Description Song Girl by Keith Hirshland

Detective Marc Allen is ready to leave the Raleigh, North Carolina, Police Department. Two murders that happened on his watch have apparently been solved thanks to a suicide note confession written by a distraught father. But Allen isn’t buying it. He’s convinced that the man’s adopted daughter, Teri Hickox, is the one responsible for the heinous crimes. With his personal life a muddle and his professional career unsettled he decides the best thing for him is a change of scenery.

The detective, now in Colorado Springs, is working new cases and making new friends. One of those friends is Hannah Hunt who, after suffering a freak accident, finds herself only able to speak in song titles. Another is a mysterious drifter who lives out of an old Dodge van and goes by “the champ”. But as Allen builds a new future, events unfold showing him that he can’t escape his past.

Song Girl is…

Part sequel to The Flower Girl Murder

Part stand-alone mystery

All entertaining

My Thoughts Song Girl by Keith Hirshland

Guest Review by Mark.

‘Song Girl: A Mystery in Two Verses,’ tells the kind of story that you just don’t see often enough. This story is about several different characters, a down-on-his-luck detective, the murderess who has thwarted both him and justice, a homeless man with a suspicious background and a brother who only wants the best for his adopted sister.

All of these character’s storylines are intricately combined, and it isn’t until the end of the novel that the reader turns around and realizes exactly how all of the stories are going to come together.

Hirshland’s writing is a great example of using the different perspectives of characters to create a mystery from several angles.

You’ve got the detective, Marc Allen, the do-gooder who is disappointed in his inability to convince his superiors to continue working a double murder that he feels was not properly solved. Teri Hickox, the woman who actually committed the crimes—and framed her father for them. Reg Byrd, a former biker gang member who left town after shooting a cop and has now returned in order to reconnect with his family, but who has to live under an assumed name. And finally, Rampart Haynes, a young former boxing champ whose sister suffers a freak accident that leaves her unable to communicate with anything but song titles.

These are four very disparate perspectives that Hirshland weaves intricately together in a way that creates a very robust and stunning narrative. Marc Allen, in particular, was a great character that I would love to read more books about. I found his parts of the book to be my favorite, although I have to confess I really enjoyed Teri’s evil perspective as well.

‘Song Girl’ is just the type of book that any mystery-lover would enjoy, and definitely one to be added to your TBR list immediately!

5/5

AND HE THOUGHT BEING IN THE MARINES WAS TOUGH …

After twenty-four years, Special Forces legend Josh Kavanagh has retired from the military. But now that he’s home, he’s finding that everyone has a different understanding of his motivations, and realizes that there are some wounds no amount of time can heal.

Josh’s traumatized sister, Suki, thinks her big brother is a hero and has come home to punish her rapist, the youngest son of a ruthless, crooked billionaire who lives to get revenge on anyone he sees as a threat to his family, wealth, and power.

Josh’s childhood sweetheart, Rachel, hopes he’s returning for her—the fierce girl he left behind when he joined the military. But Rachel doesn’t know about Mia, the woman in France …

And Josh isn’t coming home alone. The Oath Group, an elite force of private military contractors, is already in Montana waiting for their commander to arrive.

The DOD and CIA don’t want President Trump to know they hired Josh’s Oath Group to examine dangerous white supremacist militias that are threatening the U.S. Constitution. That covert black-ops military operation is starting in Idaho and Montana. Josh and his teams have to get the job done while preserving their anonymity—and their lives.

NOTE: this novel grew out of a prompt in a VA Vet Center PTSD support group that focuses on writing as a form of therapy. Everyone in that group was a combat veteran that included Marines, Special Forces, medics, combat photographers, et al.  The combat vets in that group heard the entire novel as it was written chapter-by-chapter, starting in March 2018.

Review Patriot Oath by Lloyd Lofthouse

Guest Review by Mark S.

‘The Patriot Oath,’ by Lloyd Lofthouse is equal parts action packed and poignant with a little bit of romance mixed in.

Career Marine Josh Kavanagh left home to join the service 24 years earlier. At the start of the book, he returns to his family’s farm in Montana with the intention of helping his sister through the aftermath of her rape.

Josh’s sister, Suki was attacked by a local rich kid, who used his father’s money to evade punishment by the court, and Josh intends to give the young man his comeuppance in the way only a decorated Marine can. However, before he can solve this problem, Josh must deal with the hurt and pain that he caused by leaving his family and his teenage girlfriend, Rachel.

Josh soon discovers that the town that he left almost a quarter century earlier has changed in a lot of big ways, and that he may not be able to right the wrongs that he caused all those years ago. On top of all this, a group of private military contractors called ‘The Oath Group’ has traveled with Josh and is waiting for him to command them.

There is something for every reader in this roller coaster ride of a novel. Whether you are a fan of military stories, special ops stories, romance (without a happily ever after), or family drama, ‘The Patriot Oath,’ has it all!

Lofthouse writes all of the characters in this novel as fascinating and relatable, even as they (and especially Josh) are doing some pretty incredible things. Readers could learn a lot from this novel, not just about military operations but about writing in general.

This is a familiar story with a fresh, new take and one that will be enjoyed by fiction readers from all walks of life. Pick this one up, you won’t regret it! It deserves all 5 stars!

I received the Kindle version for my honest opinion.

Description Grenade Bouquets by Lee Matthew Goldberg

I had stars in my eyes and I couldn’t see around them…

The year is 1995 and my parents have finally allowed me to take the summer to tour in a VW van across the country with my boyfriend Evan and our band. Yes, my dream to be a singer became reality. Even with Clarissa, Evan’s jealous ex-girlfriend, as the lead singer, it’s my presence on stage that led us to a major record deal. There are moments you’ll always remember in life, but I can’t imagine anything more cool than hearing your song on the radio for the first time.

But being a Rockstar isn’t as easy as it sounds. Using alcohol and drugs as coping mechanisms, nothing but tension surrounded me, hurting my still blossoming relationship, and continued grieving over my sister’s death.

A love letter to the nineties and a journey of a girl becoming a woman, Grenade Bouquets charts the rollercoaster ride of a band primed to explode on the scene, as long as they keep from actually exploding.

Review Grenade Bouquets by Lee Matthew Goldberg

Guest Review by Mark S.

With no one but her hero, Kurt Cobain to guide her, Nico sets out on a cross country tour with her band, the Grenade Bouquets, seeking fame, fortune and good pizza.

Nico is seventeen, a strange and tumultuous time for a young woman. Added to that, she recently lost her sister and hasn’t really dealt with the magnitude of that loss. But when the band that she is a part of decides to go on tour, Nico can’t say no. Especially since her new boyfriend, Evan is in the band as well. Driving around the country in a beat up VW, Nico learns about the perils of fame, the difficulties of adult relationships and just how much her willpower can take.

Every beat of ‘Grenade Bouquets’ is magical. Lee Matthew Goldberg perfectly encapsulates the essence of the 90’s, from the music, to the fashion and the lack of parental supervision. Nico is a strong, interesting character and I really appreciated how often she is willing to stand up for herself, especially against the lead singer of the band, a mean girl named Clarissa.

Although Nico’s hero is Kurt Cobain, I think that she is determined not to end up the same way that he did. But that determination is tested when the Grenade Bouquets begin to see some attention from record labels, and things like partying all night and drugs begin to come into the picture.

This book could be thought of as a coming-of-age story with a twist– the toll that fame can take on a mind that is still developing. More than anything, I came out of this book with the impression that it was a great look at the inner thoughts of a teenage girl during a particularly strange time in America. Five lyrical stars for this one!
