Excerpt Saving the Selkie’s Heart by Ella Rose

Teddy,

Thanks so much for hosting my exclusive excerpt of Saving the Selkie’s Heart, Book 2 in The Selkie Seas series. In this scene, Lyall, a human born to two selkie (seal shapeshifter) parents, is attempting to change into a selkie for the first time on her birthday.

***

She made it to the cave about an hour before dawn. Naked, she laid her dress onto the pebbled beach and pulled the satchel with her father’s sealskin cross-bodied over her chest so that the strap settled between her bare breasts. Then she pulled her sealskin from the bag. The fur was silky underneath her hands, and the dark gray blubber underneath was dried and stiff.

How did this work again?

She shook the skin, then draped it over her front like an apron and waited for the magic to happen.

Nothing.

She held out her arm and draped it over. It covered her from shoulder to wrist, and the flippers hung limply down either side.

Nothing.

Knowing it would be useless, she tried the same motion on the other arm, but again, nothing happened.

She growled in frustration. She’d never seen the selkie Anchors change when they visited, though she’d tried peeking from the house windows. But the bluff hid the shoreline from view, and she’d seen nothing.

Maybe she was wearing it wrong?

She swung it around the back of her like a cloak and draped it over her shoulders so that the side flippers lay across her collarbones.

The waves whispered as they slid over her skin as she forced her chilled fingers to fasten the tiny bone hooks, what felt like dozens of them, to get the skin to close around her like a coat. Then she held it in place and reached up to pull the flattened head over her own blonde curls.

She waited, feeling the water lap at her ankles with icy teeth.

Failure, failure, it seemed to whisper to her. The old fear from last night crept over her and she shoved it back with a mental push.

She closed her eyes and pictured her father as he’d stared at her from the shore that afternoon. Let herself remember the hope and fierce determination sparkling in his eyes. He’d been proud of her then, she knew. Proud of her for doing what he no longer could.

You can do this, she thought to herself. Remember that feeling.

A tingling sensation crept over the back of her neck, like ants crawling over her skin. She twisted her head, trying to get rid of the feeling, but it intensified. It spread across her shoulders, everywhere the pelt touched, then continued down her arms and spine.

She closed her eyes, surrendering to the change.

But as the tingling encompassed her body, it changed, becoming more intense, sharper. It felt like bees were stinging her and she cried out as the sharp sensations pierced her skin.

She curled forward, falling to her knees as the stinging intensified. Her arms felt shorter, stronger as she lurched onto her hands so that they bore the weight of her upper body. Behind her, her legs stretched out, and she began to cry. Her legs burned as they fused together, turning into one strong tail with two flippers on the end.

She was being consumed by fire and her mind raced to figure out how to end it. Pain was everywhere, turning her brain into a single alarm of terror. She had one thought—what’s happening to me?—before the change crashed over her and everything went black.

It was still dark when she became aware of herself again, with the night air around her seeming unchanged from her last conscious memory. Her mind felt sluggish as she tried to figure out where she was. The pebbles of the beach underneath her were like small, hot balls, and she longed to cool her skin in the water that lapped at her head.

She tried to raise herself up, intending to crawl into the water to relieve the pressure, but her body wouldn’t respond. Her entire being felt like it belonged to someone else as she tried to move her legs to push herself forward. But she only rolled herself on one side, tipping over like a barrel. There was a sensation of choking from something wound around her neck, and she remembered her satchel lying cross-bodied over her torso before she entered the water.

She wriggled her body again, trying to use her hips to lurch herself further into the water, and it worked. She slipped under as a wave crashed over her, carrying her forward into the dark coolness of the water.

It was like another world. She wriggled her body again and felt the pressure of the water change as she swam forward. Angling upward, where she knew the surface to be, she tried to stand, knowing she was in shallow water still. But her legs couldn’t find the sandy bottom and her arms didn’t feel right as she moved them.

In desperation, she opened her eyes, intending to kick her way to the surface with her dying breaths, if need be. But she froze as she saw the sight of the sea floor below her.

Several feet down, she saw a clump of brain coral surrounded by an assortment of fish so brightly colored it was as if they had sunlight filtering down on them. She looked around, her panic momentarily forgotten, as she saw the strange world of life hidden just below the surface.

