A September to Remember

Description September To Remember by Carole Bumpus

This culinary travel memoir is an invitation to join in on a month-long trek through Italy, all in the search of the true Italian experience. Sprinkled with unforgettable characters, you will sup on sumptuous traditional foods, sip regional wines, and enjoy vast panoramas of extraordinary beauty. You may find yourself dancing at harvest festivals, climbing through Etruscan tombs, traipsing among Roman ruins, or bathing in ancient Roman termes (hot springs).

You may also enjoy climbing to the heights of wonder in Capri or to the top of St. Peter’s Basilica. Or delight in soaking up the ancient and cultural history in Milan, Firenze (Florence), Amalfi, Pompeii, Lecce and Rome. You can bask in the sun and rugged beauty of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Adriatic Sea, or the gorgeous Amalfi Coast. Or you can chat for hours over family meals while collecting a compendium of regional and traditional recipes (cucina povera), while you capture a rare glimpse inside the secrets to the Mediterranean psyche. It is truly a trip of a lifetime.

My Thoughts September To Remember by Carole Bumpus

“While traveling abroad, have you ever strolled down a cobblestone street, passed an open window, and heard laughter flowing out to greet you? Have you ever stopped to listen to the banter while wondering what it would be like to live there? In that house? That village? And, oooooh! What are those wonderful aromas? Well, you were not alone. I have too.”

I swear, this book should be officially endorsed by the Italian tourism board. I have never wanted to take a vacation to this beautiful country so much as I have after reading this memoir! Where else are you going to get locally grown olive oil, colorful festivals and historical buildings and sites that date back thousands of years?

I’m assuming that Carole Bumpus asked herself the same questions and it was this interest in Italy that led her and her husband, Winston to take a trip there in 1998. That very trip is immortalized in this memoir, ‘A September to Remember: Searching for Culinary Pleasures at the Italian Table.’

This is a true tale with historical settings, wonderfully friendly people and food that is absolutely to die for, if it were veganized, of course).

If there is anything that the Italian people do better than everyone else, it’s probably food and Bumpus proves this by not only describing delectable meals, but also including many of the recipes for these meals in the end of the book. Luckily, some of these recipes can be easily be made vegan but be ware, some cannot. This way, you can sample some of them for yourself and decide if they are everything that she describes. If you’re like me, you won’t be disappointed.

This memoir has much to love and salivate over, without dragging on like some others do. I loved Bumpus’ writing style and I plan to read more from her in the future! I actually read her novel, ‘A Cup of Redemption’ back in 2014 and loved it as well.  You can read my review here.

Nothing says love quite like food, and Carole Bumpus has hit on that perfectly in this one-of-a-kind memoir. I highly recommend that you read it.  Great arm chair traveling, especially during a pandemic. 5/5!

Note: For my fellow vegans, I found several vegan friendly restaurants in Italy via a Google search and there is also a vegan tour company to help you plan your trip there. Check out this article: How To Travel As A Vegan In Italy

I received the ebook for my honest review.

Literary Places (Inspired Travelers Guide ) by Sarah Baxter & illustrator, Amy GrimesLiterary Places (Inspired Traveller’s Guide) by Sarah Baxter

Thanks to Lydia Rasmussen of The Quarto Group, I am giving away two print copies of ‘Literary Places (Inspired Traveller’s Guide)’ by Sarah Baxter.

Description Literary Places (Inspired Traveller’s Guide) by Sarah Baxter

Bringing together engaging text and stunning hand-drawn illustrations, Inspired Traveller’s Guide: Literary Places takes readers on an enlightening journey through the key locations of literature’s best and brightest authors, movements and moments. Explore the plains of La Mancha with Don Quixote, take a Holden Caulfield tour of Central Park, or roam the Yorkshire moors with Cathy and Heathcliff.

Author Sarah Baxter explores literary locations from around the globe, including vibrant urban centres, tranquil creative sanctuaries and places that inspired classic stories. The evocative text outlines each location’s history and culture, combined with biographies of the authors or stories from the literary works that make the place significant.

My Thoughts Literary Places (Inspired Traveller’s Guide) by Sarah Baxter

‘Literary Places’ is a richly illustrated guide for literary travel.  That is, travel for book lovers.  It only provides short descriptions/short stories about the places you can visit.  So I think it is a good introduction to literary travel but I would certainly want to read a more in depth travel book or articles to plan an actual trip.

I think ‘Literary Places’ would make a great gift for literature lovers, as well as art lovers and would also make a handsome coffee table book.

Close Encounters of the Traveling Kind

Description Close Encounters of the Traveling Kind by Amanda Jayne

This collection of near-death (and a few almost-near-death) stories take you on adventures in Africa, South America, Nepal, Japan and Thailand. Close Encounters with an angry snake, the edge of an abyss, an unfriendly African tribe, a fake guide or two, a mean Dutch man, a magic whirlpool, a nasty case of Typhoid and a severe case of mountain stupidity are told with the confidence of a traveler who has discovered that no matter what happens, everything works out in the end.

My Thoughts Close Encounters of the Traveling Kind by Amanda Jayne

When I was a girl I loved to do adventurous things like sliding down snow filled hills and tubing down a river.  As an adult I have done some mountain climbing and parasailing but I have never done anything as adventurous as Amanda Jayne has done!

In ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’ Amanda Jayne has written a series of essays telling of her death defying travel adventures.  Her writing is such that she draws you in and makes you feel like you were on these adventures with her.  My entire body was clenched so tight while reading that I was quite sore.

I love how Jayne outlines the “reasons for near-death” at the beginning of each essay, “retrospective tips on how not to die”, and “lessons learned” at the end of each essay.  The first essay was from when she was an English teacher in Japan.  One drunken night her and her fellow teachers came up with the bright idea to climb Mount Fuji together.  However, when the time came, only Amanda and one other teacher showed up.  It quickly became apparent that they were ill equipped and had little idea of how to climb safely.

Jayne really shows her writing skills in this little book of essays and I hope she keeps writing!  She has a wicked sense of humor and can really capture the beauty and danger of nature as well as those real life characters that can help you risk life and limb.  I plan to keep my adventures small but I would love to read about more travel adventures that Amanda Jayne experiences.  I would also love to see her try her hand as a fiction writer, I really think she has the skill.  I highly recommend ‘Close Encounters of the Traveling Kind’!

About Amanda JayneClose Encounters of the Traveling Kind by Amanda Jayne

Amanda Jayne never wanted to live a normal life, which she has achieved with resounding success so far. She realised books were magic and could take you to other places, times and universes when she was very young and wanted to become an author immediately. However, she waited several decades so she could do other things first.

Her love for travel began with a six month South Africa trip at age 18 and continued with short jaunts in Eastern Europe during the years she worked in the mental health field.

As soon as she realised offices, rules and regulations were not her thing, she left her job and her native England to find out more about the world and the amazing array of people living in it. She spent 10 years living and travelling in various countries and finally returned to the UK in 2009 after gaining a masters in Spiritual Psychology in the USA and walking 1,200 km around the 88 temples pilgrimage in Shikoku, Japan.

These days she teaches Jikiden Reiki, makes websites and writes books. She’s sometimes quite busy. Some of the things she loves are trees, art, being with friends, making up stories for her nephews, karaoke, cats and dark chocolate, not necessarily in that order. She lives in a quiet corner of Kent in the UK and tries, but usually fails, to stay there for long periods of time.
