Murphy Murphy

Description Murphy Murphy and the Case of Serious Crisis by Keith Hirshland

Murphy Murphy comes from a long line of male Murphys. All were named Murphy and all were cops. This Murphy heads the Department of Redundancy Department and his superior officer, Captain David “Dud” Hill has found him a case. The Captain’s niece is in a rock ‘n roll band called Serious Crisis, and it seems items belonging to members of the band have started to disappear.

Were these items stolen? Were they simply lost? As Murphy Murphy works the case, he must chase down the clues all the while dealing with grammatical anomalies that drive him crazy.  As Murphy gets closer to the answers he seeks, one more “thing” goes missing; the Captain’s niece. Suddenly, in an instant, the stakes in the case of Serious Crisis become a lot more dire.

Part Jasper Fforde, part Michael Connelly; Murphy Murphy and the Case of Serious Crisis combines humor, mystery, and grammar goofs as the detective pursues clues and suspects from coast to coast. It’s an entertaining and educational read for all ages.

Excerpt Murphy Murphy and the Case of Serious Crisis by Keith Hirshland

THE STORY BEGINS

Murphy Murphy stood under the steady stream of hot water pouring from the shower head for a few minutes longer than normal. He closed his eyes and gave thought to his paternal lineage, from great great grandfather down. They were all Murphy Murphy’s, and they were all cops.

Another characteristic of Murphy progeny was that the men, after marriage, sired one, and only one, male offspring. A lad that, tradition held, would be named Murphy. They fathered girls as well, of course, as many as they wanted or could afford. But only first. Once a baby boy, a male Murphy, was christened into the world, the baby making stopped. As you can imagine, that placed an inordinate amount of pressure on each and every Murphy to continue the family bloodline. Most made quick work of the obligation by marrying young and getting right to work at keeping the line moving. Most, but not all. The currently soaking wet Murphy Murphy seemed to be thumbing his nose at the family custom, having recently celebrated his 31st birthday as a bachelor.

No Murphy Murphy’s had brothers, but this Murphy Murphy had a sister who was, as another family ritual dictated, named Muffy. This Murphy’s Muffy rebelled, ran away from home, changed her name to Lisa Lisa, then formed a rock and roll band. As the water started to cool, Murphy Murphy thought of her and hummed her number one hit, “Lost in Emotion”.

THE STORY CONTINUES

Murphy wrapped the towel around his waist and slid his size eleven feet into a brand-new pair of navy, Nappa leather slippers. They looked just like the ones he remembered running up the stairs to get whenever Grandpa Murphy Murphy, and later his own “Pops”, Murphy Murphy, asked for them. He knew for a fact great Grandpa Murphy Murphy had a similar pair as well. He’d heard stories of his Grandmother’s scolding cries about the “waste of a hard earned two dollars and ninety cents!” The memory made him smile; he only wished his modern day “house shoe” indulgence cost so little. All clean, with tootsies warm and cozy, he grabbed his phone. A red dot indicated he had missed one call.

“Murph,” Murphy heard the voice say the nickname he disliked. Truth be told he didn’t really mind the abbreviated version of his given name, he just resented the fact that his captain frequently used it. “Captain Hill here. I need you back at the precinct bright and early tomorrow.” Murphy Murphy was a seven-year veteran of the force and, as of now, the only member of the recently formed Department of Redundancy Department at the cop shop. The irony, while oblivious to some, was obvious to Detective Murphy Murphy. He hit the pause button on the phone and rolled his eyes.

At the Captain’s request he had stayed late that night copyreading and editing the paperwork that was scheduled to be filed by other officers and detectives. Captain Hill liked clean, concise reports and he knew Murphy was a stickler for good grammar. Murphy hoped the additional hours spent at work might translate into a little extra shuteye the next day. Clearly that was not meant to be. He hit the play icon and the message picked up where he had left it off.

“I’ve got something special for you, pal. A case that, I think, is right up your alley. Let’s say I see you standing at attention, in front of my desk, at 8 AM in the morning.” There it was. Murphy Murphy cringed after hearing the redundancy even though he knew it was coming. Captain Hill was well aware of Murphy’s aversion to redundant phrases. In fact, Hill took particular glee in telling everyone who would listen that the young detective “hated them with a passion” and he made every effort to use as many of them as he could think of around Murphy Murphy. The Captain had made his mocking abundantly transparent at the outset. When telling Murphy of his promotion and new assignment the Captain added, with a smirk, “I debated giving you a partner but figured, considering the caseload, that would be,” he paused for effect, “redundant.”

