Thanks to Lura Dold of The Albee Agency, I am giving away one copy of Sparky and the Dipshit.
Book Description:
That Great Bend summer of 1961, when I was sixteen, the world was a Kansas prairie that went on forever. It was a time and a place when a boy of imagination seeking glory [and I was such a boy] could spin a summer of stolen freedoms into such high jinks, such high adventure that such a boy might be in danger of losing some vital part of himself when he cut the strings and moved on. Over the years, I have revisited that magic summer in stops and starts; shared it with friends, then again with my children, then again with my grandchildren. Shook out a sleeve. Emptied some pocket of its boyhood treasures. Anecdotes. Patches. Now something in me wants to see that ragged coat whole against the sky, like some renegade kite caught in a whip of a Kansas wind.
About Rod Russell-Ides:
Some things haven’t changed that much for Rod Russell-Ides since that 16th summer so vividly described in his new memoir, Sparky And The Dipshit. It’s always been about the girl and the music. After boarding out at the boys-only Choate School in Connecticut, he chose not to follow his brother, “Sparky”, to Princeton, which was all-male back then. Instead Rod attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas where there were lots of pretty women.
An accomplished musician and songwriter, the Austin Chronicle called his music, “so well written and performed – as talented as anyone picking up a Grammy.” With miles of country songs penned, Rod and his playwright wife, Isabella Russell-Ides, co-wrote the award winning musical, Nashville Road, produced by Center Stage in Austin, Texas.
A master gardener and designer, Rod founded Signature Gardens more than thirty years ago. His spectacular showcase gardens have been featured in Austin Home and Garden, Best of Dallas in D Magazine, Southern Living Magazine, Texas Highways as well as many professional design and build trade magazines.
He and his wife, Isabella, live in Dallas, Texas where they are currently planning the 2013 nationwide book tour for Sparky And The Dipshit.
