Original and Refreshing!
Susie Salmon is a 14-year-old dead girl looks down from heaven and tells us about her murder and her observations about her family. She observes her family struggle to come to terms and cope with her death. We see her younger sister grow into a woman and her father trying to bring Susie’s killer to justice. We also learn about what her own heaven looks like and what it is like to be dead from her perspective.
Sounds a bit weird, right? That’s what I thought years ago when I picked up this book. I read about 15 pages and thought, “this is stupid, how can a dead person narrate a book. Then I ran across the audio book version a couple weeks ago. I thought to myself, “why not give it another more fair try and try to see why other readers like it so much.” Boy, am I glad I did. Once I got past the description of the murder, I really enjoyed this book. It’s not as depressing as one would think. It was suspenseful, heartwarming, and humorous.
The performer on the audio version is Alyssa Bresnahan. She is excellent and really enhances the novel.
Susie Salmon captured my heart. I highly recommend this book and can hardly wait to see what Alice Sebold writes next!

Teddy, I read this years ago and really liked it. It is bizzare. I’ve recommended it to friends and it took them a while to get into, but they were always glad they read it.
I read this years ago and since then have seen so many bloggers say they hated it. I thought I was weird because I loved it.
I enjoyed this book as well! Nice review..
I have read many great reviews on this book. Of course, I still haven’t read it!! Glad you liked it!
Come out and play! You’ve been tagged!

I can totally relate to your friends Kristy, I’m glad we all stuck with it. It was quite rewarding.
Chris, I wonder if the bloggers who hated it read the whole thing or were like me on their first attempt.
Thanks Samantha!
I think you would like it Stephanie.
Thanks for the tag Jill. I’ll have to give this one some thought, stay tuned.
This is Sebold’s best book. I read it 5-6 years ago and highly enjoyed it. I would like to reread it. I also liked her book Lucky and would recommend it. It’s a memoir of the aftermath and healing process of being raped. Her newest book is The Almost Moon which is a waste of time. I don’t know what happened but this book just didn’t live up to all the hype it received prior to being published. Skip it.
Maw Books,
I heard others say that Almost Moon is a waste of time also. It’s too bad, because she is a darn good writer. I added Luck to my TBR.
Good to know it’s not all sad
I’ve read it, but didn’t like it, sorry to say.
I read this book years ago and loved it. Yes I agree with you it’s not entirely sad. It intrigued me and kept my attention throughout the entire story. A friend at work who does not read very often had borrowed me the book because she thought it was an interesting read. I don’t know if you ever heard of The Bright Forever by Martin Lee. The only thing in common the two books have is the two characters are both deceased girls. I had bought the Bright Forever when Schwartz Book Stores in Wisconsin were still open. The cover drew my attention. If you did not read The Bright Forever I recommend it .
sounds like an unusual book
Pinned this one.
This one was hard for me to finish…but I read it years ago and maybe it was “me” at that time. I’ve often wondered if I read it again, if I would feel the same.
