On The Rails

Description On the Rails by Rosemary and Larry Mild

What’s a woman to do? Bertie Patchet has just graduated from college in New Haven, Connecticut, to become a grammar school teacher. But the year is 1936, and the country is deep in the throes of The Great Depression. Securing employment is nearly impossible for everyone, let alone a single inexperienced female. Going home is an ugly option to be avoided. Bertie absolutely must get away, but travel without an income? Forget it!

Bertie dresses like a man and turns to hopping railway boxcars to make her escape to better opportunities. A female hobo? Unheard of! It’s a man’s world, so how can she maneuver in this male atmosphere fraught with risk, danger, and loss? Will she ever find a teaching job? And will she dare to find romance in the bargain?

A charming new novel with an unforgettable protagonist, a setting to die for, and a mesmerizing plotline, On the Rails is on track to become another beloved tale by dynamic husband-and-wife duo Rosemary and Larry Mild.

Review On the Rails by Rosemary and Larry Mild

Bertie Patchet has graduated college with her teaching certificate.  It is 1936 so, not only will she not know if she will have a teaching job until right before the school season starts, in a few months but it is during the Great Depression.

She decides to go back home to her mother and step father, even though things have been bad in the past.  Her mother is an acholic and her step father has abused Bertie at night.  Perhaps things will be better.

Her first night back home and her step father enters her room.  At least, this time she is prepared to strike back and prevents him from getting his way.  However, now she knows, she can’t stay there.  She had heard stories of men riding the rails to look for work.  So, she decides to give it a try.  However, she must first disguise herself as a boy.

Bertie has many adventures and meets some very interesting and sometimes, quirky and even dangerous characters. She is certainly a woman ahead of her time and she learns to protect and take care of herself.

I could tell while reading that the authors put in a lot of time into researching the period.  They really bring the Great Depression to life.  Bertie is a strong female character.  I loved her spunk, wit, and determination! The other characters were well thought out as well.  Larry and Rosemary are excellent writers and breath life into this historical fiction!  I felt like I was there, with Bertie.  This would be excellent source material for a feature length film,  I really think someone should buy the rights!!  It could even follow Bertie on her adventures as a mini series.

This is my favorite book of 2023!  I cannot recommend it enough!  I give it all 5 stars.

I received the eBook version for my opinion.

Hawkesmoor

Description Hawkesmoor: Novel of Vampire & Faerie by Anne Merino

Vampires, Romance and dark Celtic Mysticism fuse and blaze in this epic tale set in Manhattan, Yorkshire, England — and time itself.

Robin Dashwood, a handsome and charming British vampire with long gone aristocratic connections, is about to be thrown into an epic adventure that will shine light upon the rise of the vampire. This is the last thing he could imagine himself doing. Robin prefers to hide in plain sight, having devised a quiet life for himself in New York as a history professor in hopes of avoiding other more powerful vampires and their dangerous, decadent political machinations.

A chance encounter in a Manhattan art gallery introduces him to the beautiful Lady Caroline DeBarry and reveals a vicious murder from Robin’s human past. In search of answers to this historical mystery, he returns home to England and to Caroline who has captured his heart. As Robin uncovers the truth, he finds traces of a far more ancient and shrouded realm than even that of the vampire. This will shake the foundations of vampire lore and its brutal hierarchy, placing Lady Caroline in terrible danger and setting in motion events that will lead to a final bloody confrontation between a revenant army and humankind.

Hawkesmoor is the first book in a trilogy that will continue the eerie adventures of Robin Dashwood — a very British vampire.

Guest Review  Hawkesmoor: Novel of Vampire & Faerie by Anne Merino

Review by Sol A.

An entertaining read that draws a lot of inspiration from vampire stories of the same genre, ‘Hawkesmoor: A Novel of Vampire and Faerie’ is really everything that you could want in a vampire novel. Brooding handsome guy? Check. Romantic English country manor house? Check. Slightly naive but beautiful love interest? Check. As a long time lover of paranormal and vampire stories, this is like my catnip and Anne Merino executes it well as far as plotting.

