The Reclaimed Kingdom

Description Reclaimed Kingdom by Dana Claire

The Legend is true. The Fear is real.

Under the cruel ministrations of its Queen, the Kingdom of D’Land is in peril. With King Harrison away in foreign lands and neighboring Kingdoms unwilling to intervene, there is no one to protect the people from poverty, harsh punishment, and unreasonable rules of law – except for the Band of Brothers. Struggling with the death of her mother and the legendary Syphon powers she inherited, seventeen year old Dru wants nothing more than to escape her old life and join the motley crew of ruffians, pilfering from the rich to feed the poor and pay their taxes.

She’s able to do just that disguised as a lad, and even when her nature is discovered, nothing changes – except for the way her friend Hawkin treats her. But Dru’s new world is overturned when she and the Brothers seize the treasures of a Prince who threatens to reveal her identity. Together, Dru and her chosen family must find a way to reclaim her destiny and bring balance to the Kingdom. If not, there may be no hope left for anyone.

In the kingdom of D’Land, all is not well. The king, a man named Harrison has left the country on diplomatic business and, in his stead his wife, Ebbigal has gained control. But Ebbigal, in the way of all great evil queens, has begun lashing out against her people in truly terrible ways.

Ebbigal must be stopped, but who has the power to take on a queen? The answer to this question may just come from the least expected place. Deep in the forest of D’Land, where the peasants and poor folk struggle to get by, lives a band of merry men called The Band of Brothers. The Brothers like to rob from the rich and give to the poor, helping their destitute community and developing a bad reputation amongst the rich folk all at once.

However, one of the Brothers is not who they claim to be. A teenage girl named Dru, who pretends to be a boy in order to fight and live with the gang, is not only gifted with a supernatural ability that allows her to syphon from other people’s emotional states, but she is also connected to the king and queen in a way that she has not yet revealed to her brothers in arms.

After an incident with a prince from a neighboring land, Dru finds the new life that she has built beginning to unravel and she must decide if she is ready to fight for her people against Queen Ebbigal or if she will continue to hide away in the woods.

Five stars to this beautifully written YA fantasy that I simply couldn’t put down! I was so sad to get to the end of this book and so happy to discover that it is only the first in a series! I can’t wait to see what happens next!

The Runaways of Missing Lake

Description Runaways Of Missing Lake by Tanya Fyfe

Luke Houser and his friends enter their junior year at Missing Lake High School under extremely unusual circumstances after a tremendous forest fire kept the community on edge for months. The memory of the fire permeates all aspects of everyone’s lives, including those of the incredible secret dragon family who live up north. Luke makes a new canine friend through his step-mom’s veterinary clinic and Chase plays an important role despite not being one of the family’s beloved sled dogs.

The silver dragon, Zagros has some serious news for his young Dragoneer that will impact the entire dragon realm, particularly the young dragons, Helios and Cassiel. Luke has to process this information all while a crisis unfolds during English class. Luke has to make some serious choices that challenge the sometimes awkward sixteen-year-old but he cannot share them with anyone without risking the discovery of the magnificent dragons.

This is the fourth book in the Missing Lake series that follows a reluctantly intrepid young man’s journey into adulthood with his family, friends, dogs, cats and dragons by his side.

Praise Secrets Abound Missing Lake by Tanya Fyfe

“Winner of the Distinguished Favorite for Teens”- NYC Big Book Awards and the Independent Book Awards in 2018

“I so enjoy this series. With his anxieties about school, his love for his family’s sled dogs, and his adventures helping his stepmother in her veterinary clinic, Luke Houser is a very believable teenager in the mountainous wilds of Montana. Most of his problems are perfectly normal for a boy in his circumstances.
So his involvement with the local dragons feels totally natural.
The antics of the baby dragons once they hatch, especially the golden boy dragon, Helios (who is all boy too) are just as realistic feeling as those of Luke’s school friends. You get the feeling that dragons could be just as real as broken marriages and sick dogs. And you wonder how the dragons and dragoneers ever got by without good veterinary support for all these hundreds of years. No wonder they’re nearly extinct!”-Lora of Ettria

“While the third book in the series, I didn’t have a problem reading it without having read the previous two.  I enjoyed Luke’s interactions with the dragons and all they go through.  I was invested in these characters and what happened.  I found Luke and his family to be realistic as were all the problems (outside of the dragons) that he was having.  It is a clean book, which I love, and is just good.  I would let my young teens on up read this, I think they would enjoy it!”-Ashley’s Bookshelf

“The descriptions of North Dakota, Montana, and Vancouver are well written and help the reader sink into the story.  The characters and dialogue keep the pace going and makes for a book that is hard to put down. The ‘Secrets Abound Missing Lake’ is a memorable book that I plan to share with my grandchildren when they are a little older.  I also plan to read the first two books in the series and can hardly wait for book 4.  This book is a must read for those who like coming of age stories and dragons.  Actually animal lovers would love it as well.”-Sal, Bound 4 Escape

Guest Post by Tanya Fyfe, Author of Runaways of Missing Lake

My first memory of Dragons was Puff the Magic Dragon. What is your first memory of dragons and how have they stuck with you through the years?