“Jerk,” Murphy practically spat as he deleted the message. Then he kicked off his slippers, shed the towel, pulled down his Murphy bed, and called it a night.

Praise for Keith Hirshland

“I really enjoyed following along with each person as you discovery more about each one along with how four unsolved mysteries may be linked to everything..’Big Flies’ story takes off like a flash.. This is a great adventure and one that I recommend you check out. You will not be disappointed.”-JBrownder Book Reviews

“ I found myself intrigued by this talented writer’s style.. A mystery woven into another mystery. The suspense was great. I enjoyed following the characters throughout the book.. this novel was realistic, stunning, and one that all readers can easily connect to in one or more ways. Brilliant, clever, and mysterious. Keith Hirshland has a way that lured me in deep. I couldn’t stop reading it.”-Urban Book Reviews

“This is an engaging story well told. The plot hinges on the power of secrets and secrets revealed but Keith fully understands the heart of the story is the unfolding of relationships fulfilled or not. Can we ever really know who we know? While this novel works beautifully as a nostalgic and fun caper tale it’s all wrapped up in fathers and sons, true and lasting friends and of course intriguing women. Keith is aiming high here. Really, really well done.”- David R. Hill, Amazon Reviewer

“I had to dig my teeth in the first pages but once I did I was on a twisty turning ride. This one turned out to be worth the ride.  A fast paced story with great characters. The plot had some twists making it entertaining.  As the bodies begin piling up it’s a race to solve the mystery.  I enjoyed reading ‘The Flower Girl Murder’. and look forward to reading more from this author. “-My Reading Journeys

“Author Keith Hirshland provides a multi-layered storyline that has enough mystery, suspense, drama, treachery, secrets, and intriguing twists and turns that keeps the reader guessing, while weaving an intricate and complicated web of what the motive of the murders could have been, and the spectrum of possible participants who could have been involved in committing them. And if that isn’t enough to captivate the reader, the author adds a wonderful touch of humor and a bit of romance into the mix to keep them entertained.”-Jersey Girl Book Reviews

 Medellin Acapulco Cold

Description Medellin: Acapulco Cold ( Rick Fontain 3) by Bill Fortin

In March 1987, the CIA’s Operation Acapulco Cold took on the Medellín cartel. The journey would be dangerous. The alternative for not recovering the nuke would be too horrible to imagine.

A theft occurs as a result of President Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev’s treaty agreement in January 1986. Russian SS-20 medium-range missiles were removed from Eastern Europe and their nuclear MIRV packages removed. A shadow group inside the failing Russian government steals three of the nose-cone assembles.

A Russian named Geonov is charged with selling one of these devices to the Medellin cartel. The asking price was $40 million dollars in cash. Pablo Escobar did not even blink when he was offered one.  Operation Acapulco Cold is the detailed action taken by the CIA to address this life-altering situation.

Excerpt Medellin: Acapulco Cold ( Rick Fontain 3) by Bill Fortin

In 1953, at the age of 25, Geonov was posted to Mexico City where he learned Spanish and met Raúl Castro. It was onboard a ship while he was returning from a European youth festival. When he arrived in Mexico, he was given an assignment to a minor post in the Soviet Embassy.

In 1955, Geonov met Che Guevara through Raúl Castro in Mexico City. If you have studied the works of WEB Griffin, you can clearly see that this happenstance was not going to benefit the United States. Geonov proceeded to violate embassy procedures by befriending Guevara who was fascinated with the Soviet way of life. Guevara’s questions prompted Geonov to provide him with a variety of Soviet books, magazines, and pamphlets. Both men promised to keep in touch, and so they did.

Recalled to Moscow in November 1956, Geonov was discharged from the Foreign Service. He went to work as a Spanish translator for the state-run Soviet Spanish-language publishing company, Editorial Progreso. Two years later, in the late summer of 1958, he was drafted into the KGB. In that same year, on 1 September, Valentin Geonov, began a two-year training course as an intelligence officer. This was interrupted by the Cuban Revolution. In October 1959, his training was halted. He was ordered by the newly appointed Soviet deputy premier, Anastas Mikoyan, to accompany him to Mexico.

In February 1960, Mikoyan took Geonov on an arranged visit to Havana, Cuba. Geonov made a gift of a handgun to his old friend Che Guevara on behalf of Mother Russia. Geonov return to Mexico City the next month as a senior KGB officer with a rank of major. During the October 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, he coordinated the intelligence reporting from his agents in Florida.

All information-gathering on American military preparations during the saga of missiles in Cuba was his responsibility. Geonov noted in his written assessment of the crisis in Cuba that at no time would there be any danger of war. He stated on more than one occasion that a nuclear confrontation was not very likely. Also, just as an aside, it is unclear whether or not he befriended a man named Lee Harvey Oswald during his time in Mexico . . . and the moon is made entirely of blue cheese!

