I just found out that today was National Cat Day. As many of you who have been following my website for awhile, you already know that my dear cat Amanda passed on just before the new year. I loved her dearly and still miss her so much.
I kept meaning to give you an update on our family status but have just been crazy Busy.
In May, I found out about a Snowshoe cat that was in a foster home needed a new home fast. I wasn’t sure if I was ready for a new cat in our family yet. I always worry when I lose a pet that I will put certain expectations on a new pet if I get one too soon. However, Bill and I decided to meet the cat in need, Meeka. Of course, it was love at first sight for me and we brought her home.
Luckily, like Amanda, Meeka loves to cuddle and sleeps with me every night all cuddles against me. She has really filled that void. She also like to give and receive kisses. However, she is the most vocal cat I have ever known. She is very good at communicating what she wants and when she is displeased.
When we adopted her back in May, she was a hefty 15 pounds. The vet insisted that she needed to be on a diet and only be fed canned food. The reason for canned food is the higher water content. So, I put her on a diet right away. She didn’t mind the canned food at all, she just wanted more of it and has made that abundantly clear, every single day. Despite her protests, she has lost 3 pounds to date. Two more pounds to go. After she lost the first two pound she has been a lot more active, running up and down the stairs and following me everywhere! I mean EVERYWHERE! She cries outside the door if I am in the bathroom. LOL! The good thing though is that she is now getting exercise without even realizing it is part of her weight loss plan.
Meeka is about 6 years old. She is the first non-black cat I have had.
Congrats on your new addition. She is adorable! You two seem to be great friends already. Happy for you!
Thanks Margie!
I am so happy for you. I have a small shelter for elderly cats. Right now I have 13. I love them all dearly, and we are all getting ready for winter. I live in the south, and out in the country, so most of them stay outside. I do have a fenced in yard, and they never wander. To old to do all the prowling.
Wow, 13! I’m sure I would love them all dearly too. Meeka is about 6 so not too old but Amanda was only 6 when she passed. It was so heart breaking. I still start crying when I think about it.
I think everyday is National Cat and Dog Day.Meeka is lucky to have found a good family. She is beautiful.
I agree with you Denise. Meeka and DJ are our children and we spoil them.
I loved reading about your Meeka and still sorry about your loss of Amanda. I have two very vocal, very attached cats who cry outside any closed door if I am inside…and tell me all kinds of things, every day. I have never had two who were so chatty! I am happy Meeka has a new home with you.
Meeka is the most vocal cat I ever met. She was way too over weight when we got her, due to her past living situation. I had to put her on a diet and I am sure she is calling me the food police or worse. However, she has lost 3 pounds so far and is running around like a kitten again so I know she is feeling better. She was a couch potato when we first got her. She follows me everywhere, I get no privacy. If I shut a door, like when I want a moment to myself in the bathroom she screams. It’s kind of pathetic. LOL! However, I do love her dearly.
She sounds like a super special girl! 🙂
I just read this post again about Meeka and it made me smile. You have such a heart for animals, Teddy. Meeka is lucky to be part of your family.
