One of my New Year’s resolutions is to catch up on writing and posting my book reviews.  My reading speed has increased so much this year that I can’t seem to keep up with reviewing all of the books I have read.  However, this book review is right on time.  I thought it would be fun to welcome 2013 with a review and giveaway of epic proportions.  So, here it is..

About Bruce by Peter Ames Carlin (description from GoodReads.com):

This sweeping biography of Bruce Springsteen is the first in 25 years to be written with the cooperation of Springsteen himself. With unfettered access to the artist, his family, band members and longtime manager/producer Jon Landau, acclaimed music writer and critic Peter Ames Carlin presents an intimate and vivid portrait.

My Review:

Wow, were to start.  First I must say that I am a huge Bruce Springsteen fan!  When Kaitlyn McCrystal of Touchstone Publicity/Simon & Schuster, Inc asked me if I wanted to review this title I jumped!  That said, as with other biographies I have read of people I adore, there was a thread of disappointment.  I find out the person I idolize is actually human and has faults, just like the rest of us.  Okay, so I knew Bruce was human but I guess I don’t look for faults in those I love.

Told in mostly chronological order, Peter Ames Carlin starts with Bruce’s childhood in working class New Jersey.  His father was an alcoholic and not there through much of his childhood.  It was tough but he grew up and knew he wanted to write and perform music. Carlin goes through Bruce’s road stardom, which was quite rough to begin.

As I read this biography, there were moments where I felt that I was there, experiencing what Bruce experienced.  Then there were times I felt I was reading a biography.  Both good things, IMO.  I couldn’t put this book down and finished it in two days.

I found Bruce a riveting read and highly recommend it!
