Driving Lessons by Joseph Boyden

Last week John of The Book Mine Set did a review and discussed war stories.  He mentioned Joseph Boyden and I commented that I read ‘Three Day Road’ but I hadn’t read any of Boyden’s short stories.  I decided to remedy that this week.
I read Joseph Boyden’s short story, Driving Lessons.‘  The unknown narrator is in a car with his girlfriend, Amanda, who is driving.  She skids to a stop to avoid hitting a man struggling with “dropped groceries, something large.”  No, it’s a teen and “it’s not groceries but another young man.”
What happens next, packs an emotional punch but I don’t want to give away a spoiler.  Later, the same narrator, tells us about an experience with a different girlfriend, in the past.
It appears that Boyden likes to pack a wallop in his short stories as much as he does in his novels.  I certainly recommend this story and plan to read more of his shorts.  By the way, if you havn’t read ‘Three Day Road’, what are you waiting for?  Boyden’s writing leaps from the page and takes hold of his reader from page one.

A couple of week ago, Margot of Joyfully Retired reviewed this short story.  It sounded like a fun short so I decided to read it myself.
The story opens with a husband and wife playing Scrabble together.  The opening sentence is, “It’s a hot day and I hate my wife.”  That sets the tone for the story.
The game is really close and the entire time they are playing it the husband lets us know that he hates his wife so much the he wishes her dead.  Then by chance he plays the word “ZAPS” and his wife gets a static shock from the air conditioning unit.  Of course, you can see where this is going, right?  Except there is a twist at the end.

The majority of the reading I do is usually deep and depressing at times.  It is what I prefer however, it is nice to read something lighter to break it up a bit.  This story fit the bill.  The story is only three pages long but it is funny and refreshing.  Give your self a little fun and read it.  It appears in a few place on the world wide web, here one of them.

Quite awhile ago, someone gave me the link to the short story, Friendly Fire by Tessa Hadley.  You c an read it for free, here.  I finally got around to reading it this weekend.
Friendly Fire is about a middle-aged woman, Shelly who took a cleaning job to earn some extra money.  Her friend, Pam owned a cleaning business and needed some help to do a “scrub-off”, an extra detailed clean.
There is absolutly no plot to this story but it has it’s moments here and there.  For instance, we learn that Shelly has a son in the British Army, over in Afghanistan.  We also learn a little bit about Shelly’s husband.
At only 4 pages in length, this story reads quickly however, with no plot, there really wasn’t enough for me to be able to enjoy this story.  I can’t recommend this one.
