Description Midnight Call by Jode Susan Millman

Could you ever suspect that your mentor was a cold-blooded killer?

Attorney Jessie Martin couldn’t– at least not until she answers the midnight call.

Late one August night, her mentor/confidante and popular high school teacher Terrence Butterfield calls, admits he’s killed someone and pleads for Jessie’s help. Out of loyalty, she rushes to his aid, unaware that she’s risking her love, her career, her life and that of her unborn child.

When the police arrive, her presence raises questions as to her role in the gruesome slaughter of the teenage boy found in Terrence’s basement. Did Terrence call her as a lawyer or a friend? Was she somehow responsible for the murder?

To dismiss the murder charges Terrence betrays Jessie, making her wonder whether he’d been a monster in disguise all along.

To prove her innocence, Jessie must untangle the web of betrayals and the shocking truths behind the homicide. This quest turns out to be the fight of her life

Interview With Jode Susan Millman

Tell us about your previous books?

JSM: My father, Sandy Millman, had written a guide to Broadway Theater, “SEATS: NEW YORK” in 1999, which was natural outgrowth of our family’s love of entertainment. Our family had always attended concerts, sports events, ballet, festivals and the theater. The theater was part of our lives. In fact, while I attended law school, I’d commute home for a shift as a rock and roll DJ on WPDH in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. That’s where I met my husband, Mike Harris – he was on the air before me. Also, I’d been a concert promoter on the Syracuse University Concert Board, so assuming the helm of SEATS was a natural decision, a legacy from my father. Writing a guidebook is much different than writing a novel. It is collaborative. I not only wrote the book, but managed a staff of five; researchers, graphic artist and photographers to generate the seating charts and contents for the guide. We visited every theater, created seating plan templates, gathered information about transportation, parking and developed our “concierge” section. It was exhilarating and exhausting – taking nine months to create each edition.

You are involved in several philanthropic endeavors. Can you talk about what they are?

JSM:  Philanthropy is a huge part of my life. I believe that each of us has the opportunity, and obligation, to make our communities a better place. This idea germinated in me at a young age when I volunteered at the Children’s room of the Adriance Memorial Library in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.. As an adult, I’ve continued that commitment by dedicating my time to non-profits. I presently sit on the board of the Dyson foundation, which is the preeminent family foundation in the Hudson Valley. It’s a major funder of education, health care, human services and the arts. Through them, I’ve been able to support Adriance’s purchase of a new Book Mobile, renovate the infra-structure of the Bardavon Theater, develop a student international film festival, and fund the legal clinic programs at my law school alma mater, Syracuse College of Law.

What struggles did you face while writing this book?

JSM: THE MIDNIGHT CALL was my first attempt at writing crime fiction, and honestly, I didn’t have a clue about how to do it.Trying to figure out how to write a novel was a real struggle. All attorneys are storytellers. It is our job to convey our client’s narratives to a judge or jury in a convincing way. I knew how to write litigation and present my client’s stories to the court, but I realized that there’s very little similarity in the writing styles used in the law and literature. Before I wrote THE MIDNIGHT CALL, I was, and am, an avid reader. I read for pleasure, not with a technical eye. While I was working on SEATS, I obtained a Masters of English Literature. That was my first step toward learning about plot, characterization, pacing, setting, point of view, theme and criticism. Shortly after the publication of the third edition of SEATS: NEW YORK in 2008, I began attending workshops and learning about the craft of writing and the uphill battle toward publication. It truly is a marathon, not a sprint. I’m still steeped in the learning process and hopefully the writing of my next novel will come more naturally as I’ll be thinking like a writer, not a lawyer.

Thanks to Shailyn Tavella of  Minotaur Books, I am giving away 3 print copies of Graves (Abby Endicott 2) by Pamela Wechsler.

Description of Graves (Abby Endicott 2) by Pamela Wechsler

Abby Endicott, the chief of the District Attorney’s homicide unit in Boston, returns in the heart-racing follow-up to Mission Hill.

Things are looking good for Abby: she’s top pick to be the next District Attorney, and her musician boyfriend Ty has moved in, despite her upper crust family’s objections. But a serial killer is on the loose, and with two college-aged girls dead and another missing, time is running out. When the sons of a prominent government official are linked to the murders, Abby pushes back, stopping at nothing to find justice for the girls. This time, the killer could be right under her nose, and she may be the next victim.

In The Graves, former prosecutor turned television writer Pamela Wechsler delivers a tense and enthralling Boston-set thriller about the intersection of power, privilege, and justice.

A Question Of Devotion

Then she saw it – a sheet of paper in the mailbox, underneath the mail. It was white with large black letters and said LEAVE IT ALONE.

Mrs. B has a quiet life, and she likes it that way. Morning pinochle games at St. Mary’s Senior Center. Afternoon lunches with Myrtle, Anne and Rose. Peaceful evenings with a cup of coffee and the classic movie channel.

But one day she wakes to a phone call, which leads to consequences she could never have foreseen. Secrets snowball and threaten to change the neighborhood of Burchfield forever. Someone has to make things right. It’s up to Mrs. B.

Praise for Question of Devotion by Anita Kulina

“If you can picture Columbo when he’s retired, and spending more time in church and the kitchen, and Polish, and wearing a babushka, you have a sense of the down-home detective that Anita Kulina has created. I love Mrs. B!”-Brian O’Neill, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette columnist and author of The Paris of Appalachia

“A Question of Devotion is a comforting snapshot of an aging population, where the way of life is still bound by churches, neighborhoods, and countries of origin. Its heroine, Mrs. B, is not just an old woman living out her twilight years at the senior center, but an able detective engaged in solving a mystery as cozy as cocoa and afghans on a cold Western Pennsylvania day.”-Kathryn Miller Haines, author of the Rosie Winter Mysteries and the Iris Anderson Mysteries

About Anita KulinaQuestion of Devotion by Anita Kulina

Like most people who love to write, Anita Kulina has been telling stories since she was old enough to hold a pen. Her first publication was in the letters-to-the-editor column of Adventure Comics #341. Nowadays, much of her work centers on the rich and colorful lives of Pittsburgh’s working poor. Since Anita spent much of her life in those ranks, it’s a subject dear to her heart.

Her book Millhunks and Renegades won her the Achievement in Literature award from the community of Hazelwood in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She is currently at work on the next two Mrs. B books.
