The Awakening

Description Awakening by Dana Claire

The government called her a weapon. Her mother called her a gift. She called it a forced fate. Beatrice Walker is no stranger to surprises and after the year she’s had, finding out she is responsible for billions of lives is a drop in the bucket. Until she learns there may be more to the prophetic plan to prevent the extinction of two planets—both Earth and Ferro, and that she isn’t the only Blood-Light they will need to fight the imminent threat of an asteroid hurtling toward the planets.

He grew up a loyal heir. He trained to be a soldier. He found purpose with the Rebellion. Cash Kingston didn’t think falling for a Blood-Light—part human, part Ferroean—was possible. But when he met Beatrice Walker, all of that changed. What didn’t waver was his quest to save his beloved planet Ferro and his new home, Earth. Not only from the oncoming asteroid but from leaders of both planets with more sinister agendas.

Together, Beatrice and Cash, plus their team, must uncover who they can trust, how they can stop their enemies, and what superpower matters most, or they will lose everything they are fighting for.

Having thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this series, I was absolutely sure I was going to love this one as well and boy, I wasn’t wrong. This is the second book in this stellar series and it’s even more action-packed than the first. It starts off with a bang and doesn’t let up the entire time. It also introduces more fun and quirky characters that I immediately fell in love with. And what an ending! It was done so uniquely and kept the momentum going until the very last page, during which we’re also treated to some astounding revelations that just make me that much more anxious for the next book to get here already. If you like young adult scifi action adventure, you’ll love this author and this series. They’re both outstanding.” -5 Stars DTChantel

“I’m so in love with this series!! This is the second book, which you expect for it to be not quite as good as the first, NOPE!!! This was just as great as the first, if not a little better!!!
The growth we see of the characters and not just the main characters, is so well done. We have a few new side characters that brought a lot to the story. But my favorite are Cash, Beatrice and Ashton. But I totally ship Cash & Beatrice!!!
I can’t stress this enough… if you like Romance with SciFi (like The Lux series by JLA, The Kricket series, The Saven series) you will LOVE this series!!!! It’s definitely it’s own series, not a copycat, but just to give you an idea of the kind of Romance with SciFi story it is. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SERIES!!! And I can’t wait for the next book!!!” -5 Stars Donna (Book Dragon Girl)

“I was so excited to read book two in this series! There was just enough backstory sprinkled in so that you could still follow the story if you hadn’t read book one (and enough to remind the reader if they read book one a while ago). I was pulled right back into Bea and Cash’s story, and I could barely put the book down until I reached the end. From rescuing Ashton, to Cash being captured, to Bea’s first experience of Ferro, to the surprising “reward” for saving the world, I had to keep turning the pages. We’re left with a cliffhanger at the end, though, so I hope Ms. Claire is industriously writing volume three!” -5 Stars Cyndi

“This book is beyond amazing. It keeps you so hooked at all times. You cannot go wrong with this read.” -5 Stars Amazon Customer

Excerpt Awakening by Dana Claire

The bones in my ribcage splintered as the bullet rocketed through my upper body. The pain erupted like a fire in my core, and then everything went numb as my knees gave out. I slumped to the floor, a gargled scream escaping my throat. The ringing in my ears muffled the thunderous roars of Cash spewing threats at my unexpected would-be assassin. I tasted copper as my mouth filled with warm blood.

I felt pressure against my chest, and was vaguely aware of Cash kneeling beside me, desperately trying to stop the flood of red blood and yellow ichor. The viscous liquids mixed and pooled in between his fingers and ran down onto the pristine tiled floor. I coughed weakly as I tried to swallow away the metallic tang that coated my throat, and I heard myself whimper, but the pain felt far away. I must be in shock.

“I swear to the Council, I’m going to kill you, Ashton.” Cash’s voice lowered to a derisive growl as he glared at the stranger. To me, Cash’s voice rang gently in my head, You’ll be ok, I’ve got you. One hand stayed pressed into my chest as the other reached back to pull his thermo dagger from his ankle sheath. I could already feel an increase in heat from the slight pressure of his fingertips as they glowed with his kind’s healing white light. He released the pressure from the gaping wound for only a split second, but with it a new wave of agony shook me to the core. Ripped from my numb haven of shock, I cried out as the blood flooded faster and faster through my human veins, adrenalin spiking like fireworks. Through the spots dotting my vision, I saw Cash slice his wrist with the blade of the Ferroean dagger. The room was doused with bright white light while yellow ichor dripped from his arm. He held his wrist to my mouth.

“Feed.” His command echoed both in my ears and my mind.

Without hesitation, I pressed my lips to his wrist and drank in the vital energy of his opposing source. It was the first time I had ever fed, but I’d heard of the technique used between Ferroeans when one was severely injured. Cash had told me that the method wasn’t used often because of its crippling effect on the donor. For most injuries, Ferroeans could simply use their healing touch to restore the wound.

The sticky substance dripped down the back of my throat and warmed my cooling insides. Heat radiated off Cash’s skin, warming my face as I pulled against his pulse with my lips. Although tasteless, it reminded me of thick syrup. The source that flowed through Cash’s veins in place of blood stuck to my tongue and the top of my mouth. I swallowed feverishly to get as much healing power as I could. My body craved the strength; a strange yet addicting feeling washed over me, reminding me of all the campy vampire shows Darla and I used to binge-watch on my days off from track practice. The thought of my best friend and my favorite sport pulled at my heart. Cash retracted his arm, snapping my focus back to the present and leaving me with a sense of loss. He dabbed at the cut with the end of his shirt, cleaning up the residue left from my lips.

