Teetering On Disaster

Description Teetering On Disaster by Michaela Renee

Michaela Renee Johnson was just 12 years old in 1992 when a financial slump forced her family to move from an upscale area in Sacramento to a 27-ft trailer in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, with no electricity or running water — so no Nintendo or MTV. It wasn’t exactly the life that every adolescent dreams of, but it was, in fact, their reality.

Michaela chronicles these formative years (and beyond) in her often humorous, constantly candid true story, Teetering on Disaster. As the young Michaela navigates her way through the inherently melodramatic teen years, she must come to terms with relieving herself in the woods, shaving with a 10-cent borrowed razor in an irrigation ditch and taking what she called “bird baths” with a jug of water.

Somehow, in the midst of disorienting change, she learned to focus on what she was gaining instead of what she had lost. And in the end, she gained profound wisdom about her family and the world around her, and uncovered the truth about her own ability to thrive in the face of life’s inconveniences.

But the effects of her unorthodox upbringing don’t end at adulthood, and Teetering takes readers along as a grown Michaela stumbles upon a few “Mr. Right Nows,” gets divorced in her twenties, and ends up right back where she started: a small mountain town in the middle of nowhere.

Teetering on Disaster is a heartfelt, coming-of-age story written to inspire others to live a courageous life of authenticity and to speak their truth with grace. Michaela’s book is an unapologetically honest, authentic tale that will make readers laugh out loud and cry — sometimes at the same time.

My Thoughts Teetering On Disaster by Michaela Renee

I don’t think I’ve ever read a memoir quite like this one. Never have I laughed and cried and held my breath quite so much while reading about the life of someone that I didn’t know. What a life the author has had!

Michaela Renee Johnson experienced her first major upheaval in 1992 when her parents decided to sell their house to cover the expenses for their fledgling construction business. After this, Johnson’s parents moved their entire 5-person family into a 27-foot trailer with no running water or electricity in Northern California. At 11 years old, Michaela was perfectly poised to be the most uncomfortable of her siblings with the new living situation.

The book actually starts with a story about her shaving her legs for the first time in an irrigation ditch. A shift of the familiar rite of passage that I think most of us are happy we cannot relate to. Michaela turns many of her semi-horrifying childhood moments into funny stories and it’s clear she has found a way to look at it through rose-colored glasses.

The second portion of the book is more focused on stories from Michaela’s adult life, and these were a bit more emotional and heartbreaking. At times, this part was hard to follow as it just didn’t have the flow of the first part. However, it was still worth reading.

Leading such an unsettled childhood certainly affected her emotionally as an adult and lead her to do some interesting things. I definitely felt for her with what she dealt with during her marriage and it’s clear by the end of the book that she has worked a lot on herself and her own personal growth.

I admire her a lot and found myself rooting for her. Johnson writes beautifully, with just enough wit and humor to make most of the book sing. The detail and atmosphere she added to her stories were well-executed. The heights that she achieves in her career after such a challenging childhood are inspirational. I give it 4 stars.

I received the ebook for my honest opinion.

Time with Norma Jeane

Description Time With Norma Jeane: Time Travel Novel by Elyse Douglas

A young woman is hurled back to 1954 to spend a week with Marilyn Monroe.  Together, they embark on their own personal journeys — one a coming-of-age — the other, Marilyn’s journey, a struggle to reconcile with her past and perhaps change the future.

My Thoughts Time With Norma Jeane: Time Travel Novel by Elyse Douglas

In 1998 Darla’s mother died and a year later her father remarried and she does not get along with her step mother.  Obviously, her father doesn’t either because they argue all the time. Today is Darla’s 16th birthday and her dad and step mother are arguing again.   Darla has to get out of the house.  She takes her camera and dog, Sonny and goes for a long walk.  The sun starts to set when she realizes she should get home but the path turns strange and all of a sudden she ends up in 1954. It takes her a while to realize this but when she takes a miss step, still trying to get home, she stumbles and falls down a hill and onto the edge of a road.  A car passing by screeches to a halt and the woman gets out to help.  When Darla realizes it is Marilyn Monroe, she realizes that she is either dreaming or she somehow went back in time.

Marilyn takes her in and they become fast friends.  Darla use to watch Monroe’s movies with her mother and is a huge fan.  She also knows Monroe’s fate and starts to wonder if she can save her.

I loved the way the time travel itself is written.  It is quite imaginative.  Elyse Douglas always writes excellent time travel novels and ‘Time With Norma Jeane’ is no acceptation!  They captured the time and place expertly.  They really made Darla and Monroe come to life and catapulted me back to 1954 with them!  There was a scene with a very young Johnny Cash that I adored!

This is a book that is impossible to put down.  I cried when it ended because I didn’t want it to ever end.  I would love a sequel.  It probably wouldn’t make sense for a sequel with Marilyn Monroe but Darla could end up in another time with a different person. How about the man in black, himself? The possibilities are endless. I highly recommend ‘Time With Norma Jeane’ and give it 5 stars.

Time With Norma Jeane: Time Travel Novel by Elyse Douglas

Diary Of  Beatlemaniac by Patricia Gallo-StenmanDiary Of  Beatlemaniac by Patricia Gallo-Stenman

Thanks to Holly Monteith of Cynren Press , I am giving away one print copy of ‘Diary Of  Beatlemaniac’ by Patricia Gallo-Stenman.

Description Diary Of  Beatlemaniac by Patricia Gallo-Stenman

Driven by the frenzy of fan clubs, Beatles concerts, and endless dreams and meeting schemes, Diary of a Beatlemaniac: A Fab Insider’s Look at the Beatles Era romps through the heady, roller-coaster days of Beatlemania as seen through the eyes of one Philadelphia schoolgirl and her band of “Beatle Buddies.”

Compiled from the author’s own diary and extensive scrapbooking, and featuring a wealth of original photographs and exclusive interviews with Victor Spinetti and Hy Lit, this extraordinary slice of life peeks into the heart of an inner-city teen at the forefront of Beatlemania.

For Beatlemaniacs of any age, this memoir offers a unique glimpse into the groovy days of the Swingin’ Sixties and the chance to relive the magic of the pop-culture phenomenon called the Beatles.

My ThoughtsDiary Of  Beatlemaniac by Patricia Gallo-Stenman

I was born in 1963.  I have loved the Beatles for as long as I can remember.  As a young girl I hung on to the dream that one day I would get to see them live.  Of course, I was still too young when they stopped touring and when they eventually broke up.  Now as an adult, I wonder how all those girls at their concerts could stand being there.  All you could here was screaming and only the lucky ones were close enough to actually see them clearly.  It’s not like they had screens like they do now a days.

I still held out hope that I would see them individually.  My favorite was John but I was in 11th grade when he made his comeback and then was promptly killed. I remember driving to a memorial with a friend that was held in a park in our home town.  Eventually I got to see Paul. I also own their entire collection of music, including some rare.  Much individually collected over the years and a large boxed set.  Luckily my husband, Bill loves the Beatles too.

‘Diary Of  Beatlemaniac ‘ is taken from the diary of 13 year old Patricia Gallo-Stenman.  It is about her up bring including catholic school and her friends who were Beatlemaniacs as well.  It follows her and her friends over the course of 4 years.  Being a Beatlemaniac also started her on her path to a writing career which she started as a teen with a column for teens.

‘Diary Of  Beatlemaniac’ is a fun book for all Beatles fans.  It is certainly not ground breaking however, it takes those old enough to remember down memory lane. However, younger fans will enjoy it as well.

About Patricia Gallo-StenmanDiary Of  Beatlemaniac by Patricia Gallo-Stenman

While attempting to wrangle a press pass from a Philadelphia newspaper to meet the Beatles, Patricia Gallo-Stenman, then a teenager in blue-collar Southwest Philly of the 1960’s, was invited to write a weekly column for teenagers. Teen to Teen launched her writing career, and Patricia went on to work as a staff writer for the Philadelphia Evening and Sunday Bulletin.

A graduate of Temple University and the University of Stockholm (Sweden) International Graduate School, and an award-winning copywriter, she practiced journalism in northern Europe for nearly twenty-five years. She has also written about the Beatles for Discover, The Sunday Bulletin Magazine. Patricia lives near Dallas, Texas, with her identical twin daughters Jane and Margaretha.
