“Jonah” by Vince Lane is a work of literary fiction, a period piece written in accented vernacular. The story is staged in small town Louisiana in the 1930’s during the great depression.
An elderly black hobo “Jonah” shows up begging at the door of two ladies humble shotgun shack. Though they are poor, they feed him. So he returns the kindness doing a couple of odd jobs to repay them. They take a somewhat mystical trusting, and immediate liking to Jonah and offer him a job.
Throughout their time together many amazingly good outcomes happen for the ladies and their families as they are touched by turmoil after turmoil. The story unfolds a murder and cover up involving a prominent Judge who turns out to be responsible for the hit and run death of one of the ladies husbands.
There is tragedy and death involved, but in the end, the human spirit is triumphant when they realize, only after Jonah has left their midst, that he had been an angel sent to help them through some otherwise horrible times.
My Thoughts:
In the 1930’s depression, and elderly black man shows up in a small town in Louisiana. He shows up at the shack of two women and begs for food. To repay them he does a couple odd jobs for them but the soon see his worth and ask him to stay. For room and board, he continues to do odd jobs for them.
Before he happens to their shack, he saw a horrific hit and run which becomes the center of the story.
Historical in setting ‘Jonah’ has a bit that will appeal to many. It is historical fiction, crime mystery, war, and a hint of supernatural. There is a lot to love and I did love it. There was one confusing part in the book. There was a war with Germany that took place and it wasn’t clear to the reader, what war. The only war I know of around the time that involved Germany was the Spanish Civil War and it was too early to be the start of World War II. Even though this book is fiction, I think a war should be explain in a historical piece. Even a footnote at the end with an author explanation of how he may have changed the dates of a war to fit with the story. Apart for that, this was a riveting story that I highly recommend.
4/5
I received the ebook version for my honest opinion.
About Vince Lane:
Vince Lane has been writing most of his life, he first began seriously writing literary material around 1980. At the time he was a musician, singer/songwriter, poet, and professional entertainer living and working in Los Angeles, California.
As a writer Vince Lane has always maintained an unabashed style, paying little if any attention to convention. Unlike many writers, he has never settled down into any particular genre having written sci-fi, horror, supernatural, literary, mystery, action adventure, justice, and experimental fiction in iambic pentameter.
“I have enjoyed writing what I like, what I want, the way I want, and I stay true to that artistic freedom to this day.”- Vince Lane

Teddy, is this one open to US only or international? It sounds a bit like to Kill a Mockingbird. I like books set in this time period.
Denise, it is open internationally and is for the ebook. It didn’t remind me of ‘To Kill a Mocking Bird’ really but is still really good.

One really has to hand it to this writer…or at least I do, based on the content of your review, Teddy. Please pardon the originally unintentional pun: this strikes me as an incredibly novel storyline. I wonder how the author generates such loaded plots filled with compelling elements. Do you know if he’s had any formal training, or is his fiction writing all self-taught, as it were? It sounds like the latter given his refreshing unwillingness to fit his ideas into any genre/publishing industry box. Cheers, Kara S