My clothing still felt warm and wet as it clung to me, but the fountains of blood and ichor from my chest were stanched. My vision cleared along with the pain, but my head swam with a jumble of confusing thoughts. Why the hell did this stranger shoot me? Nothing about him appeared to be dangerous, and yet the second he scanned my body, I knew something was terribly wrong.

About Dana ClaireDana Claire

When author Dana Claire had several poems published as an elementary school student, she was hooked and writing became her passion. A shared dream of hers and her mother’s, she promised her dying mother that she would become a published author and that dream has been realized with The Connection.

Dana believes that a good story is made through strong character development; when readers become attached to the characters’ emotional state and are invested in their objectives. She believes that the beauty of reading is that one can live a hundred lives within the stories of books. Her own stories come to her in her dreams, and she wakes up with book ideas.

Dana’s family is very supportive of her writing and the creativity and sentiment driving it. Enjoying bicoastal living between Los Angeles and New York, Dana says she “lives the best romance in the world being married to the most amazing man she could ever ask for.” The Connection was her debut YA novel, the first volume in a planned trilogy. The Awakening is the second volume.  She is also the author of The Reclaimed Kingdom, a YA fantasy romance novel.

Description Connection by Dana Claire

Beatrice Walker thought she lived in a normal world—that is until she learned she’s a living hostel for an alien energy source, and apparently the answer to preventing extinction.

Bea has no memory of her last moments with her mother. The week they’d gone missing is a complete mystery. Suddenly moved back to her hometown with her father, Bea has rekindled her friendship with her two best friends—and seems to have caught the attention of an arrogant, yet gorgeous boy named Cash Kingston. But there’s more to Cash than his annoying attitude and good looks. Cash isn’t human, and he’s now in charge of protecting Bea from those who know what she keeps safe inside her: the energy source that once belonged to his murdered girlfriend.

Tensions mount as Bea learns her energy source must be paired with the one Cash holds to protect both their planets from an imminent threat. But what Bea doesn’t realize is there’s more to her than being human a host, that her feelings for Cash are not just a prophetic plan that will save their planets, and that the fate of everything lies in her choices.

Review Connection by Dana Claire

Guest Review by Mark S.

The course of true love never did run smooth, did it? Especially not when you throw in teenage hormones, heartbreak and oh, yeah, alien biology into the mix. ‘The Connection: Two Worlds, One Connection’ by Dana Claire is just the type of YA that makes reading fun and exciting again.

The main character, Beatrice Walker starts out the book with a fairly normal life, despite the fact that her mother was recently killed in a suspicious accident. Now, Beatrice lives with her father and attends the local high school where she gets a very unwelcome surprise in the form of a group of new students moving to town.

The group, headed up by a boy named Cash, are all devastatingly gorgeous but also strange and standoffish. Beatrice isn’t sure what to think of them at first, and she is very unsure what to think when she arrives home to find Cash speaking to her father at her house.

Suddenly, Beatrice finds herself embroiled in an intergalactic battle that she didn’t even realize existed as well as connected to Cash in a way that she couldn’t have dreamed. Still unsure whether or not she even likes Cash, Beatrice finds that she must cooperate with him to save her own life and the lives of beings on a planet that she has never seen.

This was a thrilling read and one that I couldn’t put down from start to finish! Dana Claire has told a fresh, exciting story here that still has all of the classical elements of traditional storytelling and plotting. ‘The Connection’ checked every box for me, story wise and I loved the romance between the two main characters.

I absolutely can’t wait to read the second installment in the series and find out what happens to these characters next! I give it 5 stars.

I received the ebook for my honest opinion.

Author, Dana Claire, believes that a good story is made through strong character development. When readers become attached to the characters’ emotional state and are invested in their objectives, the readers are there for the long haul backing the characters and their emotions. How cool is it to read a book and think about the characters long after you’ve read the last page? She believes that the beauty of reading is that one can live a hundred lives within the stories of books.

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to be a vampire, slay a dragon, or use a time machine, there’s a book for that.

High-Rise Diver by Julia von LucadouHigh-Rise Diver by Julia von Lucadou

Thanks to World Editions, I am giving away one print copy of ‘High-Rise Diver by Julia von Lucadou.

Description High-Rise Diver by Julia von Lucadou

Riva is a “high-rise diver,” a top athlete with millions of fans, and a perfectly functioning human on all levels. Suddenly she rebels, breaking her contract and refusing to train. Cameras are everywhere in her world, but she doesn’t know her every move is being watched by Hitomi, the psychologist tasked with reining Riva back in. Unquestionably loyal to the system, Hitomi’s own life is at stake: should she fail to deliver, she will be banned to the “peripheries,” the filthy outskirts of society.

For readers of The Handmaid’s Tale, The Circle, and Brave New World, this chilling dystopia constructs a world uncomfortably close to our own, in which performance is everything.

Praise High-Rise Diver by Julia von Lucadou

“A searing work of speculative fiction.” ―Kirkus Reviews

The High-Rise Diver is chillingly beautiful dissection of perfected capitalism. Lucadou creates a horribly convincing world where every aspect of existence has been monetised. In a taut, delicate narrative an implacable and disinterested cruelty faces the human ache for tenderness, mercy, contact and affection.” ―A.L. Kennedy

“Straightforward and cool, the author’s short, unadorned sentences reveal how the promise of salvation through greater efficiency, growth, and individual luck actually represses, stifles, and destroys the very essence of life: spontaneity, pain, dirt, emotion, poetry.” ―Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung
