A hot summer beach—
A marriage gone wrong—
Daring eyes and daring love, betrayed by a secret passion.

Kim feels trapped in a loveless marriage to a jealous, wealthy older man. He blames her for crippling him in an auto accident that he himself caused. Kim strives to make the marriage work, despite her husband’s blame, verbal abuse, and bitterness. When she meets a wickedly handsome man on the beach, she fights not to want him, not to want a new life and not to fall in love.

But Derek is seductive and irresistible—a former soldier who has recently come to town to start a landscaping business. Kim falls hard for him, as he does to her. Although Kim wants a divorce, her husband finds out about their affair and devises a plot to destroy them both. They must struggle to survive a web of lies, deceit and dangerous passion.

Praise Other Side of Summer

“5 stars, another great, emotional read from this author!! I was hooked the minute I started reading it. Be warned you will need a box of tissues to read. I really love this author!”- Melissa Mendoza, Anne & Melissa’s Book Love

“I found this to be a satisfying, well developed warm and enriching read. It gave me a lot to think about. I will recommend it to readers of both genders, age high school and up, who like substance in their novels.”-Laura Reading, Laura’s Interests

“The book is more than just a contemporary romance – it’s a family saga, a book about the bonds of family, about love (not just between partners but between parents and children), about life and the choices we make. It’s heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. The writing is hauntingly beautiful, and the author has a talent for crafting believable characters. An excellent book, and I look forward to reading more by this author.”- Majanka, I Heart Reading

“Great story, I give it five stars.  I thought the book was wonderful and emotional, and I loved the writing style and how the words flowed.  I was happy to fantasize about being there to watch the story unfold.  I loved this story; took me back to my young beach days.”-Diana’s Book Reviews

Excerpt Daring Summer by Elyse Douglas

Detective Saunders’ eyes were flat but direct.  “But you did believe your husband was trying to kill himself because, as you stated in the police report, he thought you were having an affair with another man.  Isn’t that right?”

Kim shook her head.  “Detective Saunders… if you read further in the report, you’ll see that I also said I was not having an affair.”

Detective Holder slanted her a look.  “But according to your statement, you did believe that Mr. Maxwell did try to kill himself because he believed you were having an affair.  Is that right?  He had even produced photographs.”

Kim’s jaw stiffened.  “So what are you both getting at?  Just get to the point.  Do you believe Ben tried to poison himself?  Kill himself?”

Detective Sanders’ gaze was acute and sharp.  “Mr. Maxwell was either trying to kill himself or, as I said, someone else was poisoning him.  Dr. Klein believes he was taking, or was being administered, low doses of cyanide over a period of weeks.  This would account for the poison having a more gradual onset of symptoms.  Dr. Klein also stated that, conversely, an acute ingestion would have a dramatic, rapid onset, immediately affecting the heart and causing a sudden collapse.  According to Dr. Klein’s statement, it would logically seem that if Mr. Maxwell wanted to kill himself, he would most likely have taken some kind of pill or taken a more aggressive dose of the poison.  So we are looking into all possibilities.  We are trying to ascertain the facts, and one of those possibilities is that someone was poisoning your husband.”

Kim blinked with anxiety.  “Poisoning him?  Someone?”  Her words seemed to drop into the floor.  Her eyes searched the walls for answers.

“Our investigation is just in the beginning stages, Kim.  We are hoping you can help us… help us straighten all this out.  I’m sorry to have to ask you these questions at a time like this.”

Kim gazed at him without focus.

The room filled with a long, chilly silence.  The two detectives kept their firm attention on Kim, who was struggling to process the explosion of information.

“It doesn’t make sense,” Kim said.  “It just doesn’t make any sense.”

Detective Saunders rose to his feet.  “All right, Mrs. Maxwell, that’s enough for today.  Our investigation is ongoing, and we will keep you informed.”

He reached into his pocket and handed Kim his card.  “Meanwhile, if you remember anything or hear anything, please call me day or night.”

Kim stared at the card, lost in a fog of disbelief and confusion.

She looked up at him.  “Have you spoken to anyone else?  Have you spoken to Ben’s nurse, Lois Carson?”

Detective Saunders stood a little taller.  “We’ll be in touch, Mrs. Maxwell.  Thank you for your time.”

Kim promptly returned to Ben’s room, her face the color of white powder.  Inside, she slowly wandered over to Ben’s bed, staring at him.  She sat down beside him and stared into his broad, sleepy face.  She heard the beep of the monitor.  She heard the chop of a helicopter drift over the building and then fade into the distance.  Her eyes lifted to see a blank TV monitor perched high and angled down, and she saw her own reflection.  She looked scared.

A sudden sense of danger struck her in the gut.  As she continued staring at Ben’s face, he made a sound, without opening his eyes, some dream fleeing by.

“Ben,” she whispered.  “What is going on?  What the hell is going on?”
