Review Dark River by Avery Jenkins

Guest Review by Mark S.

“You know a little about everything, forget nothing anyone has said to you, can look at a piece of jade and know it’s age, where it was carved, by whom, and what the artist’s second child was named.”

What an interesting and enveloping novel! I felt like I was brought into to the author’s universe right from the first page and I kept wanting more.  Avery Jenkins really has a talent for not only crafting a mystery, but creating a perfect small-town atmosphere that reminds me of an Agatha Christie novel, with metaphysical elements to make it even more gripping!

The story is about Asa Cire, a man who runs a very specialized antique shop that leans toward items that are difficult—and sometimes illegal—to obtain. Asa lives a fairly quiet life in a small town and he seems to have a working knowledge of everything in the universe, from dead languages to eastern wisdom to healing plants.  But, at the beginning of the novel, Asa is faced with a problem even he can’t solve when he finds himself having a strange vision of a dead teenage girl during a round of meditation in his home.

Disturbed by the vision, Asa soon discovers that the teenage girl is real and was murdered in the town twenty years earlier. Her killer was never caught and the case was never solved. Asa takes it upon himself to unravel the mystery behind the brutal killing and get justice for the girl, but first he must find out how all of the pieces of the case come together, including a strange woman who showed up at his house and an ancient indecipherable manuscript.

This book is one that you will definitely want to check out. I love a good mystery and I was fascinated with the way this one played out. ‘Dark River’ is unmissable! I give it five stars.

As Good As Can Be

Description As Good As Can Be by William A. Glass

‘As Good As Can Be’ is a novel about the wayward son of an alcoholic army officer.  As his dysfunctional family moves from one military base to the next, Dave Knight develops a give-a-damn attitude that goes well with his ironic sense of humor.  In high school he joins other delinquents in a series of escapades, some dangerous, others funny, and a few that would be worthy of jail time should the troublemakers be caught.

After barely graduating Dave gets drafted into the army and sent to guard a nuclear weapons depot in Korea.  There he runs afoul of his sergeant and must scramble to avoid dishonorable discharge.

‘As Good As Can Be’ draws on the author’s experiences growing up in an out-of-control military family during the 1950’s and his own military experience.

My Thoughts As Good As Can Be by William A. Glass

Guest Review by Sol A.

As Good As Can Be’ by William A. Glass is not only a novel, but a snapshot of mid-century America through the eyes of a young man. Dave Knight is the son of an Army officer who is brought back to America with his family after living in Iran for most of the first five years of his life. Little Dave comes from a big family, with a father, a mother and four siblings so getting attention as a child most often comes in the form of acting out. Becoming a bit of a problem child, Dave barely scrapes his way through high school and is just getting his life together when he is drafted into the Vietnam war.

There is nothing I love more than a period novel and there just don’t seem to be enough mid-20th century ones out there, so this was an exciting read for me. The look at the 1950’s and 1960’s was so nostalgic and warmhearted that I have to assume William A. Glass has as much love for that time period as I do. Of course, things take a slightly darker turn when Dave goes to Vietnam, but the juxtaposition of the country entering the war and ending it’s 1950’s hay-day as a metaphor for growing up was so well executed and brilliantly done.

This is a commendably written novel and one that I will be thinking about for a long time to come. Glass writes skillfully and with just enough emotion to keep you invested in the characters and desperate to see what happens next. When Dave finally began to settle down and become an adult I found myself saying ‘aww’ out loud because I almost felt that I’d watched him grow up throughout the book. Not too many books stir that type of emotion within me. I highly recommend this one for your next read! I give it 4.5 stars.

Review Fractured Prophecy: Science Fiction Action Adventure by PJ McDermott

Guest Review by Sol A.

It’s the 23rd century and the earth has changed. Thousands of years of political and religious differences finally ended in a nuclear war that lasted a decade. The entire landscape of our planet has been altered. Now, what remains of humanity look to a new prophet. A prophecy has been revealed that the Messiah will appear on distant planets just before the end of days. A few years before ‘Fractured Prophecy’ begins, a man who called himself ‘The Teacher’ appeared and began performing miracles on a planet called Prosperine. Of course, many assume that this Teacher is the prophesied Messiah. But in a previous book in the series, the Teacher dies protecting his people from radiation that had been poisoning the planet.

How does a prophecy survive after the prophet is dead? This is a question that is both asked and answered in ‘Fractured Prophecy,’ the fourth book in the ‘Prosperine’ series by P.J. Mcdermott. A stunning space opera full of action, interplanetary politics, and real human emotions.

This novel brings a thought provoking element of Christianity into science fiction in a way that I’ve never seen before in any other book. The Teacher as a Christ like figure is a formidable allusion and one that didn’t come across as hokey or eyeroll-worthy as it might have in the hands of a less capable writer. The society that McDermott creates is varied and extensive. Many smaller details that sci-fi readers often leave out (such as pets, plants, clothing, etc.) were effectively used in this story and it really served to create a fuller picture and a more in-depth fictional universe. The characters all seemed like real people that you might meet in everyday life, only centuries in the future. A great read and one I suggest you pick up as soon as possible. 5 stars!

About PJ McDermottFractured Prophecy: Science Fiction Action Adventure by PJ McDermott

Born in Scotland, PJ McDermott moved to Australia 50 years ago, and now lives in the tropics in the North Queensland town of Trinity Beach. He started writing after he retired from the corporate treadmill and published his first novel in 2015— Small Fish Big Fish, a coming of age thriller set during the sixties. But he has always read and loved adventure and science fiction books. PJ has fond early memories of hiding under the blankets in his bed, torch in hand, reading 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Gulliver’s Travels. In his teenage years, like many other kids, he had lots of unanswered questions about God and the purpose of life (is there one?). Even today, similar questions remain unanswered in his mind, providing him with a springboard for his book series, ‘Prosperine’.