The basic premise is this: Robin Dashwood is a former Earl (of the fancy, English variety) who disappears under mysterious circumstances one night in the 1700’s. No one in his family (including his former fiancée, Elizabeth) realizes that he was turned into a vampire. In present day, Robin lives a seemingly normal life in New York City working as a college professor. Normal, of course, except for the fact that he occasionally needs to drink blood to survive. But it is during the course of his normal routine that he gets invited to a showing at the Glockner Gallery of the assets of Hawkesmoor, his former estate and discovers that his ex-fiancée died suspiciously shortly after marrying his cousin 300 years earlier. Now Robin must unravel the truth behind Elizabeth’s murder and deal with his feelings of guilt for abandoning his family and his estate for all those years. Meanwhile, the new heiress to the estate, Lady Caroline DeBarry has her sights on figuring out the mystery behind Robin, himself all while trying to keep her romantic feelings for him at bay.

Like I said, this was a really entertaining read. Was it perfect? No but very entertaining nonetheless.  You will need to enjoy vampire stories to enjoy this but I would probably say that of any paranormal book. I certainly enjoyed it and I would love to read more from this author in future! 4 stars.

Sol A. received the ebook for his honest opinion.

Eden by Jamie Lisa Forbes

Description Eden by Jamie Lisa Forbes

Rowen Hart has been raised as the pampered son and only child of a prominent family in the small community of White Rock, North Carolina. It’s the 1950s and he’s drifting through the days, following the life path his parents have planned for him and preparing to go away to college. When his father’s suicide turns his world upside down, he finds himself responsible for his mother in their suddenly reduced circumstances that leave them dependent on his uncle, his father’s business partner.

Ill prepared to take over as head of the family, Rowen doesn’t know which way to turn. Then a neighbor’s ten year old daughter comes to live with them, baffling him with her wild behavior and never ending attempts to win his approval and making his new responsibilities even more overwhelming.

As Rowen tries to find his way, he begins to question everything about his upbringing, his current circumstances and his plans for the future as they turn to dust in his hands.

My Thoughts Eden by Jamie Lisa Forbes

It is 1950, as Rowen Hart is about to go off to college, his world splits apart when his father commits suicide. His mother takes to her bed and the only one left to help pick up the pieces is their housekeeper Adeline.  Rowen has a summer job picking tobacco but he slacks off quite a bit.  As the book opens, he has slacked off to attend a trail that 10 year old Eden is called to testify at.  Her father died around the same time and Rowan’s father. She testifies that her uncle shot her father but no one believes the 10 year old, including her own mother.  Eden shows up on the doorstep of Rowans and asks his mother if she can live with them.

She looks up to Rowen and takes to following him around.  He goes to his Uncle, who was in business with his father to get his father’s share.  His uncle said there was nothing left from his father’s share and gives him a little money for his mother.  He says he will give his mother a small sum every month but Rowen will have to pay for college and also make up the balance his family will need to survive. He suspects his uncle is lying about his father’s share but just doesn’t have the backbone to argue.  Against his mother’s and Adeline’s wishes, he decides not to go to college.

Rowan’s luck turns when their neighbor Claude stops by to repair the broken gate that Rowen keeps putting off fixing.  Actually, he doesn’t really know how and doesn’t have the proper tools.  Rowen comes out of the house to ask Claude why he is fixing their fence and then proceed to help as Claude directs them.  Claude sees something in Rowen and invites him to work for him on his construction crew until the end of summer when he will leave for college.  Of course he doesn’t go to college.

As the months and years go by, Rowen starts to mature.  He marries and has 3 children and keeps bring money home.  However, he still has a long way to go.  There are many times I wanted to slap some sense into him.  I wanted someone to slap some sense into him!

The characters leaped of the page and welcomed me into their dysfunctional lives. I couldn’t help joining them; I was caught like a deer in headlights.  I especially loved Eden, so precocious and full of life despite her lot in life.  I would love to tell you more but don’t want to risk spoilers.

I really had a hard time putting this book down and be warned, there were parts that made me cry like a baby.  Jamie Lisa Forbes owes me a box of tissue!  She really captured the 1950’s south, warts and all.  Her take on the human condition reminds of the greats like John Steinbeck and Harper Lee!  This is her third book and I also read and loved the first two.  The first two won awards and I believe ‘Eden’ is just as deserving! She really captures the heart and soul of her characters.  I imagine they haunt her as they will haunt me for a long time to come.  I just can’t get them out of my head.  I highly recommend ‘Eden’ and give it 5 stars!
