In August 2012 I decided to go down the self publish route. With sites like Lulu.com; Createspace; Smashwords; Kindle Direct; self publishing is now so easy, and cost nothing. I now have all six of my novels self published under my brand PHOENIX. I have full control over the book content, the cover, promotion, publicity, and, of course, I don’t share the royalties with anyone. The promoting is a full time job, but it has to be done. All in all, and thanks to my friends and supporters on Facebook and Twitter I am glad I made that decision.
So that’s it then, decision made, you are going to self publish. So how do you do it? It really couldn’t be simpler.
First let’s consider the paperback. Decide what size you would like your Paperback to be. I use A5. Set the Page Layout on your word processor (I use Microsoft WORD) to the size you require. Type up your novel. I use Times New Roman, 11 point. Page Layout – Margins Top 1.9cms; bottom 1.9 cms; inside 1.27 cms; outside 1.9 cms; gutter 0.89 cms; Mirror margins. Once completed you can then submit that WORD document directly to Lulu.com or Createspace. There is no charge for getting published. There is, of course, a charge to purchase the actual books. (I have used both. In my opinion Lulu.com produces the better product, but they are slightly more expensive to purchase). Both Lulu and Createspace make your work available on Amazon. Follow the simple on-line instructions to get published. You will be asked to upload the file containing the novel. An ISBN number will be allocated (again at no charge). With regard to the cover you will be required to upload a wraparound cover. You will be advised as to the sizes required. And that is that. Your paperback will be ready to purchase from Lulu or Createspace instantly; and on amazon 6-8 weeks later.
Now to the ebook – there are many sites where it is possible to produce an ebook for Kindle, Nook, Kobo, and all kinds of ebook formats. I started with Kindle Direct Publishing – KDP, but, through using Draft2Digital, I also have books available on Noon, Kobo, and iTunes.
Once again it is simple to do, and at no charge. Use the same WORD document you used for the paperback. Follow the simple on-line instructions. Upload your cover – for ebook use you will only require a front cover – The ebook will be available within 24 hours on Amazon.

A word on ISBN numbers – if you have a number of books, and you wish to make them available in several different places, you would best be advised to purchase your own from Nielson – the cost is £118.50 for ten.

So after months, if not years, of toil and trouble, your epic is at long last completed, and is ready to be released on the world. You have had the good fortune to find a publisher prepared to bring it into print for you, or you have gone down the Self Published route. Either way it is there, for sale. Pretty soon you will realise that writing the book was perhaps the easiest part of the process. Even getting published wasn’t that difficult, especially if you do it yourself. With Lulu.com; Createspace; Kindle Direct Publishing; and several other outlets on the Internet, publishing is easy, and at no cost.
Now comes the difficult part, selling your book. Nobody is going to buy it because they’ve never heard of it. So you have now got to publicise, promote, and publicise, and promote and …… until you make a nuisance of yourself. And then you have to publicise and promote some more.
I can’t remember the exact figures but I was once told that every month 20000 new books hit the shelves (virtual or otherwise). That is some competition.
OK so what do you do to publicise your opus, especially if funds are tight and you can’t really afford a half page spread in the Times. Well there are some things you can do. Firstly let your local library know, give them a copy. The might be prepared to arrange an event in the library. I had one a year or so ago. It wasn’t the event of the century, but I sold about twenty books, and handed out some leaflets, and book markers. Tell your local newspaper, they might be prepared to publish something about you. I mentioned earlier about leaflets and book markers. Well apart from them I have business cards relating to my books, I have sticky labels that I place on every letter that I send out. This is all effective advertising that costs nothing. And one other thing, if you have more than one book. Make sure that details of all of your books are included in the last few pages of ALL of your books.

So, Who Am I?

I was born in 1943 in Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire. I currently live in Essex with my wife, Margaret, and my daughter Elizabeth. And not forgetting Missy, the cat who adopted us, and considered that we were worthy enough to live with her. For many years I was a Chartered Surveyor in local government. I was a Senior Project Manager with the Greater London Council from 1971 until it was closed down in 1986. I then set up my own surveying practice, retiring in 2008.
I suppose like many others I had always thought how good it would be to write a novel, but I could never think of a good enough plot. My first novel, The Kammersee Affair, published in 2006, was inspired by a holiday in the Austrian lake district. We were staying in Grundlsee. The next lake, Toplitzsee, was used by the German Navy during the war to test rockets, and torpedoes. As the war came to an end many items were hidden in the lake – millions of UK pounds, and US dollars, in counterfeit currency; jewellery stolen from the holocaust victims; and weapons. There were also rumours of gold bullion being hidden in that lake. Despite extensive searches the gold was never found. In my book, however, it is found, only in the next lake, Kammersee.
The books that followed, The Mackenzie File, The Marinski Affair, and Epidemic, all feature Tom Kendall, a down to earth private detective, and were originally published by Raider Publishing in New York. My fifth book, A Killing In The City, another featuring Tom Kendall, was originally published by Night Publishing. In August 2012 I decided to go down the self published route, and formed my own publishing brand PHOENIX. All five novels have now been published on PHOENIX. A sixth novel The Thackery Journal was published on 8 August 2013.
I am currently working on two other novels featuring Tom Kendall, and I have made a tentative start on an Adventure novel.

Boy have I been lucky!  Last year I posted a review of a set of sheets that I had bought through a internet coupon site.  You can read my review here.  They were quite disappointing.  Several month later I was contacted by email asking if I would like to try a newer companies sheets instead.  Of course, I couldn’t refuse an offer for free sheets so I accepted.  They were Butterfly Dream Luxury sheets and boy were they luxurious!  See my review here.

Recently, another sheet company read my review of the not so favorable sheets and offered me another set for review.  I still have and use my Butterfly Dream sheets but how could I refuse?  Besides, it’s nice to have two sets of nice sheets, I’m sure you will all agree.

