Lyall wants desperately to find out where she belongs. When the opportunity comes to visit the Great Elder and save her father’s damaged sealskin, she sneaks away to join the clan in their migration. The only problem? Being born a human, she hasn’t the first clue how to survive on her own as a selkie!
The last thing Ceannas needs is babysitting duties, and Lyall only has eyes on her mission. Teddy,
Thanks so much for hosting my exclusive excerpt of Saving the Selkie’s Heart, Book 2 in The Selkie Seas series. In this scene, Lyall, a human born to two selkie (seal shapeshifter) parents, is attempting to change into a selkie for the first time on her birthday.
***
She made it to the cave about an hour before dawn. Naked, she laid her dress onto the pebbled beach and pulled the satchel with her father’s sealskin cross-bodied over her chest so that the strap settled between her bare breasts. Then she pulled her sealskin from the bag. The fur was silky underneath her hands, and the dark gray blubber underneath was dried and stiff.
How did this work again?
She shook the skin, then draped it over her front like an apron and waited for the magic to happen.
Nothing.
She held out her arm and draped it over. It covered her from shoulder to wrist, and the flippers hung limply down either side.
Nothing.
Knowing it would be useless, she tried the same motion on the other arm, but again, nothing happened.
She growled in frustration. She’d never seen the selkie Anchors change when they visited, though she’d tried peeking from the house windows. But the bluff hid the shoreline from view, and she’d seen nothing.
Maybe she was wearing it wrong?
She swung it around the back of her like a cloak and draped it over her shoulders so that the side flippers lay across her collarbones.
The waves whispered as they slid over her skin as she forced her chilled fingers to fasten the tiny bone hooks, what felt like dozens of them, to get the skin to close around her like a coat. Then she held it in place and reached up to pull the flattened head over her own blonde curls.
She waited, feeling the water lap at her ankles with icy teeth.
Failure, failure, it seemed to whisper to her. The old fear from last night crept over her and she shoved it back with a mental push.
She closed her eyes and pictured her father as he’d stared at her from the shore that afternoon. Let herself remember the hope and fierce determination sparkling in his eyes. He’d been proud of her then, she knew. Proud of her for doing what he no longer could.
You can do this, she thought to herself. Remember that feeling.
A tingling sensation crept over the back of her neck, like ants crawling over her skin. She twisted her head, trying to get rid of the feeling, but it intensified. It spread across her shoulders, everywhere the pelt touched, then continued down her arms and spine.
She closed her eyes, surrendering to the change.
But as the tingling encompassed her body, it changed, becoming more intense, sharper. It felt like bees were stinging her and she cried out as the sharp sensations pierced her skin.
She curled forward, falling to her knees as the stinging intensified. Her arms felt shorter, stronger as she lurched onto her hands so that they bore the weight of her upper body. Behind her, her legs stretched out, and she began to cry. Her legs burned as they fused together, turning into one strong tail with two flippers on the end.
She was being consumed by fire and her mind raced to figure out how to end it. Pain was everywhere, turning her brain into a single alarm of terror. She had one thought—what’s happening to me?—before the change crashed over her and everything went black.
It was still dark when she became aware of herself again, with the night air around her seeming unchanged from her last conscious memory. Her mind felt sluggish as she tried to figure out where she was. The pebbles of the beach underneath her were like small, hot balls, and she longed to cool her skin in the water that lapped at her head.
She tried to raise herself up, intending to crawl into the water to relieve the pressure, but her body wouldn’t respond. Her entire being felt like it belonged to someone else as she tried to move her legs to push herself forward. But she only rolled herself on one side, tipping over like a barrel. There was a sensation of choking from something wound around her neck, and she remembered her satchel lying cross-bodied over her torso before she entered the water.
She wriggled her body again, trying to use her hips to lurch herself further into the water, and it worked. She slipped under as a wave crashed over her, carrying her forward into the dark coolness of the water.
It was like another world. She wriggled her body again and felt the pressure of the water change as she swam forward. Angling upward, where she knew the surface to be, she tried to stand, knowing she was in shallow water still. But her legs couldn’t find the sandy bottom and her arms didn’t feel right as she moved them.
In desperation, she opened her eyes, intending to kick her way to the surface with her dying breaths, if need be. But she froze as she saw the sight of the sea floor below her.
Several feet down, she saw a clump of brain coral surrounded by an assortment of fish so brightly colored it was as if they had sunlight filtering down on them. She looked around, her panic momentarily forgotten, as she saw the strange world of life hidden just below the surface.
How could she see under the water? And how was she able to hold her breath longer than she’d ever been able to before? She glanced around her and saw the darkness of the rest of the ocean stretching out before her. What else lay under the water? What exotic things could she find if she went a little further?
Motion caught her peripheral vision, and she turned, sensing something moving close to her body. She craned her neck, bending her body nearly in half, impossibly limber, and saw the rest of her body. It was covered in glossy dark fur. Where her legs had been, now was a long body that tapered to two flippers clenched together as a tail.
She had done it! She had changed!
