Description Muskrat Ramble by Mim Eichmann

Seamlessly threaded into the emerging hot jazz music scene that captured the hearts of music lovers in 1913 New Orleans, are the themes of the tightening Jim Crow era, World War I and its aftermath of economic ills, political upheavals and epidemics, and the choices, heartbreaks and ultimate decisions of women of all races… at its heart, however, “Muskrat Ramble” is the saga of a young woman’s unwavering devotion to the child she was forced to abandon at birth. The much-anticipated sequel to “A Sparrow Alone”!

My Thoughts Muskrat Ramble by Mim Eichmann

‘Muskrat Ramble’ is the continuation of the story about Hannah Owens Barrington in the first book, ‘A Sparrow Alone’.  You can read my thoughts on book 1 here. It picks up her story in 1913 after the school she teaches African American children, closes in Kansas.  She moves with her “daughter,” Alice, to New Orleans. She hopes to re-connect with her birth daughter, Emma and to find a job.

She does get to re-connect with Emma, who is now 13 years old.  Note, Emma does not know that Hannah is her mother. Emma aspires to be a Jazz singer and is friends with Kid Ory the jazz trombonist.

Hannah also finds a variety of jobs including working in a cigar factory and seamstress work for an opera house.

The backdrop of the book is the Jazz Age in all it’s glory and pitfalls, especially racism. I love the part Kid Ory plays in the story as he was a real-life jazz performer.  There were also references to Louis Armstrong.  I especially love the Jazz age part of the story, it was like a character, itself.

I also loved how Hannah evolved as she aged.  I would love to write more about that but don’t want to risk spoilers.

If you are an historical fiction lover, like myself, you should read ‘Muskrat Ramble’.  Be sure to read ‘A Sparrow Alone’ first.  This is a rich historical two book series that is well developed and researched.  The character come alive in a way that you feel you are there, seeing their lives unfold first hand. These are unforgettable characters that I will not forget! 5 stars!

I received the ebook for my honest opinion.

Throughout her life, Ms. Eichmann has always been captivated by the writings, diaries and journals of late 19th century women, and how so many of these trailblazing women ultimately set the stage for women’s rights during the era’s economic, cultural and political upheavals. She’s now put pen to paper and the historical fiction novel she’s been passionately researching, its rich synopsis gradually evolving over many years, has finally become a reality.  Her debut novel “A Sparrow Alone” was published on April 15, 2020 and the novel’s sequel, “Muskrat Ramble” March 23, 2021.

Finding Napoleon by Margaret RodenbergFinding Napoleon by Margaret Rodenberg

Thanks to Hanna Lindsley of SparkPoint, I am giving away one print copy of ‘Finding Napoleon’ by Margaret Rodenberg.

Description Finding Napoleon by Margaret Rodenberg

With its delightful adaptation of Napoleon Bonaparte’s real attempt to write a novel, Finding Napoleon offers a fresh take on Europe’s most powerful man after he’s lost everything. A forgotten woman of history–Napoleon’s last love, the audacious Albine de Montholon–narrates their tale of intrigue, passion, and betrayal.

After the defeated Emperor Napoleon goes into exile on tiny St. Helena Island in the remote South Atlantic, he and his lover, Albine de Montholon, plot to escape and rescue his young son. Banding together African slaves, British sympathizers, a Jewish merchant, a Corsican rogue, and French followers, they confront British opposition–as well as treachery within their own ranks–with sometimes subtle, sometimes bold, but always desperate action.

When Napoleon and Albine break faith with one another, ambition and Albine’s husband threaten their reconciliation. To succeed, Napoleon must learn whom to trust. To survive, Albine must decide whom to betray.

Two hundred years after Napoleon’s death, this elegant, richly researched novel reveals a relationship history conceals.

