War Torn

With some 200 million people in more than forty countries affected by armed conflict or genocide, refugees are appearing in record numbers. War Torn is timely in how it brings us intimately into the lives of civilians who have survived wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia, Guatemala, and Sri Lanka.

Alongside stories that convey intimately the destruction and heartbreak of armed conflict, Miller captures the courage and resilience he calls “a remarkable kind of light,” an essential counterpoint to the grief and trauma that war creates. The stories in War Torn are powerful, heart-wrenching, and unforgettable.

My Thoughts War Torn by Kenneth E. Miller

When someone hears the term PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), most think of soldiers who were on the battle field. However, it also affects victims of war, violence, rape etc (any trauma).  Kenneth Miller examines all of these issues in ‘War Torn’.

Ken traveled to Guatemala to help evaluate a mental health intervention designed for indigenous children. He didn’t really find much there so there wasn’t a lot to actually evaluate.  He covers the history of war, genocide, and poverty of indigenous people. He found it hard to set up mental health programs for various reasons. He also traveled to Mexico and other countries with violet histories as well.

So, you are probably thinking that ‘War Torn’ is a depressing book with little hope.  That is not the case.  Yes, some of it is depressing.  How can it not be, reading about people’s situations with war, violence, loss, etc? You would have to be heartless.  However, also buried between the covers are pearls of hope, wisdom, humor, and resilience.

‘War Torn’ should be required reading for high school.  I know some parents want to shelter their teenagers from these realities but I think it is important to educate them on this issue.  They are the future and will have to continue to deal with and hopefully learn how to prevent the devastation so many people have had to endure.

‘War Torn’ is hard to put down and riveting, it read very fast. Kenneth Miller tells of his discoveries in a way that is not preachy.  His writing style is excellent and he really draws you in.  Highly recommended!

Written In the Ashes by K. Hollan Van ZandtWritten In the Ashes by K. Hollan Van Zandt

In the 5th century, Hannah, a sheep herder is taken from her father in Sinai and is taken into the slave trade to be sold in Alexandria, Egypt.  She was bought by Tarek, a young man, still living with his father, Alizar.  Alizar was a pagan and alchemist.  Tarek hid Hannah in his room but Alizar discovered her quite quickly and took her from Tarek and treated her kindly.

Alizar freed her from her irons had a doctor come and tend to her wounds that the slave traders inflicted.  He treated her very kindly and recognized her intelligence. She lived with him and Tarek but not not totally free from danger.

This was a time when Christianity was still in its infancy and there were men, called the Parabolani that went after anyone they believed were pagans.

Later, Alizar brought Hannah to the Great Library of Alexandria to sing and she becomes fast friends with Hypatia and other pagans who work there to preserve important art and scrolls.  Hannah decided to work with them and became comfortable in her enriched life. She also helped to unite the fractured pieces of the Emerald Tablet which was seen as the last hope for pagans to live in peace.

Full of adventure, danger, romance, history, and strong female characters, Written In the Ashes has something for just about everyone! I read and reviewed it back in 2012 as a self published novel and loved it.  Now it has been picked up by a new Harper Collins division, Legends.  It has been newly revised and edited and I still love it!  K. Hollan Van Zandt’s writing reminds of Michelle Moran, one of my favorite historical fiction authors.  Written In the Ashes remains one of my top five novels of all times!  It is a must read for historical fiction fans!

My Grandfather's Pants by Tegon MausMy Grandfather’s Pants by Tegon Maus

Jack Laskin is happy running the hardware store he inherited from his father and grandfather and his growing romance with his girlfriend Connie.  At least, that is what he thinks.  His mother and her octogenarian friend beg to differ.

It all began when Jack’s mother begs him to wear his grandfather’s old pants.  He finally gives in, to humor her but strange things start to happen.  As he does every week, he drives his mother and her friend to bingo.  An old woman makes a pass at him and calls him his grandfather’s name, Henry.  Connie is there with her brother, Robert who has brain damage.  Before Jack knows what hits him the three of them are fleeing from a group of thugs.  They jump in the car and it is revealed the Robert took a stuffed animal.  However, it’s not actually the stuffed animal the thugs are after; it’s the flash drive inside.

Then his mom and friends meddle in Jack’s love life and insist that just one woman will never be enough for him.  One woman was not enough for his father or grandfather.  Of course, this is way too much information for poor Jack to hear.

My Grandfather’s Pants is quite unique but includes Tegon Maus’s trademark quirky characters and humor.  Actually, I laughed throughout the book, often in tears.  This book is pure entertainment.  Tegon Maus is a master of his craft! Highly Recommended!

About Tegon MausMy Grandfathers Pants by Tegon Maus

Tegon Maus was raised pretty much the same as everyone else… devoted mother, strict father and all the imaginary friends he could conjure. Not that he wasn’t friendly, he just wasn’t “people orientated”. Maybe he lived in his head way more than he should have, maybe not. He liked machines more than people, at least he did until I met his wife.

The first thing he can remember writing was for her. For the life of him he can’t remember what it was about… something about dust bunnies under the bed and monsters in my closet. It must have been pretty good because she married him shortly after that. He spent a good number  of years chasing other dreams before he got back to writing.

It wasn’t a deliberate conscious thought, it was more of a stepping stone. His wife and himself had joined a dream interpret group and we were encouraged to write down our dreams as they occurred. “Be as detailed as you can,” we were told.

He was thrilled. If there is one thing he enjoys it’s making people believe him and he likes to exaggerate. Not a big exaggeration or an outright lie mind you, just a little step out of sync, just enough so you couldn’t be sure if it were true or not.  When he writes, he always write with the effort of “it could happen” very much in mind and nothing, he guarantees you, nothing, makes him happier.

He has consistently placed in the top 3 in 189 writing contest in a variety of genres and has been featured in magazines a couple of times to raise money for Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
