Best of Crimes by K.C. MaherBest of Crimes by K.C. Maher

Thanks to Katie Schnack of Smith Publicity, Inc., I am giving away one print copy of ‘The Best of Crimes’ by K.C. Maher.

Description Best of Crimes by K.C. Maher

One afternoon in a leafy New York City suburb, Walter Mitchell walks into the local police station and turns himself in for kidnapping thirteen-year-old Amanda Jonette, his daughter’s best friend. The police chief tells him to go home – no one wants to prosecute. But Walter refuses, and is finally arrested and charged.

This is a novel about a man who is faced with temptation but does not succumb; the extraordinary relationship that develops between he and his beloved, and the bond between these two bright, lost individuals as the painful inevitability of the end draws near.

This timely and provocative book will appeal to fans of Marilynn Robinson’s Lila and Sofka Zinovieff’s Putney.

About K.C. MaherBest of Crimes by K.C. Maher

K.C. MAHER grew up outside of Chicago and has been writing fiction all her adult life. Early on, she wrote short stories that were published in literary magazines such as Ascent, Black Warrior Review, and Confrontation. She also contributed flash fictions regularly to a UK ‘zine, The View From Here. Only recently has she noticed that her imagination runs to, and cultivates, the exception to the rule. Her husband, however, has always known this, as have lawyers considering her for jury duty. The Best of Crimes is her debut novel. She is mother to two children and lives in New York City.

Friends We Keep by Jane GreenFriends We Keep by Jane Green

Thanks to Tara O’Connor of Berkley, I am giving away one print copy of ‘Friends We Keep’ by Jane Green.

Description Friends We Keep by Jane Green

The Friends We Keep is the warm and wise new novel from Jane Green, New York Times bestselling author of The Sunshine Sisters and The Beach House

Evvie, Maggie, and Topher have known each other since university. Their friendship was something they swore would last forever. Now years have passed, the friends have drifted apart, and none of them ever found the lives they wanted – the lives they dreamed of when they were young and everything seemed possible.

Evvie starved herself to become a supermodel but derailed her career by sleeping with a married man.

Maggie married Ben, the boy she fell in love with at university, never imagining the heartbreak his drinking would cause.

Topher became a successful actor but the shame of a childhood secret shut him off from real intimacy.

By their thirtieth reunion, these old friends have lost touch with each other and with the people they dreamed of becoming. Together again, they have a second chance at happiness… until a dark secret is revealed that changes everything.

The Friends We Keep is about how despite disappointments we’ve had or mistakes we’ve made, it’s never too late to find a place to call home.

Praise Friends We Keep by Jane Green

American Corporate

Description American Corporate by Jeb Stewart Harrison

A playful, big-hearted tragicomedy in the Russo/Irving mold, American Corporate chronicles the misadventures of middle-aged Jack Sullivan and his family as they bounce across the country in search of gainful employment, domestic tranquility, and a few people they can trust.

It is a story that working parents past, present and future will see as part of their own: the triumphs, the tragedies, the innocent mistakes and the not-so-innocent mistakes, and above all the forgiveness that keeps families together to face another challenge.

My Thoughts American Corporate by Jeb Stewart Harrison

Whenever a book starts out with a guy getting skunked and makes me laugh at the beginning,I know I’m going to enjoy it. I don’t usually know that soon with humorous books if I will enjoy them that soon! There is something so funny about the protagonist of this book. Jack Sullivan is a normal, average, middle-aged guy with a wife, two kids, a really stupid dog and a house in suburbia that he can’t afford. He loses his job and is on the way to losing his house when he gets offered another job at a corporation in Indiana. Of course, for Southern Californian Jack, Indiana might as well be Guam for how remote and foreign it seems.

Jack is funny. He’s not terribly smart or nice and he’s certainly not very good at his job (no wonder he got fired) but he’s hilarious because his life is just so….crazy. The things that happen to him are so off the wall and entertaining that I couldn’t put the book down. I kept waiting to see what was going to happen next.

Aside from Jack, his wife, Carrie is the other main character. Carrie is also hilarious in a more ditzy and silly way. I found myself rooting for her even though she….uh, well, no spoilers but let’s just say she makes some interesting decisions about her personal life. I wanted her to succeed even though that might mean bad things for other characters I liked, too. She was strangely sweet and hopeful, an attribute that is hard to write in these types of books.

Jeb Stewart Harrison really created an excellent take on typical suburban life and working for a corporation here. It’s really a parody. If, after reading this review, you’re still on the fence about checking out the book: don’t be. It’s worth the read just for the character names and one-liners alone. It is full of humor with substance! I can easily give ‘American Corporate’ 5 stars.
