Book Description:
Against the evocative backdrop of the majestically beautiful Hawthorne Manor, a sprawling plantation in Post-Civil War Tennessee, unfolds a story of love, hate, loss and redemption.
Every time Jerry reflected upon his childhood at the majestic Hawthorne Manor, he was overwhelmed with a mixture of antipathy and nostalgia. He could still see his beloved Beulah, his Nana and wet nurse, and Daniel, her son and his closest playmate, being led away in the inhumane shackles, while his mother counted her profits. He could remember his mother’s callous indifference, as he desperately begged her to save the two people he loved most. But the tragic and untimely death of his father had forever disrupted the tranquil existence of Hawthorne Manor and the happy life he once knew quickly became another poignant memory from his childhood in antebellum Tennessee. Determined to rescue Daniel and Beulah from the atrocities of slavery, Jerry runs away to New York at the tender age of twelve, to seek assistance from his uncles. The only problem is that his mother—whom he has vowed never to speak to again—has the addresses. So instead of finding his uncles when he arrives in New York, Jerry is quickly recruited by a nine year old street urchin, who takes him into the underbelly of New York’s Tenderloin.
Years later, to the ringing bells of freedom, Daniel also leaves the plantations of his past for opportunities in New York and as fate would have it, into the welcoming arms of his former friend. From the moment Jerry and Daniel are reunited, it is obvious their brotherly bond is still intact. Reflecting upon their childhood camaraderie, Jerry knew that he had loved Daniel even then, but as a child loves a brother. However, Jerry soon realizes that his present feelings for his old playmate exceed those of brotherly love. And there was one very important thing Jerry had not shared with his soul mate, and that was the secret world of homosexuality to which he now belonged. As the two friends reaffirm their childhood bond, Jerry is torn between overwhelming feelings of attraction and uncertainty. Will Daniel be accepting of his new sexuality? And more importantly, could he ever return his amorous affections?
Winfred Cook explores bold, controversial, and personal themes in his enthralling novel Wayfarers, revealing the power of friendship and loyalty against the unavoidable and often violent ravages of time. Elegant and engaging in style, Cook’s writing evokes the essence of social disorder that permeated rural and cultural life in post-bellum America. A glorious blend of rich historical drama and profound human relationships, Wayfarers is an assured new edition to the historical fiction genre.
