About Vanora Bennett
Vanora Bennett studied Russian at Oxford University and in the USSR. She began her career as a journalist at Reuters and went on to serve as the Moscow correspondent for the Los Angeles Times, winning a U.S. Overseas Press Club award for her writing on Russia. She now lives in Britain and has won the Orwell Prize for political writing for her work at The Times (UK). She is the author of four novels, including Portrait of an Unknown Woman, and two books of nonfiction.

So glad to see this book again! I ran across one day & loved the synopsis. Then, forgot to add to my TBR and couldn’t remember title to look up. Yay!! Thanks, Teddy!!
I have gotten half way through this book. I love how the author weaves real life characters into her story especially Rasputin, Felix Yusupov and her real life great-great uncle, Horace Wallick, the depictions of city life in St. Petersburg, the Faberge workshop and store and the bohemian clubs.What is really interesting is that the author actually learned how to make a violin, so she could write that into her novel.
although this book starts off slowly, it was a worthwhile read. The last half of the book moves quickly to an exciting finish.
