House Always Wins

Anna Christiansen’s small-town life is about to go haywire. A young reporter stuck in a dead-end job, Anna falls head over heels for an interview subject, the bass player in an up-and-coming alt band. In short order, she pulls up stakes, moves to Las Vegas, gets married and pregnant, and buys a big fixer-upper haunted by the ghost of a Sin City racketeer.

That’s when Anna gets notice from a corrupt casino owner that he’s buying up all the properties on her street to make way for a parking lot. But Anna has poured her heart and soul into the house and digs in hard to fight the system — not the easiest of tasks in a city where bribery, mayhem, and murder are standard operating procedures.

Can Anna’s tough-guy ghost provide the help she needs to prevail in this dangerous cat-and-mouse game? Will Anna’s life be left in ruins? Or worse?

“It’s pure Vegas, told from an insider’s perspective.”- Anthony Curtis, Huntington Press

My Thoughts House Always Wins: Vegas Ghost Story by Brian Rouff

I have read a few Las Vegas mysteries but none quite like this.  While most center on the strip where the tourists are, ‘The House Always Wins focuses more on the locals.
I love the beginning with Anna’s letter to her aunt.  It sets the tone while she writes about what happened to her after her wedding and moving to Las Vegas with her husband.  They buy an old fixer upper and Anna enjoys working on it.  However, she discovers a ghost living there.

I love the friendly ghost that befriends Anna.  There is a local developer who is hell bent on buying up property in the neighborhood but Anna won’t sell.  He proceeds to strong arm her into it but the ghost is on her side and protects Anna.  Many may think a friendly ghost sounds sappy but in Brian Rouff’s hands, it is an excellent element of the story.
‘The House Always Wins’ is a must read for mystery readers.

Deadly Ground

Deadly Ground” – a riveting story about the human race under threat, with a rare DNA condition providing a second chance for humanity. A fast-paced novel that reads like an apocalypse movie with a biological viral disease, some romance, and aliens in the mix, centered on the unforgettable human main character AB, who becomes the hope for humanity’s regeneration.

By author Thomas W. Starbuck, whose storyline for “Deadly Ground” was adapted and written by Judy Belshe-Toernblom.

My Thoughts Deadly Ground by Thomas W. Starbuck and Judy Belshe-Toernblom

There is a deadly virus quickly making its way across the USA.  AB, a scientist working for the CDC is working on a vaccination.  Once someone gets the virus, they die, there is no way to save them, and so a vaccine is the only hope.  However, the virus is airborne and picks up speed.  It travels all over the world. AB finds himself to be the only survivor. Luckily his dog friend, Winnie survives as well so he has a companion.

Together AB and Winnie struggle to survive and run across many mishaps along the way.  After searching tirelessly for any other survivors and coming up empty, they go back to their home town to live out the rest of their days.  This gives AB a lot of time to contemplate his life and realize that he lost his chance to find that someone special to spend the rest of his life with. He really wanted to have a woman in his life and to experience romance.  How long can he survive without human love and companionship?  How long can anyone?

This is a very short book of 158 pages, almost a novella.  It is an easy read but really makes the reader think about what it would be like to be the last person on earth.  AB becomes the new Adam but where will he find a new Eve to start the world over?  It is well written and really captures the desolate feel of the new landscape, without humans.  It’s a great post apocalyptic and I am excited to learn that there is going to be a sequel.  I can hardly wait! I think ‘Deadly Ground’ would make a great movie as well.

About Thomas W. StarbuckDeadly Ground by Thomas W. Starbuck and Judy Belshe-Toernblom

Thomas W. Starbuck, an eternal optimist, finds joy in everything around him – from quality time with his active family to quiet meditation and contemplation about the world around him. Never living life in the status quo, Tom had an idea for a story.

This spark of an idea for a screenplay turned into Tom’s first novel, ‘Deadly Ground’, published in April 2018. To give Deadly Ground the soul it needed, Tom worked with gifted writer, Judy Belshe-Toernblom, on both the screenplay and novel, and they were recognized by the 2018 Capital Fund Screenplay Competition Top 100.

Tom is the father of two daughters and a beloved granddaughter, who one of the Deadly Ground characters was named after. He lives with his wife of 45 years in Des Moines, Iowa, where he graduated from Drake University and worked in financial services for 32 years prior to retirement in 2009.

221 BC

Description 221 BC: Scroll 1 of Narmer War by Kendall Price and Laura Vosika

Set against the backdrop of the Ptolemaic Kingdom, an alternate history unfolds, linking the power of the pharaohs to magic. Brother is pitted against brother in a race to find twelve amulets, lost with the ancient pharaoh, and unlock their powers. Whoever holds the amulets holds that power; to save the world…or destroy it.

My Thoughts 221 BC: Scroll 1 of Narmer War by Kendall Price and Laura Vosika

King Ptolemy IV, Macedonian ruler of Egypt mentor and good friend, Qibo is dead.  The king calls on his trusted team to get to the bottom of why Qibo was so brutally murdered. It is immediately suspected that it has something to do with the ancient tablets that he had been painstakingly transcribing.  The tablets are believed to hold secrets to unlocking magical powers of 12 amulets.  They don’t want these magical powers to get in the wrong hands as they may be able to take control of the kingdom.

I found the ancient history fascinating.  It is quite apparent that the authors did a lot of research.  The characters were well thought out and came to life for me.  Though there were a couple parts that dragged a bit, I found ‘221 B.C.’ very engaging and hard to put down.  I felt as if I were watching a movie rather than reading a book.  I also liked the occasional romance to break up the heavier parts of war and exciting twists.  The novel is categorized in part, for young adults however, I think it may be a bit to dense for most in that age group.

If you enjoy historical mystery, especially from ancient times, I highly recommend ‘221 B.C.’  This is book one of a new series and I can hardly wait for book 2!  Now that the numerous cast of characters have been introduced, I think book 2 will have even better flow and it will be getting to know some of the characters better.  I also hope that someone buys the rights to make a movie!  I really think it would play well on the big screen.