How could she see under the water? And how was she able to hold her breath longer than she’d ever been able to before? She glanced around her and saw the darkness of the rest of the ocean stretching out before her. What else lay under the water? What exotic things could she find if she went a little further?

Motion caught her peripheral vision, and she turned, sensing something moving close to her body. She craned her neck, bending her body nearly in half, impossibly limber, and saw the rest of her body. It was covered in glossy dark fur. Where her legs had been, now was a long body that tapered to two flippers clenched together as a tail.

She had done it! She had changed!

I hope you enjoyed this exciting scene of Lyall’s. You can read more about her adventure in Saving the Selkie’s Heart, Book 2 in the Selkie Seas series by Ella Rose.

Best,

Ella Rose

Whipped

Description Charred by G.P.  Gottlieb

Alene Baron is dealing with frustrated employees, closed schools, and a homeless man who harasses customers outside the door of her café.

Then, two dead bodies turn up in the burned remains of buildings owned by the husband of Alene’s best friend and pastry chef, Ruthie. Both bodies are wearing jackets that once belonged to Ruthie and crumbled in the pockets are the café’s distinctive wrappers. At the same time, Alene’s uncle, a convicted felon, has resurfaced after disappearing for 22 years. It’s all too much for the owner of the Whipped and Sipped Café.

Praise Whipped and Sipped Mysteries Series by G.P.  Gottlieb

“Readers looking for mysteries well steeped in both culinary traditions and realistic conflicts between career and family will relish this multifaceted investigative piece, which draws readers in from the start with its realistic balance of intrigue and life challenges.-D. Donovan, Midwest Book Review

“If you are looking for a slightly different take on a culinary cozy mystery, this is the debut to read.”-Carstairs Considered

“Warm and cool, sassy and savvy, GP Gottlieb has written a murder mystery that is as interesting as the family dynamic itself — exploring its alliances, intrigues and the possibility of how people can protect, surprise, and, quite literally — kill each other. A fun, delicious read!”- Marcy Heisler, theatrical lyricist

‘Gottlieb sets the stage beautifully for readers and with providing the list of characters in the beginning, you have your own little cheat sheet of sorts.  And with all the twists and turns in Smothered you will be grateful to have the list so that you can keep track of everyone and check off those you believe are innocent.  However, when the real killer is revealed I’m sure you will be as shocked as I was because I’m certain they weren’t even on your radar.”- Cozy Mystery Book Reviews

‘Smothered’ won the silver medal in the mystery category from the CIPA Evvy Awards.

Interview with G.P.  Gottlieb, Author of ‘Charred’

TR: Please tell us something about Charred that is not in the summary.  (About the book, character you particularly enjoyed writing etc.)

G.P.G: The summer of 2020 was hard for all humanity – we panicked about catching the poorly understood virus that was felling healthy young adults and forcing all of us to cower in our homes. I also had the additional pain of being unable to get anywhere near my father as he struggled during his final weeks. I recalled how disturbing it had been to have to walk around the building and wave at my 93-year-old dad until my mother could no longer push his wheelchair to the window. And I decided to set Charred during that very difficult time.

TR: I always enjoy looking at the names that authors choose to give their characters. Where do you derive the names of your characters?  Are they based on real people you knew or now know in real life? How do you create names for your characters?

G.P.G: I close my eyes and imagine the character – the name usually comes to me! When our son was born, we had several names planned, but I took one look at him and said, “there’s Gabie.” It’s just like that with the characters (my other children!).

TR: Where did you get the inspiration for your cover?

G.P.G.: My publisher uses a fabulous graphic designer named Ellie, who has created all three gorgeous covers. She also designed my new website and is one of the sweetest young women I’ve ever met. Check out her website to see many more fabulous book covers: https://www.creativedigitalstudios.com (but if you hire her, please tell her that she should work on my stuff first)!

TR: Which actors would you like to see play Alene, if the book were to become a movie, play, or mini series.  (you are welcome to choose actors for other characters as well)

G.P.G.: What a fun question!

