 Medellin Acapulco Cold

Description Medellin: Acapulco Cold ( Rick Fontain 3) by Bill Fortin

In March 1987, the CIA’s Operation Acapulco Cold took on the Medellín cartel. The journey would be dangerous. The alternative for not recovering the nuke would be too horrible to imagine.

A theft occurs as a result of President Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev’s treaty agreement in January 1986. Russian SS-20 medium-range missiles were removed from Eastern Europe and their nuclear MIRV packages removed. A shadow group inside the failing Russian government steals three of the nose-cone assembles.

A Russian named Geonov is charged with selling one of these devices to the Medellin cartel. The asking price was $40 million dollars in cash. Pablo Escobar did not even blink when he was offered one.  Operation Acapulco Cold is the detailed action taken by the CIA to address this life-altering situation.

Guest Review Medellin: Acapulco Cold (Rick Fontain 3) by Bill Fortin

Guest Review by Mark S.

‘Medellin: Acapulco Cold’ is the third book in Bill Fortin’s gripping series about CIA agent Rick Fontain. This installment in the series follows Rick as he tries to track down a stolen nuclear warhead through the United States, Mexico, Russia, Malaysia and other countries all over the world. This case ends up being one of the most complex and life-threatening of Rick’s career. Fortin’s writing seems to get better and better with every new novel that he releases. This book was no exception in that regard.

In ‘Medellin,’ Fortin’s writing is descriptive, compelling, snappy and witty. I found myself alternatively biting my nails and laughing out loud at Fontain’s quick one-liners many times while I was reading this novel. There were no parts of this book that dragged or bored me. It kept up a tense, action-packed plot throughout its entirety and kept me guessing about what was going to happen next till the very last page. These stories remind me a bit of a mixture of the James Bond films and ‘Die Hard’ with some Alex Cross thrown in for good measure. I love the descriptions of CIA operations and technology. All of those details seemed genuine and added to the story quite a bit. I didn’t feel lost or like I couldn’t understand what was happening at all.

I don’t want to give too much away and spoil the entire plot because it was too awesome a read for that. This was just the kind of thriller I love, the kind that has equal doses of tension and comedy as well as an international setting. I’m hoping that Rick Fontain has more work to do in the future and that there will be more books coming out in this series. This one gets 5 stars from me!

Twenty-One Steps of Courage by Sarah BatesThe winners of the book giveaway for Twenty-One Steps Of Courage are Laura T., Margie T, & Barry C.

Guest Post By Sarah Bates, Author of Twenty-One Steps Of Courage

When I started writing Twenty-One Steps of Courage, a novel about an Army troop desperate to become a Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown in Arlington National Cemetery, I also began sending packages to troops I found on www.anysoldier.com. I wanted to help make their lives more comfortable while they protected mine. I must have sent a hundred boxes, lining up at the post office with moms, grandmothers, and wives, myself not having a child or husband serving. A few letters of gratitude came my way, but the satisfaction I received from just sending the boxes was enough.

AnySoldier.com is an operation founded by the father of a young Soldier. The 501(c)3 organization exists solely due to the effort of volunteers. Please help this website whose benefactors number in the thousands. To make a contribution to their work, look for my “Sarah Bates” page at  http://www.anysoldierfundraiser.com

Special Offer Sarah Bates, Author of Twenty-One Steps Of Courage

Another way to help is by mailing a package to a deployed Soldier, Marine, or Sailor from www.anysoldier.com. If you do, email me a copy of the USPS receipt showing the recipient’s APO number along with your name and mailing address. To thank you I will send you an autographed copy of Twenty-One Steps of Courage at a special price of $14.61, which includes tax and shipping and can be paid for using PayPal through my email address jsbates2@sbcglobal.com, or by credit card or check.

The war isn’t over.  Helping these brave young men and women is still needed.

My Thoughts Twenty-One Steps of Courage by Sarah Bates

This is the second book I have read by Sarah Bates.  The first book was ‘The Lost Diaries of Elizabeth Cady Stanton’, a historical fiction book.  Historical fiction is my favorite fiction book genre but lately I have also been enjoying military fiction as well so, decided to read ‘Twenty-One Steps Of Courage’. I am so glad I did!

Rod Strong knew from a young age that he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps.  His father died in the Gulf War and was unable to fulfil his goal of joining the “Old Guard”.  This is where elite solders stand at the grave of the Unknown Solders in Arlington Cemetery.

Rod kept a list and calendar to keep on track for all of his military goals.  He wanted to do all of the training his father did before gaining entrance to his largest goal.  His brother was already in Afghanistan so their mother, Donna did not want Rod to join but there was no stopping him.  First he joined the army and completed basic training, then advanced infantry training, then Ranger school..Finally arriving for training at the ‘Old Guard”.

There were a lot of challenges along the way and both Rod and the reader didn’t think he would meet his ultimate goal.  Of course, I can’t tell you about the obstacles or the outcome, you will have to read it to find out.

It was clear from the very first page that Sarah Bates did a lot of research for this book and she explains a lot about it in the acknowledgements and the preface. The training Rod took seemed endless but not at all boring to the reader.  It felt like an adventure I was on with Rod.  When he was sore and tired, so was I.  I was so immersed in the book that I lost track of time.  I started reading it in the bath tub and over an hour later realized the water had gone cold.

‘Twenty-One Steps Of Courage’ is a fast paced and fascinating read.  I highly recommend it for everyone.  You do not need any military experience or even be that interested in the military to enjoy it.  It even has a bit of romance for those who enjoy that.  I also think it would be an excellent book for a book club!

Praise Twenty-One Steps of Courage by Sarah Bates

“Sarah Bates professes not to know much about the military yet she tells an inspiring story that captures the true essence of what the military is all about — love of country — unit esprit de corps — family values — personal courage. Every high school student, every parent and all of the politicians in this country should read this book.”- Lloyd N. Cosby, retired Tomb Guard (Alexandria, VA, US)

“I…read the book and I cried A LOT–it was very heartwarming and extremely interesting. When you described the part about him fighting and saving his brother–I felt I was there–a sure movie deal I hope.”- Detra Hoffman (Los Angeles, CA)

“The book covers a lot: what to expect in boot camp and after, the amount of control that the military has over your life once you join, and the responsiblities and hardships that your decision to join places on your loved ones. It also explores camaraderie between soldiers, the pride that attends possessing a strong sense of duty and of self, and the rewards of follow-through. Twenty-One Steps of Courage is a well balanced story about military life. Not too left or right, it’s a good read, one that I would recommend to anyone.”- Caradae Linore (San Diego, CA)

“The author did a wonderful job portraying the feelings of an 18-year-old man. Although I’ve seen the soldiers marching at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, I was unfamiliar with the training and precision involved. I didn’t understand a lot of the military acronyms but that didn’t stop me from enjoying this story.”-Midnight Reader, Amazon Review
