This World of Love and Strife

Description This World of Love and Strife by Shawn Mackey

It is the duty of the Vanguard to protect the world from unseen demonic forces.

But what if the organization falls to corruption? Their reformation is up to Cato, a disgraced former member who discovers many of the elite using their powerful positions and martial skills for ill-gotten gains rather than fulfilling their true purpose: aiding mankind in a secret war against their eternal foe.

Aldous is a Vanguard who fell from grace after being stricken with vampirism by a mysterious figure known as the White Lady. His increasingly vile appetites are tolerated because his knowledge as an alchemist is vital in the Vanguard’s battle against the demons. When those desires lead to the abduction of the woman Cato loves, Cato wages a one-man war against Aldous and his werewolf henchman.

Mephisto’s house key slipped from his hand as he attempted to unlock the front door. Squatting down to pick it back up, he had no trouble finding the key due to the bright light of the full moon. As he reached to grab it, a shadow cast over his hand so briefly, he thought it was his imagination. Regardless, he casually placed a hand in his left pocket, clutching the handle of his derringer as he rose back to his feet with the key in the other hand. A strong grip suddenly clenched under his elbow, and before Mephisto could turn around, he felt the cold barrel of a gun poke his back.

“No sudden moves,” said a familiar voice. “I’m not here to rob you or anything. I want to do business.”

“Then why not meet me at the usual place, my friend?” Mephisto asked. Though his heart pounded in his chest, he kept his composure. He always had a bad feeling about Cato. There was a chance his worst fears were about to come true. The man was certainly on something.

“I had to take this to you directly. You’ll see,” Cato said, lowering his gun and letting go of Mephisto’s arm. He carefully removed his hand from his pocket.

“I’m turning around,” Mephisto said as he did so slowly. Cato still held the gun at his side. On the ground behind him was a massive, bulging brown sack. It was a wonder he was able to sneak behind him with that slung over one shoulder.

“Don’t take this personally,” Cato said as he reached into Mephisto’s pocket and removed the derringer. “I’d be pretty on edge too if the roles were reversed. When I’ve shown you what I’ve got, you’ll look back on this and laugh.”

“Any reason you haven’t told me yet?”

“You’ll see,” Cato said, pocketing the derringer and then holstering his gun. He picked up the brown sack with care and motioned to the door. “Let’s go inside.”

“If you say so, my friend,” Mephisto said as he unlocked the door. Those last two words were laughably forced. However, most of his fear had given way to curiosity—even excitement.

“Can you make coffee?” Cato asked as they stepped inside. Mephisto flicked on the light switch, keeping his peripheral on his guest as he placed the sack on the entry room floor.

“One thing at a time. I hate to be rude, but I’d like to see what you’ve got in there before we go any further.”

“Mostly trinkets,” Cato said, pulling out a large gold cross. It was embedded with a variety of jewels. Though it was valuable, it was a disappointment.

“And?”

“Here,” Cato went on, removing a book. Mephisto took the tome, placing it on top of the nearest table. When he noticed the name “Linus Elliot” on the cover, he pushed aside all the various garbage on the tabletop so that he could open it. The pages were pristine, and though he was eager to pour over their contents, Cato was removing more items from the seemingly bottomless bag.

“Okay,” Mephisto said, closing the book. “You’ve got me intrigued. Let’s go into the living room.”

“Don’t forget the coffee.”

“I suppose so,” he said, leading Cato to the next room. His guest sat on the couch and began removing items one by one and placing them on the tables and floor. Though Mephisto wanted to protest over his handling of some of them, especially a green glass statue of an elephant, he thought it better to make the coffee than potentially provoke his ire.

Simple coffee was an odd request of Cato. Despite showing up at Mephisto’s house in the middle of the night, the man didn’t appear strung out or angry, rather focused and sober-minded. Tracking this location took a certain degree of dedication. None of his associates were aware of the place. That had more to do with his insignificance than difficulty. He was merely a merchant. If anything, he expected to get in trouble due to his dealing with Cato, not due to Cato himself. Mephisto had vastly underestimated the former Vanguard. Even their weaklings weren’t to be trifled with, and though an apostate, he had the reputation of a prodigy. His master, Basil, had been one of the best.

“That’s quite the collection,” Mephisto said as he returned with two mugs of coffee. He counted twenty-four items in all, none of them entirely useless. It would net them a pretty penny, and though the quantity was more than Cato’s usual haul, the quantity didn’t warrant the intrusion.

“I’d hope so. I need the money.”

“It’ll get you quite a bit even though this stuff isn’t exactly in demand. We’ll find buyers, but some of it will take months to sell. Maybe even a year.”

“That’s unacceptable,” Cato said. As those words left his mouth, Mephisto dropped his mug, his stomach clenching to the point of nausea. The coffee rolled across the wood floor toward one of the books. For a few seconds, Mephisto was powerless to move it away, his eyes glued to Cato’s holster. Cato lunged forward, prompting Mephisto to fall back onto the sofa.

Praise This World of Love and Strife by Shawn Mackey

“While This World of Love and Strife will reach horror audiences, it also should be included in fantasy and thriller library collections as a strong example of the strengths that can emerge from a story that embraces different genres with powerful characters and scenarios that are unpredictable and engrossing.- D. Donovan, Midwest Book Review

“The thrills build and build and never let up. The characters feel like real people. Even the vampires and werewolf! Best of all was the protagonist. He starts as kind of an eccentric and a bit of a jerk, but by the end I couldn’t get enough of him. I highly recommend this book for people who don’t mind horror with a heaping dose of action.”- John Martin, Amazon

Hawkesmoor

Description Hawkesmoor: Novel of Vampire & Faerie by Anne Merino

Vampires, Romance and dark Celtic Mysticism fuse and blaze in this epic tale set in Manhattan, Yorkshire, England — and time itself.

