Thanks to Connie Shaw of Sentient Publications, I am giving away one print copy of Escape From Communist Heaven.

Book Description:

Communist tanks roll through Viet Nguyen’s neighborhood when he is fourteen years old. As American helicopters retreat over the South China Sea, the American Embassy isn’t able to destroy secret files containing names of South Vietnamese Intelligence Officers. Viet’s father is one of them. Within days, the city is infiltrated with communist soldiers and spies.

Viet is arrested in the black market and becomes one of more than 300,000 people in labor camps spread across the jungles of Vietnam. Tens of thousands of these prisoners die of starvation, malaria and physical beatings. Determined not to be one of them, Viet uses the same rebelliousness and daring that led to his arrest to break free.

Based on a true story, this novel is about a teenager who makes some mistakes and faces the consequences during a dramatic period of history.

About Dennis W. Dunivan:

Born and raised in the Midwest, Dennis Dunivan graduated with a Journalism degree from the University of Missouri. During an overseas work program, he met Viet Nguyen in London. After hearing Viet’s tales about escaping from a communist prison camp, Dennis decided it was a story the world needed to hear. He moved to Viet’s neighborhood, which was a Vietnamese community on London’s East End. This is where the foundation of Escape from Communist Heaven was formed during months of interviews with Viet and some less extensive interviews with other refugees.

In 1994, before it was feasible for Dennis to conduct research in Vietnam, he was sponsored by U.S.A.I.D. on a mission to help Ukrainian farmers commercialize their businesses. This gave him firsthand experience in a country that was transitioning out of communism. Several years later, he finished the novel after travelling to Saigon and through the Mekong Delta of southern Vietnam. He currently lives in Colorado with his wife and three rebellious boys. Although thousands of miles and the Atlantic Ocean have separated them for many years, Viet has always remained his best friend.