My first real memory of dragons would be Puff the Magic Dragon, too! I wouldn’t say that it mesmerized me although I often had tears listening to the song as a little girl back in the seventies. I often formed attachments to inanimate objects whether they were real, like a stuffed animal, or a fictional dragon named Puff. It only made sense to cry because I cared so much about Jackie Paper and that rascal of a dragon by the sea.

Most people I meet assume I grew up with a plethora of animals because I am a veterinarian who writes books that center largely around a young man’s life with his animals. The truth, though, is that I didn’t have a single animal companion until I met my husband in my early twenties.

When I was growing up my brother was a competitive hockey player and my sister and I were competitive figure skaters. We lived in a smaller community in the Kootenay region so this meant we had to travel almost every weekend in the winters for training, games, events, test sessions, seminars and competitions. It would have been unfair to leave a dog or cat at home and I never felt like I missed out on anything. My large collection of stuffed animals all had clever, fun personalities and one or two of them often joined me on those weekend trips to other towns.

When I met my husband and his Golden Retriever, his Arabian stallion and his foals, sheep and geese on his farm in Creston, something clicked. Mitch, the Golden, taught me all about the bond we humans can create with living, breathing animals- not just inanimate objects or fictional characters in a song. Over the years we collected horses, dogs, cats, ferrets, more cats, and even a couple of cows. It only made sense when I finished my Bachelors of Science that I should apply to veterinary school.

And then it only made sense when I graduated that I would work in mixed practice and eventually make plans to open my own clinic in a tiny town in western Montana nestled in the beautiful Swan Range of the Rocky Mountains.  Along with the job came more dogs, more cats, guinea pigs and more ferrets. As a small town practitioner, I became attached to my clients’ pets and their stories as much as I was attached to our own menagerie. We held puppy parties, seminars, fund raisers for the local shelter and even an annual party, the Dog Days of Summer. My little clinic was a big thing for several years.

Sadly, though, for several reasons beyond my control, I had to make the choice to close my clinic doors in 2013. It still hurts my heart that I wasn’t able to keep things going and the decision was not made lightly. It did allow me to finally pursue the dream of writing, at least, and I turn to that to make it alright in my head. Initially, though, before the books, I felt a sense of loss and I allowed my mind to drift to different scenarios- such as, what would it take for me to open my clinic doors again?

The answer was simple. If someone brought me their pet dragon, I would be all in. I remember laughing out loud by myself and I clearly remember thinking I could make something out of that. In my books I still get to be that small-town veterinarian as I clearly live vicariously through Luke’s step-mom, Jackie.  (My readers who know me say they read Jackie’s dialogue in my voice in the books.) And I get to be eternally inspired by the magical, mystical dragon characters who have allowed me to continue to practice veterinary medicine and build bonds with my own pets and those of my clients’ as well. I get to share in their emergencies and procedures and loves and losses as much as I did before but without the overhead or business nightmares. I continue to reap the rewards of this great profession and still have a hand in educating my readers about unique aspects of my world such as keeping and training sled dogs and how things often go down when an animal needs a blood transfusion.

I wouldn’t be able to do all of this if it weren’t for the idea of medically helping take care of a real-life, modern day dragon and I do believe my concern for Jackie and Puff way back when had something to do with all of that.

Wakanda Files by Troy BenjaminWakanda Files by Troy Benjamin

Thanks to Steve Roth of Quarto Publishing Group, I am giving away one print copy of ‘A Mother’s Grace’ by Michelle Moore.

Description Wakanda Files by Troy Benjamin

An in-world book from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Wakanda Files—compiled by request of Shuri (Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War) as part of her quest to improve the future for all people—is a collection of papers, articles, blueprints, and notes amassed throughout history by Wakanda’s War Dogs. In a nod to Wakandan technology, the pages of the book have a printed layer of UV ink with content that is visible only under the accompanying Kimoyo bead–shaped UV light.

Within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Wakanda has been on the forefront of what is technologically possible. Their ability to stay ahead of the rest of the world is second only to their ability to keep themselves hidden. As the architect behind many of Wakanda’s great advancements, Shuri is constantly seeking ways to improve what has come before. To aid in her search, she researches the past for context, reference, and inspiration by compiling The Wakanda Files.

Organized into areas of study, including human enhancement, transportation, weapons, artificial intelligence, and more, The Wakanda Files trace the world’s technological achievements from the era of Howard Stark and early Hydra studies to modern discoveries in quantum tunneling and nanotechnology, weaving together the stories, personalities, and technology that are the fabric of the MCU.