Geonov did provide his services as an interpreter to Fidel Castro on the dictators’ visit to the Soviet Union in 1963. In 1968, as I was making my way through the missile ranges of White Sands and Fort Bliss, Geonov was recalled to Moscow, where he again was promoted to senior analyst on Caribbean, Central, South, and North America policy.

A report he compiled in 1975 recognized the growing peril to the power of the Soviet Union in geopolitical terms. Citing the example of the British Empire, he warned that the Soviet commitments should be tailored to a few key areas. This recommendation would allow Soviet influence to be able to operate in a more efficient fashion and with a higher success rate. One section of the report suggested the establishment of a Soviet foot- hold on the Arabian Peninsula, the most Marxist country at the time in this region. Of course we have all been exposed to how unimportant the ports, coastline, and airfields in South Yemen are viewed in today’s world.

Praise Stinger: Operation Cyclone (Rick Fontain 2) by Bill Fortin

“Maryland author Bill Fortin served in the US Army 3rd Armor Division from 1968 to 1970 he understands and has witness the horrors of war and its aftermath on soldiers. He places the facts of the Cold War before us in a manner that will prevent us from forgetting that period in history and its impact on global politics today. Not only is he a very fine writer, but he also is a standard bearer who reminds the reader of the atrocities of the Cold War and the manner in which we as a country dealt with it. Very highly recommended.- Grady Harp, Amazon Hall of Fame & Top 100 Reviewer

“Stinger Operation Cyclone was a page turner from page 1. I was swept in and ended up on a fast paced ride to the end. Bill Fontin knows how to weave a story with the details, descriptions of people and places to intrigue the reader and keep you engaged.  Fontin writes expertly about the Middle East and military topics in a way that your drawn in and unable to put the book down.  A cast of characters from each location of the story is provided at the end that helps keep the reader involved in this fast paced story. I look forward to reading more in the series.”-Sherry, My Reading Journeys

“I really like this Book 2 in the Rick Fontain series by Bill Fortin. Bill Fortin is a US Army veteran himself, and has chosen to write some excellent “cold war” fiction, describing the day-to-day implementation of “Charlie Wilson’s War” which described the US assistance to the Afghan mujahideen. I agree with other readers who reported that this book felt like reading history. The first person narrative is as lively and engaging as the depiction of the Battle of Gettysburg in KILLER ANGELS by Michael Shaara. There is excellent dialogue and interesting interplay between CIA operative Rick, along with US Army Special Forces, Delta Force, and the Afghan mujahideen fighting the invading Soviet goliath. It was fascinating for me to read the ground-level description of how this new technology allowed the Afghans, most often fighting from horseback, to level the playing-field with the Soviets. I served in Afghanistan 2002-2003, and really appreciated his word pictures of the terrain. Strong work, Bill Fortin. I look forward to the third in the series.”- Robert Enzenauer, Amazon Review

Praise Redeye Fulda Cold: (Rick Fontain 1) by Bill Fortin

“With a smooth, wry touch, Bill Fortin spins a page-turning Cold War tale capturing both the great bravery and the occasional comic moments — some intentional, some classic SNAFUs — of U.S. military intelligence saving the world from Russia invasion.”- W.E.B. Griffin & William E. Butterworth IV, #1 New York Times and Wall Street Journal Bestselling Authors

““Bill Fortin’s, Redeye Fulda Cold, is a historically accurate, yet humorous account of one soldier’s mission during the Cold War.
Although written as fiction, the novel is an exercise in authenticity, with stretches illuminating the technical expertise required for a unit to accommodate seemingly never-ending revisions to Cold War objectives. Fortin cloaks the technical military facts and technology in character moments, using them to highlight Fontain’s sarcasm and tongue-in-cheek humor. Can’t wait to read the next Rick Fontain novel!”-Lisa Wieman Meerdter, Amazon Review

Girl From Spaceship Earth

Description Girl From Spaceship Earth by Patricia Ravasio

The true story of a life intertwined with the utopian ideas of an American genius.

A mind-blowing two-day interview with iconic futurist Buckminster Fuller in 1982 Chicago leads an overeager advertising copywriter to promise she’ll share his urgent messages with the world. She has no idea what she is getting herself into, scarcely understanding what he is talking about.

When his dire predictions come true on America’s worst day (9/11) she must face up to her commitment, which morphs into a fiery obsession thanks to unsettling discoveries about Bucky’s archives further confirming the truth of his warnings. Her outsized passions threaten her relationships and her sanity as she grapples furiously to bring his ideas back into the world.

