This is a weekly event that is hosted by Miz Books at Should Be Reading.
This is a weekly event to post about books I’ve discovered. This is the first time I have participated.
I only have one book to share about today, but it sounds so good.
My Friday find is :
One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd by Jim Fergus by Jim Fergus
Description:
“One Thousand White Women is the story of May Dodd and a colorful assembly of pioneer women who, under the auspices of the U.S. government, travel to the western prairies in 1875 to intermarry among the Cheyenne Indians. The covert and controversial “Brides for Indians” program, launched by the administration of Ulysses S. Grant, is intended to help assimilate the Indians into the white man’s world. Toward that end May and her friends embark upon the adventure of their lifetime. Jim Fergus has so vividly depicted the American West that it is as if these diaries are a capsule in time.
Debbie of Debbie’s World brought my attention to this book. To read her review, go here.

I read that book. I quite liked it, but I have seen other people hate it!
WOW!!! Thanks for mentioning this. This sounds fascinating; I bet I would really like this. This is definitely going on my wish list. Great find!
My book club read this book and we thought it a bit strange…I did finish the whole thing but wouldn’t have if it hadn’t been a selection for book club.
I have had this book on my TBR list for ages.
Kailana and Clair,
I hope I enjoy it despite it’s short comings. Sometimes I get so excited when I hear the premise of a book but then don’t like it in the end. Sometimes I do. I know it’s one I want to try.
Beth, I thought it sounded fascinating too.
Marg,
I hope it’s not on my TBR for ages but could quite possibly be. I have over 1700 books on my TBR right now. LOL! (My shameful admission).
I guess it depends on how you define your TBR pile. I have 50+ books out from the library, a couple of hundred books that I own but haven’t read yet, and then a spreadsheet that lists over 2500 titles that I would like to get to someday, so I do feel your pain!
Ooh great find! I might have to add this to my list!
Ladytink, if you read it please share your thoughts. Thanks!
Oh! This was one of my Best Reads of 2004! My shelf is holding another one of his: The Wild Girl. Hopefully I’ll be reading that this year.
Joy, you will have to let me know your thought on The Wild Girl when you read it.
Oh dear! I was Google searching for reviews of 1000 White Women since my book club just read it – discussion next week – my review to follow – and I have to admit I’m so surprised at how many people seemed to have loved it! Frankly I found it written with broad, sweeping stereotypes and with a tone that was paternalistic (maternalistic, really), patronizing, and anachronistic! Although I admit I loved hating it while I read it…my boyfriend got an earful every time I put the book down. If you’ve gotten around to reading it, Teddy Rose (or anyone else), I’d love to see what you have to say about it.
Kate, I haven’t read it yet. I have seen some mixed reviews but the subject matter is interesting to me.
Pinned this one too.
