When I was in junior high school I was asked to research and write an essay with the topic of my choice. I chose to write about harp seal hunting.
I am sad to see that this barbaric practice has not changed much over the years. The baby seals are killed by being hit in the head, so that there is no damage to their fur.
Why do I write about this now, you may ask. For the 2008 Mini Challenge, one of the challenges was to read an essay. I decided to Google the word essays for fun and an animal rights essay came up. The writer’s name was Ashley, but no last name was given.
I am guessing that Ashley was about my age when I wrote about the plight of the harp seal, but I cannot be sure. Ashley chose to takle many animal rights issues in her essay. She made some very good and valid points however, I think it would have been better for her to focus on one issue. There is so much that she left out because her topic was too broad for one essay.
I have no idea what has become of the essay that I wrote so many years ago. However, if you would like to read Ashley’s animal rights essay, go here.
This is one of those practices that is so sick you can’t believe it’s real. It makes me cry every time. There is something really wrong with people.
Lezlie
Thank you for this, Teddy. It’s one of those things we’d sometimes rather forget about, and yet if we do, it will never stop.
Yes Lezlie and Nymeth, it is hard to believe that this is still happening in 2008. I wish it would all stop so that we could just “sweep it under the rug.”

Terrible people do that
One of my first stuffed animals was a seal, and my grandmother who passed away when I was 8 gave it to me. So it was a big treasure, and I carried it everywhere. As soon as I learned as a child that seals were killed for their fur, my heart was broken. I will never understand why or how people could do that to an innocent animal.