This heartrending karmic tell-all memoir is about climbing out of comfort zones to find your own voice and make a difference in the world. It also gives readers a charming introduction to the ideas of a long lost genius you’ve probably never heard of.

Excerpt Girl From Spaceship Earth by Patricia Ravasio

Bucky set an alarm on his pocket watch, tucked it away into his vest pocket, and in a gentle, cultivated New Eng- land voice, he said, “It is very nice to see you, Pat. One day, you will come to understand the odd time and space continuum of our meeting here today.”

What? Had the planet’s friendly genius just launched us off a paranormal cliff?

“I know it is a difficult concept to grasp,” he continued, “but time is not linear, and our paths will cross again and again.”

I nodded, mesmerized by his words. I wanted to follow up with a question, but my mind went blank so I just smiled and nodded and pretended like I understood. Not exactly my most shining moment as a reporter.

He furrowed his brow. “As you already know, just be- cause you don’t understand something doesn’t mean it’s not true.”

I gave him a small smile. “I feel like I’ve heard those words before.”

“And it is certainly no reason not to keep listening.”

“Yes, of course. But you know, I never really expect to understand anything anyway.” Realizing how stupid that must have sounded, I willed myself to just stop talking and listen. I was a reporter after all. I reached for my pen. I would get it all down then figure it out later.

“You are exactly right,” he said. “We can never be sure of our comprehension, since almost all physical realities are incomprehensible by humans, at least for now.”

I couldn’t resist trying. “But surely we know what we ourselves comprehend?”

“Aha, not quite—but you are on the right track. One day, we will. One day, humans will have that capability. We are evolving in that direction.”

He gestured toward a staircase and gallantly held out his arm for me. “I want to start up on the rooftop. There is something I want to show you.”

He led the way out through a thick metal door at the top of a concrete staircase. Behind us the door slammed shut, sending us aloft into a brilliant blue sky dotted with cotton balls of clouds. A tiny river of traffic streamed far below on Lake Shore Drive.

As he led me to the north side of the roof he turned to make sure I was listening. “The first thing you should know is that I am here with you today because you will still be breathing this sweet Earthian air long after I am gone.”

The hair on the back of my neck stood up. I knew I had heard these exact words before.

“There are breakthroughs coming, an awakening of sorts, which your generation will lead us to,” he said, reaching out his hands as if to capture the entire universe in them. “Human consciousness is evolving to where we

will be able to use our minds to make the world work for one hundred percent of humanity.”

I pulled out my notebook and my best pen.

“To make this happen, we must all begin to live lives of conscious evolution, bearing responsibility for all that we are, which is nature’s finest and most complex experi- ment.”

“Conscious evolution—nature’s finest experiment” were the first words I wrote, feeling very much like an im- poster, despite the quality of my pen.

Bucky seemed to sense my nervousness because he stopped to think a minute, then pointed northward up Lake Michigan. “This is where I want to start, at what was going to be the end for me. Right there, in Montrose Harbor. It was a freezing day in November of 1927. My wife and I had just had a new baby. We’d only recently lost our four-year-old daughter to meningitis, which was at least partly my fault. I had been out gallivanting around like some big-shot architect, jabbering on about how to improve living conditions for all humanity while my own four-year-old daughter died in our drafty apartment.”

I scribbled furiously to get it all down.

“I turned out to be a terrible businessman, never both- ered enough about money. My new business went belly-up just as Anne gave birth to another daughter. I realized that if she got my life insurance money, she would have what she needed to take care of the baby.”

The sun felt overly warm, but I didn’t want to take the time to struggle out of my jacket. “How were you going to do it?” I asked, a bead of sweat running down my back.

His eyes locked onto mine. “Well, I was just going to jump into the water and swim out as far as I could.” He stopped for a minute, letting himself float back to his fifty-year-old memory. There was no sadness in his eyes. His face was alight with the passion of a storyteller.

“Something amazing happened then,” he said. “A voice inside my head spoke to me, saying, ‘What right do you have to end a life? You do not belong to you. You belong to all of humanity.’ I made a bargain with myself that I would allow myself to live, but only if I set out to serve all of humanity. I would discover the principles operative in Universe, the design laws of nature, and I would turn them over to my fellow man. I would make my life an experiment to see what one ordinary person could accomplish if he set out to work for the good of everyone.”

He’d saved himself by latching onto a passion. That cer- tainly sounded familiar, although I wasn’t sure interviewing a genius whose ideas I barely understood was going to help me find mine.
