Thanks to Caitlin Mulrooney-Lyski of Berkley/Penguin Group USA, I am giving away one copy of On the Outside Looking Indian.
Rupinder was raised, like many children of immigrants, under the strict rules of her parent’s traditional Indian upbringing. While her friends were practicing their plies at ballet class, having slumber parties, and spending their summers at camp, Rupinder was cleaning, babysitting her siblings and watching hours on end of American television. Kept at home—safe from the corrupting influences of the outside world—Rupinder ate junk food and found solace in the familiar characters of Days of Our Lives, Who’s the Boss, and Welcome Back, Kotter.
What began as a desire to experience all that she missed out on as a child, quickly turns into much more as Rupinder discovers what it means to be happy, finds the courage to pursue her dreams, and realizes that the most important lessons are learned when we are at play.
Rupinder Gill has been published in the National Post and on McSweeney’s.com. She recently finished writing for Canada ’s This Hour Has 22 Minutes. On The Outside Looking Indian is her first book. To learn more, please visit rupindergill.net or follow her on Twitter @rkgill.
