Description Keep Saying Their Names by Simon Stranger

Inspired by historical events and by personal history, a shattering, exquisite double portrait of a Norwegian family savaged by World War II and of a man devoted to crimes against humanity, conjoined by an actual house of horrors they both call home.

Once the Germans conquer Norway in 1940, they quickly discover a tremendous native asset: Henry Oliver Rinnan, a double agent so cruel and manipulative that he would become notorious as one of Norway’s vilest traitors, second only to Quisling himself. In 1941, Rinnan and his gang set up headquarters in an unspectacular suburban house and transformed the cellar into a makeshift torture and death chamber reserved for Norwegian resisters. In the war’s aftermath, this house became home to a Jewish-Norwegian couple still reeling from trauma. Here their two young daughters spend a happy childhood in the very same rooms where, only a few years before, some of the most heinous acts of the occupation had been committed.

Many decades later, Simon Stranger married the daughter of one of those girls, and, learning the history of her family, soon realized that their story could not be told without including Rinnan’s, provoking a plague of questions: What turned a bashful shoemaker’s son into this despised criminal? How could a Jewish family have chosen to move into that house? And how could Stranger himself explain to his twenty-first century son this virtually inconceivable history, and what it means to be Jewish? He wrestles with these essential questions in this stunning novel, seamlessly melding fact and fiction, guiding us through five generations’ worth of history, at once intimate and global, seeking to reveal how evil is born in some and courage in others.

A tremendous contribution to the literature of the Second World War–focused tightly and specifically on a previously unseen corner of it–Keep Saying Their Names reveals core facets of the human psyche. This is an intimate, unforgettable account that compels us to confront the darkness of the past honestly and genuinely in order to build a better future for those we love.

Praise Keep Saying Their Names by Simon Stranger

“Keep Saying Their Names is a deep, yet gentle, exploration of how we become who we are, and how our individual decisions can impact the lives of others. Through the vivid scenes he creates, Stranger allows us to get closer to understanding how war creeps into every fabric of our lives, how it can possess places, buildings, objects, people. Ultimately, Stranger’s masterful book is a pledge for taking individual responsibility: by remembering those who are no longer here, by keeping their stories alive, and by recognizing that we are made of our past. Reading this book is a deeply emotional experience, especially during a time of reemerging anti-Semitism. Its humaneness leaves you hopeful.” —Nora Krug, author of Belonging: A German Reckons with History and Home

“Keep Saying Their Names is a cut diamond of a book.  Both brutal and tender, it drills toward its dark truths with hypnotic force while glimmering with the bright hope that we all might be redeemed.” —Joshua Furst, author of Revolutionaries

“Haunting . . . Stranger succeeds in shining a light of hope by keeping the memory of the dead alive. This tale of triumph and compassion is a testament to courage in the face of the darkest evil.” —Publishers Weekly

Description Sparrow Alone by Mim Eichmann

1890s. Colorado. Following her mother’s sudden death, thirteen-year-old Hannah Owens is hired as domestic help by a wealthy doctor’s family in Colorado Springs. When the doctor declares bankruptcy and abandons his family to finance his mistress Pearl DeVere’s brothel, Hannah is thrown into a world of gold mining bonanzas and busts, rampant prostitution and the economic, political and cultural upheavals of the era.

Two of Cripple Creek’s most colorful historic characters, Winfield Scott Stratton, eccentric owner of the richest gold mine in Cripple Creek, and Pearl DeVere, the beautiful madam of The Old Homestead come to life as this old-fashioned, coming-of-age saga unfolds, a tribute to the women who set the stage for women’s rights.

My Thoughts Sparrow Alone by Mim Eichmann

In 1890’s Colorado, 13 year old Hannah Owens mother has just died.  Her father is useless and just spews scripture, as always.  So Mrs. Hughes takes her home with her to learn to be a servant for herself and wealthy doctor husband. It seems kind of Mrs. Hughes at the time but she is not a kind woman as the welts and scars on Hannah can attest to.

After Dr. Hughes abandons his family for his mistress, Pearl DeVere, Mrs. Hughes throws Hannah and the cook, Zuma out.  They end up living on the high class brothel finances by Dr. Hughes and run by Pearl.  They take in the brothel’s laundry and darning to be able to live.  Hannah is also hired twice to sing on special occasions at the brothel.  However, that life falls apart too and Zuma is sent to jail for something she did not do.  Hannah is now completely alone. Enter Winfield Scott to save her or does he just want a piece of her?

