Book Description:
DEWEY is the heartwarming story of Dewey Readmore Books, the beloved library cat of Spencer, Iowa, as told by his owner and companion of nineteen years, Vicki Myron, the librarian who found him on a frigid January morning when he was abandoned as a kitten in the book drop slot. It is also the story of a remarkable small town, which burned down at the beginning of the Depression, only to rebuild itself, and which was almost shuttered during the farm crisis of the 1980s, before regrouping and rededicating itself to small town American values. Dewey’s local charm and worldwide fame became a symbol of hope for this recovering town. Through Dewey’s antics, we come to know and love many of the colorful and inspiring people of Spencer. But perhaps the most inspiring person in Spencer is Vicki Myron herself, a single mother who survived the bankruptcy of her family farm and working in a box factory to put two of her brothers through college to become one of the leaders of the Iowa library system. Dewey is one lovable, roguish cat who managed to transform an entire town and inspire people across the globe.
Coming up on Blog Talk Radio, a Live Interview w/ Vicki Myron, author of DEWEY! Be sure to tune in on Friday May 15 at 10am (unknown time zone).

When I was growing up we had a cat named Simba. She was beautiful and she was also goofy! She loved to lay on her back and have us rub/scratch her tummy and if we dare stopped would reach out with her paw to remind us of what we should be doing lol
ahh, I miss her
This would be lovely to win, Thanks

My daughter’s cat grooms (licks) the face of the family dog. I find this amazing from the POV of both of the pets.

I am allergic to cats, and ironically, every experience I have had with cats is the same: they seem to sense I can’t touch them, and they uniformly come up to me and jump in my lap!

I feel like a house is not a home without a cat or two. We currently have 2 cats-a grouchy old man cat called Simon and a fat female tabby named Jennyanydots because she has “tiger stripes and leopard spots.” We call her Jenny for short.
In college and during the early years of my marriage we had a beautiful marmalade tom named Eli-short for TS Eliot. He was the sweetest cat ever.

I had a “watch cat” once. He was as good as any watch dog. He would run circles around our baby if he felt that there was anything to worry about!

An experience? I guess I’ll have to choose… I have two cats, one a little girl cat, and one a boy. I chose the boy, and he’s become really attached to me. He curls up around my head every night, it’s amazing to fall asleep with purrs surrounding me.

So many cat stories to choose from… In the first apartment I had to myself, right after college, I had a clawfoot bathtub (no shower, just a tub). While I took my bath every night (an hour-long soak during which I read whatever book struck my fancy), Kelsey would run and slide down the hardwood floor in the hallway. (I never got to see this, just hear it.)
But most of all, she loved my bathtub. She’d jump in and chase her tail–she loved the sound she made in the tub. But chasing her tail in such a small space might not have been such a good idea; every now and then I’d hear a ceramic thunk, and know she’d hit her head against the side of the tub.
I only lived in that apartment for a year, but I have a theory that she suffered an acquired brain injury from her days of chasing her tail in the tub; a few years ago, she was diagnosed with epilepsy, something the brain-injured frequently develop.

I would love to listen to this on audio.
When I was a baby we had a Siamese cat named Samantha. She was my Mom’s, but when I was born she slept right by my crib and watched over me. She lived to be 13.
My sister’s poor old cat, Tippy, is 20! He can hardly see and has lost most of his teeth but is the sweetest old thing.

Our cat Oreo used to jump on the deck railing and look in the window hoping to get our attention so we would let him in at kibble time. If we didn’t open the door fast enough to suit him, he would go to the other railing and scratct at the doorbell. He soon figured out that made us open the door immediately. Smart kitty! Sounds like a great contest, enter me please. florida982002[at]yahoo[dot]com
Our rescue cat has survived an international move, new baby and reconstructive knee surgery. She’s a real trooper and we love the dickens out of her, and it’s nice to see her getting used to being adored by our daughter. I’d love to listen to this audiobook.

i love my cat, even if he does like to bring me the kitchen sponge in the middle of the night
During the coldest night of the year this past winter, a kitten stepped out of our new condo’s elevator at 3 am! We all just moved to this new building and didn’t know each other that well. We were waiting for the plumber to check our boiler room and were flabbergasted where the kitten had come from and if it was a pet or feral because she had no collar! We found her a place to stay for the night. Sure enough, her owner was looking for her the next day.