Alene – Maggie Gyllenhaal

Frank – Nathan Fillion

Ruthie- Alison Brie

Benjie –Jake Gyllenhaal

Edith- Emma Thompson

Cal -John Carroll Lynch

Olly – Whitmer Thomas (comedian)

Kofi – Dewayne Perkins (comidian)

TR: What kind of messages do you try to instill in your writing?

G.P.G.: My characters have things that are important to them – eg: Ruthie tries to convey thoughtfulness, Alene wants to convey a spirit of camaraderie, and Olly just wants everyone to have fun. All three of my books boils down to counting on family and friends to get through difficult times.

TR: What draws you to this genre?

G.P.G.: I love mysteries but prefer the kind that involve a puzzle rather than disturbing or shocking details. My motto is Murder, Suspense, and Recipes: Just a Little Cozy. That’s because I enjoy both reading and writing nuanced, thought-provoking mysteries without gratuitous sex or violence.

TR: Will Alene have more to tell readers in the future?

G.P.G.: Yes, at first, I thought this would just be a trilogy, but suddenly I imagined the next story, and I think it’s going to be called POUNDED (as in pounded chicken breast, which Alene might prepare at home) – since all the titles are both cooking and murder terms).

TR: Do you have any writing projects that you are currently working on?

G.P.G: I’m working on the next Whipped and Sipped novel and also occasionally on a novel in stories that I keep setting aside. And I’m always working on essays to publish on Medium.Com or in journals – they’re observations about life, travel, family and everything under the sun (available on my website: gpgottlieb.com).

Dead Reckoning

Description Dead Reckoning by Lea O’Harra

Indiana, January 2010.

It’s a hot summer’s day in 1984 when twelve-year-old Gilly and her friend Sally find a dead new-born in a shoebox in the cemetery of their tiny town. Deciding to keep their discovery a secret, they bury the body in Gilly’s yard.

The results are disastrous. Flowers are mysteriously left on strollers. Two local children disappear and end up dead. A suspect is arrested and confesses, blaming the deaths on the girls’ having taken the dead baby.

Gilly grows up but is haunted by what’s happened. As a young woman, she flees the town and its memories, going all the way to Japan.
Returning with her Japanese husband Toshi to attend her mother’s funeral, Gilly finds the past is not past. She’s threatened, and someone is putting flowers on strollers again.

When another child is abducted, Gilly knows she must discover the truth about what happened all those years ago before more lives are lost.

Praise Dead Reckoning by Lea O’Harra

“Both a drama and a thriller, full of twists and human insight.”-Thomas Waugh

“The immediate declaration of past events,  the discovery and concealment of the dead baby, provides a gripping start to this book.
The story is simple yet powerful, immediately drawing the reader into a world that identifies the challenges of growing up in a small town in Indiana.
The book tackles the casual racism that is often overlooked, with great clarity. Although this is a crime novel it is also a powerful story about how a single childhood event can influence the future.
It compels you to share the history and become part of the small-town network. Through a nexus of characters, we see how relationships that are made in our formative years, affect our lives.
The story is more than a crime novel. It also serves to gives a fascinating insight into life in a small town in the USA, through the eyes of somebody who never really wanted to return.”-ReallyPoshScouser, Amazon

Praise Lea O’Harra

“Lea O’Harra offers us a whodunnit set in a Japan labouring under the weight of cultural imperialism, a country where the characters find that their friends and lovers are really strangers  and imperfect ones at that…-Nick Sweet, author of the Inspector Velázquez series

’With her deep knowledge of Japanese culture, superb writing, and sensitivity to human foibles. O’Harra has crafted a cross-cultural whodunnit sure to please Japanophiles and mystery lovers alike.”-Suzanne Kamata, author of Losing Kei

Awards Lea O’Harra

Autumn 2017 “Lady First” was awarded ‘finalist’ status in the crime fiction section of the Beverly Hill Book Awards.

‘Lady First’ was also a finalist in the National Indie Excellence Awards in 2018.

Interview with Lea O’Harra

TR: Please tell us something about ‘Dead Reckoning’ that is not in the summary. (About the book, characters you particularly enjoyed writing etc.)