Praise Finding Napoleon by Margaret Rodenberg

“Moving compassion, humor and wit. Highly recommended!”-Sandra Gulland, Author of The Josephine B. Trilogy

“In a league of its own…writing is beautiful and poignant.”-Allison Pataki, NYT Best-selling Author of Historical Fiction

“Finding Napoleon is a fascinating look at Napoleon as a writer of romance, a tender father, and a mature lover examining happier times amid the trials of his life in St. Helena–a side to him not often explored, and one I found completely enrapturing. His forgotten lover, Albine de Montholon, adds an intriguing dimension. Rodenberg’s sense of revolutionary culture and period detail sparkle and her storytelling is truly absorbing. A winner!”-Heather Webb, coauthor of Ribbons of Scarlet and author of Becoming Josephine and Rodin’s Lover

A Child Lost

Description Child Lost by Michelle Cox

A spiritualist, an insane asylum, a lost little girl . . .

When Clive, anxious to distract a depressed Henrietta, begs Sergeant Frank Davis for a case, he is assigned to investigating a seemingly boring affair: a spiritualist woman operating in an abandoned schoolhouse on the edge of town who is suspected of robbing people of their valuables. What begins as an open and shut case becomes more complicated, however, when Henrietta—much to Clive’s dismay—begins to believe the spiritualist’s strange ramblings.

Meanwhile, Elsie implores Clive and Henrietta to help her and the object of her budding love, Gunther, locate the whereabouts of one Liesel Klinkhammer, the German woman Gunther has traveled to America to find and the mother of the little girl, Anna, whom he has brought along with him. The search leads them to Dunning Asylum, where they discover some terrible truths about Liesel. When the child, Anna, is herself mistakenly admitted to the asylum after an epileptic fit, Clive and Henrietta return to Dunning to retrieve her. This time, however, Henrietta begins to suspect that something darker may be happening. When Clive doesn’t believe her, she decides to take matters into her own hands . . . with horrifying results.

My Thoughts Child Lost by Michelle Cox

Sometimes there is a fine line between simply walking away and possibly going missing. Liesal Klinkhammer leaves a German boarding house in the 1930’s on a quest to find a better life in America. Surprising everyone, she also leaves behind her little daughter, Anna. Anna is soon brought to America by the boarding house owner’s son, Gunther, in order to find her mother, but Liesal left no clues to her whereabouts and the trail has gone very cold.

Enter Clive and Henrietta Howard, a husband-and-wife detective duo who take on the case after being asked by Henrietta’s sister, Elsie. Elsie, has recently begun a budding romance with Gunther.

This being the fifth book in the series, Clive and Henrietta are well used to solving crimes that others have deemed unsolvable, but this case leaves even them scrambling for leads and following enigmatic clues. And, after suffering a recent tragedy of their own, will the couple be able to find Liesal and keep their marriage intact? You’ll have to read ‘A Child Lost’ yourself to find out!

This was a superb addition to Michelle Cox’s ‘Clive and Henrietta Howard’ series and a beautifully written historical piece. The level of detail and world building that Cox employs here is stunning. I felt fully immersed in the story from page one and I didn’t want it to end! It is my favorite book in the series.

If you pick up this book, you feel as though you are reaching back in time to a 1930’s Chicago, where the romance is sizzling, the mysteries are unpredictable and justice is served with a side of noir. Joining Clive and Henrietta on this ride is a must for fans of detective mysteries and historical romances. The twists and turns will be enough to keep you guessing until the very last page.

Each book in this series can be read on there own however, they are even better reading them in order to get all of the back story.  This is a series not to be missed! I can hardly wait for the next book in the series!

About Michelle CoxChild Lost by Michelle Cox

Michelle Cox is the author of the multiple award-winning Henrietta and Inspector Howard series as well as Novel Notes of Local Lore, a weekly blog dedicated to Chicago’s forgotten residents. She suspects she may have once lived in the 1930s and, having yet to discover a handy time machine lying around, has resorted to writing about the era as a way of getting herself back there. (Her books have been praised by Kirkus, Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, Booklist, and many others, so she might be on to something.)

Unbeknownst to most, Cox hoards board games she doesn’t have time to play and is, not surprisingly, addicted to period dramas and big band music. Also, marmalade.
