Book Description:
Based on the fascinating, but little-known history of Jewish pioneers on the Great Plains, THE LITTLE BRIDE is a subtle, elegantly written and compelling read about a 16-year-old mail-order bride bound for America whose dreams of leaving poverty behind, are quickly dashed when she arrives in the desolate plains of “Sodokota” in the 1880s.  
Her husband Max turns out to be nearly penniless, more than twice her age, rigidly Orthodox and recently abandoned by his first wife.  Instead of a grand house, she finds herself living in a one-room sod hut with Max and his two teenage sons.  The family has signed on to the Am Olam movement— a little known Jewish-American experiment in the 1880s and 90s in which wealthier, assimilated Jews decided to “help” the poorer immigrants who were flooding many American cities at that time by giving them the money and tools they needed to head West— and is now struggling to farm rocky land and grow the food they need to get through the coming winter. 
THE LITTLE BRIDE is an immigrant story, a love story, and a coming-of-age story about a young woman caught in a world she is unprepared for, forced to draw on strengths she barely knows she has.

About Anna Solomon:

Anna Solomon received her MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, and is a two-time winner of the Pushcart Prize.  She is a former reporter and producer for National Public Radio.  Solomon lives in Providence , RI with her family.  The Little Bride is her first novel.