LO: I based the setting of Dead Reckoning on my hometown of Rolling Prairie – population 500 – located in the northwest corner of Indiana. But unlike Bryon (the dangerous town depicted in my novel) Rolling Prairie was an idyllic spot for a child. Sited in rural countryside midway between two large cities ignorant of its very existence, the town’s streets at that time were nearly empty of traffic, and we could freely and safely ride our bikes everywhere. There were vacant lots to play baseball in, lots of trees to climb, and we loved frequenting a place called Bozek’s that had a pinball machine, booths with juke boxes, and a soda fountain. Naturally, some of the characters in the story bear a slight resemblance to people I knew as a child, but mostly they are composites of various characteristics I observed.

TR: I always enjoy looking at the names that authors choose to give their characters. Where do you derive the names of your characters? Are they based on real people you knew or now know in real life? How do you create names for your characters?

LO: While novelists like Charles Dickens were in the habit of giving names to characters reflective of their personalities (with a character called Flora, for example, exhibiting fresh and attractive qualities), I observed no such etiquette in Dead Reckoning. I simply tried to use names that were common in the States at that time. The exception is ‘Gilly,’ short for ‘Gillian’. It is a name which, I imagine, most Americans would rarely have encountered in the mid-eighties and would tend to pronounce, at first glance – that is, seeing the name written and not having heard it before – with a hard rather than a soft ‘g’.

TR: Where did you get the inspiration for your cover?

LO: My publisher, Sharpe Books, chose the cover.

TR: Which actress would you like to see play Gilly from ‘‘Dead Reckoning’ if it were optioned for a movie or series? Are there any other characters you would like to match with actors or actresses? If so, please do so here.

LO: I would choose the following actors to play the three main characters of Dead Reckoning in their adult versions: Millie Bobby Brown to play Gilly Kataoka, Sadie Sink to play Sally Pawlowski, and Joe Keery to play Tim Collins.

TR: What draws you to the crime genre?

LO: I like the crime genre because I believe all life can be found in its pages. This is not true of many other genres. Romances, for example, of course focus on stories about love. But crime fiction includes hate as well as love, and it can cover so much else, so much more. Like travel literature, it can describe the scenery and customs of far-distant lands. Like biographies, it can delineate the subtle components and nuances of individual character. Like historical fiction, it can convey us to worlds past. I’m mainly drawn to crime fiction because I’m fascinated by the human condition: by personalities, by the circumstances that can drive people to that most extreme of acts: murder.

TR: Describe the room you are sitting in as though it was a scene that Gilly was describing. (either as a child or adult)

LO: I feel the familiar surge of affection on entering our living room. It’s a space that’s welcoming, like being embraced by an old friend. I automatically relax. My troubles fade. On this cold winter’s day, I’m drawn to the fire, hypnotized by the flames in the wood-burner visible through a large window at the front of the stove. They writhe and sway, casting flickers of light and shadow on walls and ceiling. A few feet from the hearth, there’s a bentwood rocking chair and two light blue sofas at right angles to each other, one covered by a patchwork throw. A baby grand stands apart, aloof in a corner. With a Beethoven sonata on the lid and the bench drawn back, it seems to invite me to sit down and play. A grandfather’s clock ticks away the minutes in this handsome paneled space filled with paintings and books, the hardwood floor covered by faded Turkish carpets.

TR: When did you first have a desire to write? How did this desire manifest itself?

LO: I’ve wanted to write since I first learned to read. I think it’s natural. If you love reading, you probably also love writing. I can still recall the tremendous excitement I felt when the alphabet my first-grade teacher insisted we memorize and learn to painstakingly reproduce on paper – in small and capital letters – crystalized into words. Into meaning! Suddenly I was standing at the gateway not only to the world of literature and history but of every subject. The experience gave me an exhilarating sense both of flight and escape that I’ve only experienced twice since. The first was when I learned how to ride a bike and the second, when I first flew in a plane. As for writing, I began keeping a diary as a child. I also recall trying to write a novel when I was nine or ten and then shredding it up and throwing it away, disconsolate at the feebleness of my effort. Meanwhile, I was known as a bookworm, always carrying something to read with me wherever I went and even hiding a novel under my pillow when I went to bed.

TR: What is next for Lea O’Harra?

LO: I have begun a fifth novel, another standalone mystery. It is set in three countries: America, England, and Japan. I hope to finish it within the next six months.