The sheets I received this time for review are called Comfy Snug Draw String Sheets.  The difference with these sheets, is that the fitted sheet has a draw string, so is guaranteed to stay on the bed.

Here is how Comfy Snug describe their sheets on their website (you can read their full statement there):

Since bed sheets have existed, the problem of keeping bed sheets on the bed has also existed. Early on there was the flat bed sheet and the term “hospital corner” became widely used. This term obviously adapted from sheet use in hospitals on hospital beds where tight bed sheets are a key requirement in the comfort of their patients. Then elastic was added to the edge of the bed sheet. This added convenience as hospital corners required that the bed sheet be tucked quite far under the mattress. Elastic bed sheets were acceptable for the most part but did not stay in place quite as well as a large bed sheet tucked under the mattress.

There have also been many drawstring bed sheet designs with more than 12 previous patents. The problem with the previous drawstring designs is that the hems that hold the drawstring are straight. Where the “Comfy-Snug” design is curved on the sides pre-loading the edge of the bed sheet, the previous straight designs do not provide this distribution of force along the sides. With the straight hems, the mattress gripping action of the fitted sheet is mostly concentrated at and near the corners of the mattress. Also the gathering of the corners causes the drawstring to be bound up in the corners, drastically increasing the friction within the hem of the bed sheet. With this extra friction in the corners, it becomes impossible to tighten the sheet all the way around the mattress. With the “ARC-EDGE” curved hem the drawstring avoids a sharp turn at the corner providing a smooth, unbound course around the mattress allowing the bed sheet to be much tighter than any other drawstring bed sheet design.

My Thoughts:

I have always had problems with sheet corners coming up in my bed.  I turn a lot in my sleep and sheets don’t always cooperate.  I have tried bed sheet suspenders but they haven’t worked out very well and were a hassle.

Comfy Snug Draw String Sheets solved that problem!  Bill and I have put these sheets through rigorous testing (blush) and the fitted sheet has not budged!

Before I received the sheets however, I did have a concern.  I could not find anything on the website that told about the quality and thread count of these sheets.  The are made of Egyptian cotton, which implies high quality however, in my experience, that does not always mean high quality.  Once I received the sheets, I could tell that the had a high thread count.  That is important because then I knew they would not fall apart on me or pill up any time soon.

Egyptian cotton sheets are also suppose to have a satin like feel however, my experience is that they only feel that way until the first washing.  The Comfy Soft sheets were no exception to this.  They were satiny feeling out of the package but I always wash my sheets before their first use.  They felt like regular cotton sheets, once they made it to my bed.  No problem with that, really it what I expected.  However, comparing the comfort factor with the Butterfly Dream sheets there is little comparison.  The Butterfly Dream sheets are on usually soft on the skin. Where I can compare them is that the Comfy soft sheets stay on the bed.  There is a definite comfort factor in that too.  Waking up either tangled in your bottom sheet or on a bare mattress is certainly not comfortable.

I would also be remiss if I did not mention price.  According to the Comfy Snug website, a set of queen size sheets is only $79.  While a set of queen size Butterfly Dream sheets will set you back $125.  Both U.S. currency.

What I would love to see is the draw string technology from the Comfy Snug applied to the extra soft luxurious feel of the Butterfly Dream sheets.  However, until that happens, I will have to alternate between the two types of comfort.  I certainly do recommend Comfy Snug if you want a nice sheet that will stay snugly on your mattress!

4/5

I received this set of Comfy Snug Sheets for my honest review.  This is only my opinion, so why not try them out yourself?

Thanks to Robert Briganti of New Visions Products (Comfy Soft), I am giving away one bottom fitted Comfy Snug Draw String Sheet, a value of $47 U.S.  This giveaway is open to the U.S. only and ends on December 16, 2013

Today it is my pleasure to kick off the Tour for the adorable, The Christmas Cats Chase Christmas Rats by Constance Corcoran Wilson

Book Description:

Publisher: Quad City Books (October 22, 2013)
Genres: Children’s Picture Book, Christmas
Tour Dates: December, 2013
Available in: Print and ebook 32 pages, with Illustrations
The Christmas Cats Chase Christmas Rats is a Seuss-ical tale for young children which builds upon the moral of the first ChristmasCats book to once again teach children a valuable life lesson.
In this second Christmas Cats adventure the lesson to be learned is:  In life, always keep an open mind.  Don’t accept stereotypes as true or let the unfounded opinions of others prevent you from finding out the truth for yourself. We all need to act without prejudice and learn to accept each other as individuals.
The Christmas Cats learn that rats, too, should be judged as individuals. Another message: all of us should try to help others.
Written for the author’s four-year-old granddaughters, Ava and Elise Wilson, with the assistance of talented professional illustrator Gary McCloskey, The Christmas Cats continue to have adventures while attired in their familiar silly hats from Book One (The Christmas Cats in Silly Hats).
Learning to accept others in a non-judgmental, open-minded fashion is a lesson we all must learn. If children can internalize this behavior while young, learning to help others and to do good works, the world will be a better place.
My Thoughts:

Christmas isn’t my thing but occasionally I will read a short story or children’s Christmas related book.
The Christmas Cats Chase Christmas Rats is such an adorable and fun book.  I wish I had children to share it with because this book must be shared.  The illustrations by award winning artist, Gary McKluskey pop with color and are gorgeous!  The writing and pictures pair together seamlessly to tell a fun story with a moral on making judgement on others based on stereotypes.  This is actually book two of a series but both can stand alone.  The first book is The Christmas Cats in Silly Hats.
I highly recommend this picture book for children ages 3 and up and their parents!  If you are looking for a great Christmas gift for children, you just found it!
