust’ is another testament to her excellent writing skills, her strength of character, courage and how she can inspire people.  She will not “go gently into the goodnight!” She is a warrior!  I highly recommend ‘Building Mountains From Dust’ to anyone who likes a great read as well as those battling health issues or their friends and family!

5/5