Hannah is thrown from the frying pan and into the fire many times throughout this novel.  How will she survive?   It is clear that Mim Eichmann did her research.  She captured the period and place well.  Her characters popped off the page and kidnapped me into their world.  Even though I finished reading, they still have me and won’t let go.  I just can’t get them out of my head. Luckily, I found out at the end that there is a sequel coming next year. The wait will be excruciating.  I highly recommend ‘A Sparrow Alone’ to historical fiction lovers and give it 5 stars.

I received the ebook from the author for my honest review.

A desire to become involved again in the folk music world brought about the creation of her acoustic quartet Trillium www.trilliumtheband.com now in its 15th year, a folk band well known for its eclectic repertoire, that performs throughout the Midwest and has also released four cds. She’s also written the lyrics and music and recorded two award-winning original children’s cds. Throughout her life, Ms. Eichmann has always been captivated by the writings, diaries and journals of late 19th century women, and how so many of these trailblazing women ultimately set the stage for women’s rights during the era’s economic, cultural and political upheavals. She’s now put pen to paper and the historical fiction novel she’s been passionately researching, its rich synopsis gradually evolving over many years, has finally become a reality.  Her debut novel “A Sparrow Alone” will be published by Living Springs Publishers, Centennial, CO on April 15, 2020 and the novel’s sequel, “Muskrat Ramble” in Spring 2021.

Place Called Jubilee

Description Place Called Jubilee by Timothy J. Garrett

Deception, witchcraft, and the secrets of a long-dead former slave churn the life of ambitious young clergyman Coleman Hightower – even as fear, bombings, and riots rock the nation.

Historical novel A PLACE CALLED JUBILEE tells Coleman’s story as he leaves his mountain home and arrives in Washington D.C. in 1961 as the Civil Rights movement explodes across America. Coleman’s plans for a prestigious life are torn apart by his forbidden longing for beautiful and fiery activist Rosalee.

His search for meaning turns into a desperate journey that takes him and the woman of his dreams all the way to Jubilee, Alabama – a place where intrigue, betrayal, and murder combine to make Coleman wonder if he will win Rosalee’s love or even leave the tiny town alive.

My Thoughts Place Called Jubilee by Timothy J. Garrett

Coleman Hightower is a clergyman with a bright future ahead of him.  He has a great mentor and leader in the church he works and lives in.  Dr. Browning is well respected all over New York.

‘A Place Called Jubilee opens with Coleman attending JFK’s inauguration.  When walking home he is thinking to himself and ends up in the wrong neighborhood and is beaten and left for dead.  The young black men did not take too kindly to a young white man wondering onto their turf.  Luckily a young black woman, Rosalee finds him and brings him to the boarding home where she lives and tends to his wounds.  Coleman falls for her. He goes back to the church but can’t keep his mind off of her and ends up going to a civil rights meeting in hopes of seeing her.

He knows that his mentor would not agree with his pursuing a black woman, he does not agree with the “mixing of races” but Dr. Browning does find out and gives him an ultimatum. What should Coleman do?  He doesn’t want to lose his job and go back to the dirt poor life he lived as a child.

This is a story about a young white man who has a political awakening.  He eventually decides to travel south to sit in and the lunch counter and also try to win over the woman he falls in love with.  She doesn’t think it would work and constantly pushes him away.  At the same time, their lives become endangered and they end up in a small mysterious town call Jubilee.  While there, they have a mystery to solve.  Will they solve the mystery and up together?  My lips are sealed.

This is a civil rights historical fiction unlike any I have read and I have read a lot.  Just wait until you read it and get to the part about Jubilee and you will know why it’s so unique.  I loved the characters, especially the quirky ones in Jubilee.  There was a twist with Dr. Browning I did not see coming.  I love when a book catches me off guard!  Timothy J. Garrett does that and so much more.  He captures the time and landscape of the era expertly while keeping the reader entertained and wanting more.  I read a lot in the bathtub and the water went cold while reading this book!  It’s hard to believe this is his first book!  I hope he keeps on writing.  I do think a sequel would be in order.  I would love to spend more time with Coleman and Rosalee and follow them on more civil rights adventures!  I highly recommend ‘A Place Called Jubilee’ and give it 5 stars.
