Loving Eleanor by Susan Wittig AlbertLoving Eleanor by Susan Wittig Albert

There are some public figures that I have admired all my life and Eleanor Roosevelt is one of them.  It doesn’t matter that she had already past a year before I was born.  I admire her for all that she did for the U.S. and especially did to progress women’s rights!

‘Loving Eleanor’ is a fictionalized account of Eleanor Roosevelt and the female reporter, Lorena Hickok (nick name: Hick)  assigned to  cover her during FDR’s run for the presidency.   Yes, it covers the affair the two females had with each other and their love letters but in a tasteful way.  It also showed how much Eleanor grew into her role as first lady, a role that she did not want but finally embraced.

Lorena Hickok, one of few female reporters of the time, was assigned to cover the 1928 election. She primarily covered Eleanor Roosevelt and they grew a fast rapport and friendship that became romantic, for a time.  Hick is the narrator and seems to want to make sure people know about their relationship and the love she had for Eleanor.

There are a lot of details about the Great Depression and the era of FDR’s presidency.   It also talked about FDR’s love interests.  Yes, they both had affairs, plural.  However, his were mostly accepted while Eleanor’s were not.  That double standard is still alive today.

In the pages, we also get to know Hick, who I had heard of but didn’t know much about her other than she was a female reporter.  The book is writing like an autobiography by Hick and I really enjoyed getting to know her and researching what was true and what was fiction.  From my research, it looks like Susan Wittig Albert stuck mostly with the facts and filled in the back story to make it entertaining.

The book dragged in a couple places for me but overall I really enjoyed it and it compelled me to find out more.  I was thrilled to see some further reading recommendations at the end and the author note also talked about what was fact and what was fiction. I always look for an author’s note at the end of historical fiction.  It make a historical fiction novel more credible to me.  I highly recommend ‘Loving Eleanor’ to historical fiction lovers!

Mata Hari's Last Dance by Michelle MoranMata Hari’s Last Dance by Michelle Moran

My Thoughts on Mata Hari’s Last Dance by Michelle Moran

It is 1904 when Margaretha Zelle MacLeod leaves her abusive husband in Java and becomes the famous Mata Hari in France.  She had to leave her daughter, Non behind due to threats from her husband and has always regretted that.

As Mata Hari becomes more and more famous she takes up many different lovers and enlists a couple of them to help her get her daughter back.  After careful planning an attempt was made.

During World War I Mata Hari travel over a good part of Europe seeking information to help France in the war effort.  However, her adventures were twisted and when she returned to France, she was arrested and accused of being a double agent for both Germany and France.

Michelle Moran paints a vivid picture of the life, rise, and fall of the famous Mata Hari.  At times I felt like I was along for the ride but also at times I felt a bit left out. The parts I enjoyed most was the flash backs of her childhood and younger adult years.  I grew sympathetic for all she had been through and was glad that she got to experience a better life, for awhile. Even though that better life was her eventual undoing.

The end seemed a bit rushed to me but perhaps the real end of Mata Hari was rushed in real life.

I have many favorite historical fiction authors but when Michelle Moran puts out a new title, I always make it a priority she is in my top 2!  Though I am not giving Mata Hari a five star rating, I still highly recommend it for historical fiction lovers.  Michelle Moran is still at the top of her writing career and I can’t wait to see where she takes us next!

Marlene by C. W. GortnerMarlene by C. W. Gortner

It’s no secret that I am a fan of C. W. Gortner, so when I saw the change to grab a ebook for review of his latest historical fiction, I jumped. This time Gortner’s focus is on the very famous Marlene Dietrich ( December 27, 1901-May 6, 1992).

Marlene Dietrich was born and raised in Germany.  She studied violin under pressure from her mother but really wanted to be an actress.  After being told at the music conservatory by the same music teacher she had an affair with, that she wasn’t good enough to play professionally, she gave up lessons.  However, for a short while she does play for a burlesque company, until she was fired.  She played fine but she was the only woman in the orchestra and her colleagues complained that her legs were driving them crazy.

Soon she moves in with a new lover, this time, a female.  With the encouragement of her Uncle’s mistress and her new lover, she starts taking acting lesions.  She also gets dancing parts in cabarets.  She soon starts getting bit acting parts in plays too.  Then she meets her future husband, Rudi, who works in the film industry and gets her a screen test.  Eventually she gets her first movie part.  Her and Rudi also have a daughter together but soon Marlene is invited to Hollywood and signs a contract.  This is just as things are heating up in Germany and the stage is being set for World War II.  She is glad to get out of there!

Soon she also gets her husband, their daughter, and Rudi’s mistress out of Germany and moves them to France and then once that is no longer safe, to the U.S.

In the mean time, her movie career is taking off and she has supporting and lead roles with famous actors.  She has affairs with some of the leading men, including Gary Cooper, John Wayne, and Cary Grant.  At the same time, Hitler is working hard to lure her back to Germany and even threatens her remaining family living in Germany.  What does she do? She joins the U.S.O and performs for U.S. soldiers, of course! She later meets General George Patton and has a brief affair with him but really she wants him to get her into Germany at the war’s end, so she can check on her family. She is devastated when she sees the state of the country she grew up in.

This book is told in chronological order.  At times, I wanted her teenage and young adult years to move at a faster pace but once her career started, the book really picked up.  I am not one to judge people by who they sleep with, I judge them on their accomplishments and Marlene Dietrich accomplishes a lot.  She not only builds a career for herself but she braves war zones to comfort solders fighting for her new country.  She is am inspiration!

I highly recommend ‘Marlene’ to historical fiction fans.  Although this is a fictionalized account, if is well researched and I recommend it to those who enjoy biographies of famous people as well.