Robin Dashwood, a handsome and charming British vampire with long gone aristocratic connections, is about to be thrown into an epic adventure that will shine light upon the rise of the vampire. This is the last thing he could imagine himself doing. Robin prefers to hide in plain sight, having devised a quiet life for himself in New York as a history professor in hopes of avoiding other more powerful vampires and their dangerous, decadent political machinations.

A chance encounter in a Manhattan art gallery introduces him to the beautiful Lady Caroline DeBarry and reveals a vicious murder from Robin’s human past. In search of answers to this historical mystery, he returns home to England and to Caroline who has captured his heart. As Robin uncovers the truth, he finds traces of a far more ancient and shrouded realm than even that of the vampire. This will shake the foundations of vampire lore and its brutal hierarchy, placing Lady Caroline in terrible danger and setting in motion events that will lead to a final bloody confrontation between a revenant army and humankind.

Hawkesmoor is the first book in a trilogy that will continue the eerie adventures of Robin Dashwood — a very British vampire.

Guest Review  Hawkesmoor: Novel of Vampire & Faerie by Anne Merino

Review by Sol A.

An entertaining read that draws a lot of inspiration from vampire stories of the same genre, ‘Hawkesmoor: A Novel of Vampire and Faerie’ is really everything that you could want in a vampire novel. Brooding handsome guy? Check. Romantic English country manor house? Check. Slightly naive but beautiful love interest? Check. As a long time lover of paranormal and vampire stories, this is like my catnip and Anne Merino executes it well as far as plotting.

The basic premise is this: Robin Dashwood is a former Earl (of the fancy, English variety) who disappears under mysterious circumstances one night in the 1700’s. No one in his family (including his former fiancée, Elizabeth) realizes that he was turned into a vampire. In present day, Robin lives a seemingly normal life in New York City working as a college professor. Normal, of course, except for the fact that he occasionally needs to drink blood to survive. But it is during the course of his normal routine that he gets invited to a showing at the Glockner Gallery of the assets of Hawkesmoor, his former estate and discovers that his ex-fiancée died suspiciously shortly after marrying his cousin 300 years earlier. Now Robin must unravel the truth behind Elizabeth’s murder and deal with his feelings of guilt for abandoning his family and his estate for all those years. Meanwhile, the new heiress to the estate, Lady Caroline DeBarry has her sights on figuring out the mystery behind Robin, himself all while trying to keep her romantic feelings for him at bay.

Like I said, this was a really entertaining read. Was it perfect? No but very entertaining nonetheless.  You will need to enjoy vampire stories to enjoy this but I would probably say that of any paranormal book. I certainly enjoyed it and I would love to read more from this author in future! 4 stars.

Sol A. received the ebook for his honest opinion.

Excerpt Hawkesmoor: Novel of Vampire & Faerie by Anne Merino

From Chapter 1

He currently lived a dull life for a vampire Robin mused as he rode the old cage elevator up to the fifth floor. But its unremarkable qualities were what made it a private art piece.

It would have been easy to be like the handful of other vampires he had met over the last three hundred odd years; living out lives of world weary jet setters, flitting about in the guise of artists and rock singers. He too could be using his accumulated wealth to languish about trendy watering holes, drinking the chic dry and secretly pining for yesteryear when no one complained much when the odd serving wench or two went missing.

Instead he owned a colorful old five story building in Greenwich Village called The Bailey. The still elegant Bailey had always housed the theatre trade, from the days of Victorian music hall to vaudeville to Broadway. It remained a haven for retired stage personalities and young hopefuls. None of the Bailey’s roster of theatre folk knew Robin Dashwood for their landlord and he never revealed, even to the oldest performer, how he’d caught most of their acts in their heydays.

He loved the theatre and its people. Surrounding himself with their peculiar brand of humor and survival instincts kept him in touch with his human past. Since buying the Bailey in 1908, he had found it a fascinating way of measuring the passage of time.

Robin shoved open the elevator cage door with his elbow as he struggled to hang onto his unwieldy stack of student essays.

Robin unlocked his flat and unceremoniously dumped his students’ mid-term essays on the foyer table. He had little more than an hour to change clothes and dash over to the Art Institute.

Besides his history courses at NYU and his relationship with Kate, there wasn’t much else. He still saw a little theatre and worked on his fourth scholarly book for his editor at Mercury Press. Of course, about once a week he had to feed.

Most vampires fed more often for the sheer hedonism of it but in true aesthetic spirit, Robin had learned to quell the powerful urge to steal human blood for nearly seven days. He was literally starving by then so he usually killed, rather than deploying the more refined small drink favored by really skillful vampires.

He hunted among drug addicts, vagrants, pan handlers, pimps and hard core criminals. A particular favorite being drug dealers who could be counted on to be fairly clean of narcotics themselves and well-nourished in comparison to their clientele. It was fortunate that he was starving when he found one of his victims. It was the only way he could stomach the sour effects of their badly depleted blood.

Robin bent to pick up a note that had fallen from one of the student papers. It was a love struck message from Maria, one of his eleven o’clock lecture attendees. She had developed a major attachment to him and had just started to send him little notes full of promises to do wonderful things for and to him. It was far from the first time a student had fallen into such a trap.

Vampires were magnetic creatures. It was helpful in gaining quick confidences that led inevitably to feeding. And like most vampires, Robin Dashwood was beyond beautiful. He tried to hide his tall, imperially slender frame in baggy suits and his luminous green eyes behind round bookish tortoiseshell spectacles with fake lenses. He wore his gleaming chestnut-colored hair quite long in a severe blunt cut that nearly brushed his thin shoulders and hoped it would conceal his features. It only enhanced the flawless planes of his angular face and the cool pale of his skin.
