Fell Flat
It is 1962. The story opens with Edward and Florence just married and in their honeymoon sweet eating dinner. They are both nervous, as can be expected of two virgins. Florence is actually petrified. “Where he merely suffered conventional first-night nerves, she experienced a visceral dread, a helpless disgust as palpable as seasickness.”
Edward had denied himself any “self-pleasure” for a week so that he wouldn’t fail to perform on that all important night. However, once the event starts, it doesn’t go well.
That pretty much sums up the story, of course I left out spoilers, which I figured out from the first few pages. The plot is very little and there is not a whole lot to the story. I’m not one to complain that something didn’t “blow up”. I don’t need heart pounding action but I wish something more would have happened. The story was just too flat and one dimensional for me.
That said, I do like Ian McEwan’s writing style. He really knows how to write about and capture emotions. I do have other McEwen books on my to-be-read list and do plan to read them.
3/5

The name sounds familiar, but maybe I’m confusing him with someone else. What else has he written?
Meg,
He’s written Atonement, which was made into a movie. That’s what he is most famous for. I haven’t read the book yet but I loved the movie.
HiTeddy….I loved the movie Atonement but must reread the book one day. I think I missed a lot!! I very much enjoyed his Amsterdam; it was full of British humor (subtle) and I was surprised that I did like it. Linda/Mostly Books
I’m hoping to read my first McEwan book in 2009. This one never looked interesting to me though. Fussy, aren’t I? 🙂
Lezlie
I admit that I’ve read only one McEwan book — I really didn’t like any of the characters and so have had no desire to read more of his work.
I didn’t read Atonement, but I thought the movie was only so-so.
Sorry this one fell flat for you, Teddy…I read it for a discussion group which I think helped me appreciate the novel more (because the discussion was great!). McEwan’s writing is not for everyone…he is one of those authors, I think, that tends to polarize readers.
O I am glad I’m not the only one who didn’t really like On Chesil Beach. It fell flat for me too. Although I LOVE Atonement so I’m not writing him off yet as an author. Great review!
This one fell flat for me, too, but I liked Atonement. I think I’m going to try reading another of his and see which way I really feel about him.
I really want to give McEwan a try, but I think this is a the book I’ve read the most mixed reviews about. So it’s probably a good idea to start with something else.
I read this too, and reviewed it on Amazon. My impression was similar to your own — just not quite enough. I will read more of his work someday.
Linda in Maine
Linda, Amsterdam is another one of his books I’ve had my eye on reading.
Lezlie, knowing your tastes I would guess that you would want to try a different one of his books. Although, Wendy Liked this one a lot more than I did and we agree on books most of the time. Hm..
Beth,
Sorry the book you read didn’t work out. Too bad you didn’t like the movie version of Atonement.
Wendy,
I thought I would like this one more than I did because you and I have simular tastes in books and usually agree. Oh well.
I can see how a discussion would help with this book. I think I would have liked it better if he would have started more towards the beginning of their relationship. Even though I know that’s been done to death.
Amanda,
It is reassuring when you find other people who agree with you isn’t it? I always feel like I missed something if at least one person doesn’t agree with my point of view.
Megan, I do plan to read Atonement.
Nymeth, there are quite a few pople who liked this book better than me, so maybe you would like it. It’s hard to say.
Linda,
For some reason I thought you liked this one more. Maybe I’ve go my “Lindas” mix up for this book. LOL!
Teddy,This book fell flat for me as well. I did read Atonement and felt that the writing and story wer
much richer and though provoking.
Sorry it didn’t work for you. I wasn’t crazy about Atonement, so I haven’t had the desire to read any of his other work.
I enjoyed Atonement but haven’t really heard good reviews on this one, so I think I will steer clear of it. I must admit that the subject matter turned me off right away. Thanks for the honest review.
Bonnie, I plan to give Atonement a try. I really liked the movie.
Bermudaonion, sorry you didn’t care for Atonement. Since I liked the movie, I thought I would give it a try.
Jo Jo, it wasn’t at the top of my list but it was given to me a long time ago so I thought I’d give it a try. Besides it waS ON MY TBR Challenge list and I needed a book I could read in a short time frame to complete the challenge. This book fit the bill. LOL!
I’m going to read this fairly soon, as I’m working my way through the 2007 Booker shortlist, but I’m not looking forward to it. I didn’t enjoy Amsterdam, and I think he’s going to be one of those authors I just don’t get!
Jackie, I look forward to seeing your comments on this book once you’ve read it. I hope you enjoy it more than I did!
Thanks for the review Teddy. Might give this one a miss.
Alaine,
It didn’t do much for me, but a few other people really liked it.
I read this, too, and my reaction to it was the same as yours. I love his writing, though.
I liked his Atonement.
Am looking forward to reading his The Children Act.
I read this too. While I usually review every book I read, I just didn’t know what to say about this one.I thing what you said, “fell flat,” sums up the way I felt about this book.
But I, too, love his writing. I own many Ian McEwan books. They’re keepers.