When I was a young girl, I brought home a kitten that a friend at school gave me. I loved that kitty so much and then it met with an unfortunate accident on the farm we lived on and my dad had to put it out of its misery. I think I cried for about a year and I still think of that kitty once in awhile.
No need to enter me, just posted this on Win A Book.
My co-librarian takes care of a bunch of feral cats that (when they were kittens) were dropped off at the school. She’s got a summer feeding schedule and has gotten them spayed/neutered and shots and everything. It’s crazy fun!

After I graduated college I was living in a basically empty house that my mom was trying to sell. I came home one day to find a note on the door stating that my new cat was inside. I was thinking – I don’t have a litter box, cat food, etc. So I walk in and my mom had bought all that and left a cat for me because she didn’t want me to be in the house all by myself. She got a little more than she bargained for when I told her that I thought the cat was pregnant… sure enough she had kittens under my bed!

Annie, I haven’t met many cats that like their belly scratched but my Amanda does to. Simba sounds like she was a lovely cat.
Linda, that’s so cute!
MJ, I’m glad you get visitation.
Rhapsady, that’s what cats do! LOL!
Well Mannered, I so agree! Your cats sound lovely even grouchy.
Neas, a watch cat, so sweet!
Chris, I find purring so soothing.
Jenna, a lot of cats love the tub as long as there isn’t water in it. LOL! That is so sad about the epilepsy. I hope it’s controlled.
Kitten, I wish we had a library cat here. That must be so cool for kids who don’t get to have cats at home. My Tina was always jealous when I came home with other pets scents on me. So far, Amanda doesn’t seem to mind.
Carey, Samantha and Tippy sound wonderful. Tina was 19.5 when she died. She was blind the last year as well but she got around just fine. I miss her so!
Kaye, that is so funny that he figured out to ring the door bell!
PMF, Tina moved here to Canada with me from Minnesota. She was also a rescue.
Katrina,LOL! Amanda likes to tell me that her daddy has left for work every morning at 6 am!
Gaby, that’s such a cute story. I’m glad her family found her. BTW, cats don’t have owners, they own you. LOL!
Carlene, sounds like she was quite the tease. LOL!
Wanda, that’s so sad. I’m sorry you had to go through that.
Terri, It takes extra dedication to care for feral cats. That’s great!
Angela, oh no! I hope you found good homes for the kittens.
I’m more of a dog person so the only experience I’ve had with a cat is the burmese we had growing up. She was very aloof and every time the doorbell rang she hid in case it was my friends coming over – I don’t think she liked being carried around all the time by little kids. So I always remember the two or three times in her whole life that she voluntarily came over and sat with me on the couch!
I remember hearing about Dewey in the news so I’d love to hear the whole story.

When I was growing up we had a daschund named Ollie and a black tabby cat named Blackie. Well Blackie used to get so annoyed with Ollie and she would knock his doggie toys away from him while he was playing with them and then go back to washing her claws like she hadn’t done anything really rude! But he never seemed to mind for some reason 🙂

Canadian Giveaways,
Some cats are more social than others. Too bad yours wasn’t more social. My cat Amanda loves to be with us and when the doorbell rings she likes to greet guests at the door. I love dogs too.
I have many experiences with my cat, Boots. Boots is a talking cat. When my husband or I ask her a question, she meows yes or no. The tone of her meowing no is very different from her meowing yes or her meowing I don’t know. Boots is really smart.

I have been dying to read this book. Thanks for the giveaway.

I never had a cat growing up. While in university, my neighbours had a cat named Kramer. He was exactly like Kramer off of Seinfeld (his namesake). He was crazy and skitterish but just so loveable.

We had a cat that thought he was a guard dog. He chased two construction workers out of our house and they refused to come back unless we provided safe passage! I cherish that letter!

The first cat that I ever had was named Mitch. The reason for this was that he had a little gotee and it reminded me of Mitch Miller. I loved Mitch Miller.

When I was growing up we had a very large cat named Gimpy. Have no idea how she got that name but she absolutely loved my mother. She would follow her everywhere even out for walks. She really was a character.
roylsue(at)telpage(dot)net
It’s not midnight yet and I live in EST, it’s only 10:03??? Oh, well, maybe I can win this book somewhere else.
roylsue(at)telpage(dot)net
Sue maybe to make is more clear I should have said 11:59 PM May 15th. At midnight it turns to the next day, the 16th, which is when it was over.
Gimpy does sound like a character. Amanda follows me every where too.
