The path of true love never runs straight. Alonso and Luisa love each other, However there are a few obstacles to their happiness: the husband she was forced to marry; her uncle, the Regent of Spain; and Alonso’s Jewish family. Mix in the meddlesome Natale, whose loyalty is always to the highest bidder, and you have a story of a courageous couple determined to be happy together, despite the cards being stacked against them.

Using the tumultuous period of Spain immediately following the deaths of Ferdinand and Isabella as her canvas, Erika Rummel paints a portrait of an era where Cardinals hold supreme power, Jews are forcibly converted to Christianity, and the spies of the Inquisition are everywhere.

My Thoughts on Inquisitor’s Niece by Erika Rummel

During the time of the Spanish inquisition (16th century), Alonso’s father has been arrested for practicing Judaism.  Now the entire family is at risk.  Alonso is a doctor but under the law, he won’t be able to practice for 10 years.  How will he make a living and support the rest of his family?

His friend, Natale, suggests he requests a dispensation so he can continue practicing medicine.  After all, why should he suffer for the sins of his father?

Is Natale really looking out for Alonso?  His father has told him not to trust anyone but Natale is his friend.  Isn’t he?

At the same time Alonso keeps having a dream with a beautiful girl and on the same day he get his dispensation granted, he spots the girl in a crowd.  He eventually meets her face to face.  Her name is Luisa and they fall in love but there are complications.  She is forced into a loveless marriage by her Uncle, the Regent of Spain.  There is also the question of religion.  Alonso is a Jew even though he converted to Christianity to stay within the law.

Will Alonso and Luisa be able to get married and escape the ramifications of the church? Will the church find out Alonso is a closeted Jew and burn him at the stake, like they did to his father? My lips are sealed!  I highly recommend ‘The Inquisitor’s Niece’ to all historical fiction lovers.
