At the age of 14 and 11, brothers, Lucas and Grinder’s mother has left them and their alcoholic father. They never hear from her again.

Out of the blue a friend of their mother, Janice, contacts Lucas with the news that their mother has died. She asks them to come to Pittsburgh to take care of her effects, chief among them being Paul. Reluctantly, Lucas and Grinder head for Pittsburgh where they meet Janice and learn that Paul is their mother’s African grey parrot. Turns out that Paul has things to say that turn the brothers’ worlds upside down, especially regarding their mother.

This is a humorous look at matters of consequence—abandonment, alcoholism, grief and loss of a mother, living without clear answers, the relationship between brothers, separation and reconciliation and hope. It is also about a father who carries a piece of Jesus with him in a Ziploc baggie, a parrot who likes to get stoned, and a brother who cleans dead animals off the streets for a living.

David B. Seaburn has been a Presbyterian pastor of a small country church, an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Family Medicine at a leading university medical center, a pioneer in the field of Medical Family Therapy, and a prolific author.

Since 2005, Seaburn has published six novels. His newest, ‘Parrot Talk’, was released in May 2017 by Black Rose Writing. He also writes a blog for Psychology Today magazine, “Going Out Not Knowing.” Seaburn was a Finalist for the National Indie Excellence Awards in fiction for his novel, ‘Charlie No Face’ (2011). He is currently an instructor at Writers and Books in Rochester NY. Seaburn is married with two married daughters and two wonderful granddaughters. A third grandchild is on the way.

While innocent and naïve to peer pressure, Cory Carter is more self-aware than most going off to college. That is, until pledging a fraternity at Indiana University changes his outlook on life. Hazing leads to blood. Blood leads to regret. Regret leads to a transformation, making Cory into the biggest drug dealer on campus. For the first time in his life, he loses self-control. The power of that feeling drives Cory the rest of college, as he slowly descends into a new reality. 

Instead of buying the weekly weed he smokes, he decides to sell it himself. Instead of lying to his girlfriend, he decides to break up with her. By the time sophomore year comes around, Cory is buying enough weed to supply every fraternity on campus. Friends of friends start asking for cocaine and molly, but to Cory, if the drugs were on campus anyway, why not be the one selling it? All he has to do is pick up a duffle bag on Tuesday, drop off a few baggies on Wednesday, and count the money on Thursday. He has independence, he has power, he has his control back. That is, until a student overdoses and a detective comes knocking on Cory’s door, leaving Cory scrambling for answers. 

He realizes quickly he’s not just driving around town dropping off baggies to friends, he’s the local drug gang’s #1 distributor. And they won’t let him quit. While his friends prep for their biggest party weekend of the year, Cory’s looking down the barrel of a gun with a decision to make. Does he battle the drug gang for his freedom? Or can he outsmart the police and keep dealing?

Translated from the Dutch by Susan Ridder. THE INSTITUTE is a beautifully written boarding school novel about a boy who is searching for his identity and a sense of security. It is both hilarious and moving, and paints a frank picture of the 1970s, when ‘everything had to be tried out.’

Otto Iking is an outsider, at home as well as at the boarding school for the blind, but he is also an observer. Otto looks at the world around him with an unpitying sense of humour.

He observes the other children as well as the carers and teachers, who aim to prepare their pupils for the able-bodied world which ‘can be very tough.’

He discovers his feelings for Sonia, a fellow student, and he makes plans for a rescue mission to liberate hostages in the notorious Moluccan hijacking case in Bovensmilde.

But most of all, he wants to escape from the institution for the blind to a school for sighted children. Otto doesn’t want sympathy. He can see a future: working for the radio.

In short, a novel about a boy with remarkable powers of observation.

Vincent Bijlo is a Dutch stand-up comedian, columnist, musician and author. Many appearances on TV, radio and in the theatre have made him a household name in the Netherlands. He is a columnist for one of the Dutch national newspapers

Dutch publishing house De Arbeiderspers published his four novels: Het instituut in 1998, Achttienhoog in 2001, De woordvoerder in 2003 and De Ottomaanse herder in 2009.

In April 2017 Holland Park Press reissued his first novel in Dutch together with the English translation The Institute.

Vincent Bijlo was born blind.
